The gripper is to be used only in its original state with its original accessories, without any unauthorized changes andwithinthescopeofitsdefinedparametersofuse.Zimmer GmbH shall accept no liability for any damage caused by improper use.

The LGS series gripper is designed exclusively for pneumatic operation.The gripper is intended for use in enclosed spaces for temporarily gripping and handling in boreholes.The gripper is not suitable for holding or clamping workpieces during a machining process.Direct contact with perishable goods/food is not permitted.

6. FunctionThe drive of the gripper is based on the principle of the expansion of the volume of a membrane when pressure is applied. This volume expansion acts on a three-piece collet chuck. The resulting increase in the diameter of the collet chuck rep-resents the gripping force. In order to prevent the membrane from being overstretched, e.g. when pressurized without a workpiece, the stroke is mechanically limited by a sleeve over the membrane. The return force of the collet chuck is effected by the elastic force of an O-ring. As a result, the gripper can be actuated with just a single pneumatic line. The pneumat-ic connection can be either axial or radial. The screw connection that is required is available as an accessory. The collet chuckscanbemachinedusingalatheinordertomakethemsuitableforcustomer-specificshapesanddimensions.Colletchuckswithanextendedlengtharealsoavailableforthispurpose("V"identifier).

7. Installation7.1 General installation information

WARNING:Risk of injury in case of unexpected movement of the machine or system into which the gripper is to be installed.

►Switch off the power supply to the machine before all work. ►Secure the machine against being switched on unintentionally. ►Check the machine for any residual energy.

NOTICE:Switch off the power supply before any assembly, installation or maintenance work.

Thegrippermustbeinstalledonamountingsurfaceinaccordancewiththespecificationsforflatness.Diameter < 100 mm permittedflatnessimperfection<0.02mmDiameter < 100 mm permittedflatnessimperfection<0.05mm• Observe the tightening torque of the mounting thread.

Ö Zimmer GmbH recommends verifying the permitted load-carrying capacity of the required screw connections in accor-dance with VDI 2230.

• Makesurethemountingsurfaceissufficientlyrigidandflat.• The exact mounting position can be found on the technical data sheet on our website.7.2 Installing the gripper

The gripper can be installed on the mounting piece using the mounting thread.The following work steps must be observed during installation:

►Mount the gripper to the mounting piece using the mounting thread 8.

7.3 Installing the power supply

Insert the screw connection blinto the designated connection.There are two connections available.

7.4 Adjusting the gripper fingers

INFORMATION:Thegripperfingersareprovidedasasingleunitwhenshippedfromthefactoryandareonlypre-slottedtomakemachining possible (lathing, milling, drilling etc.).For example, for a borehole with a dimension of 10 mm, the collet chuck is machined using a lathe to the nomi-nal dimension of Ø 10 mm and then slotted through completely.

The collet chuck is pre-slotted.After the collet chuck is machined, the slotsareseparatedwithafinesaw.

The collet chuck must be deburred well and polished at the edges and inner surfaces marked with arrows.The membrane rests on these edges and surfaces and can be damaged by burrs or other particles.This may substantially reduce the service life.

If the workpiece to be gripped has a collar or a groove in its inner contour, the collet chuck can be machined in suchawayastoenablepositive-fitgripping.

Ö Observe the maximum stroke!

After the collet chuck is machined and after the three clamping segments are slotted and deburred, the following installa-tion steps must be observed:

►Place the clamping segments bmbetween the spacer pins bnaround the base body bo.

►Slide the sleeve bqfor the stroke limitation onto the clamping segment from above.

► Insert the circlip bpabove the sleeve bqinto the annular groove.

► Insert the O-ring brfor the return of the clamping jaws into the annular groove bsof the clamping jaws.

9. MaintenanceMaintenance-free operation of the gripper is guaranteed for up to 2 million cycles.The maintenance interval may shorten under the following circum-stances:• Dirty environment• Improper use and use that does not comply with the power spec-

ifications• Anambienttemperatureof60°Cmustbeobserved;lubricants

harden faster!After approx. 2 million cycles, Zimmer GmbH recommends lubricat-ing the bearing of the jaw segments with MOLYKOTE BR2 PLUS bs.The inner surfaces of the gripping segments, which come into contact with the membrane, as well as the membrane itself, can be treated with a silicone grease (spray-on grease) bt.Even though the gripper is, as mentioned, maintenance-free, per-form a regular visual inspection to check for any corrosion, damage or contamination.Dismantling and reassembling the gripper without authorization may result in complications, as special installation equipment is required in some cases.Zimmer GmbH shall not be liable in the event of unauthorized dismantling and reassembling of the gripper or in the event of any malfunction or damage resulting from this.

10. Accessories/scope of deliveryINFORMATION:

If any accessories not marketed or authorized by Zimmer GmbH are used, the function of the gripper cannot be guaranteed.TheaccessoriesfromZimmerGmbHarespecificallyfittedfortheindividualgripper.Information on the corresponding optional accessories included in the delivery package can be found at www.zimmer-group.com.

11. Transportation/storage/preservation ►The transport and storage of the gripper must take place exclusively in the original packaging. ► If the gripper has already been installed on the superordinate machine unit, care must be taken during transport to en-sure that no unintentional movements can occur. Before commissioning the machine after transport, check all power and communication connections as well as all mechanical connections. ►Clean all components. There must be no soiling left on the components. ►Visually inspect all of the components. ►Remove all foreign substances. ►Properly remove potential corrosion spots.

12. Decommissioning and disposalINFORMATION:

When the gripper reaches the end of its operational phase, the gripper can be completely disassembled and disposed of. Disconnect the gripper from the power supply completely. The gripper can be disassembled and properly disposed of according to material groups. When disposing of it, observe the locally applicable environ-mental regulations and codes and regulations for disposal.
