The Ripple Effect

Mental health problems affect people of all ages, cul-tures, education and income levels. They indirectly af-fect all Canadians through illness in a family member, friend, or colleague. It’s the ripple effect we talk about. It is likely that every one of us has associated with some-one who is suffering with mental health problems. The question is what actions did we take? Did we turn our backs and walk the other way? Did we decide it was none of our business? Did we decide it would be far easier if we didn’t get involved? Physical injuries are quite easy to see. We see people with crutches, or a bandage, or a cast and we have no problem checking in with them to see how they are do-ing. We MUST do the same if we know or suspect that someone is suffering from a mental health problem. The consequences of turning our backs could be devastat-ing. Peer support is very valuable in recovery.

Check in with people – Be a good listener – Do not judge – Reinforce that things will improve – Offer up help.
