ThankyouforchoosingtheMETTLERTOLEDOBluetoothOptionforyourXP/XSbalance.TheBluetoothOptionprovideswirelesscommunicationbetweenyourXP/XSbalanceandupto7Bluetoothcompatibleperipheraldevices.
Pleasereadtheinstallationandoperatinginstructionscarefully,inordertoinstallandconfiguretheBluetoothOptionsafelyandcorrectlyandtomakesurethatyoucantakeadvantageofalltheavailableoptions.
Pleaseobservethefollowing:
• Toimprovelegibility,theinstallationandoperatinginstructionsusetheabbreviation“BT”forcompoundwordswith“Bluetooth”(e.g.BTOption,BTdevice,etc.).
• BeforeinstallingandconfiguringtheBTOptioninyourXP/XSbalance,youshouldreadandunderstandtheinstallationandoperatinginstructions.

1.2 Bluetooth basics
Bluetoothisastandardizedtechnologyforthewirelesstransmission of data using radio systems in the frequency range of 2.4 GHz(2.402...2.480GHz).Thisfrequencyrangecanbeusedaroundtheworldwithoutalicense.Bluetoothdevicesuselow-powertransceiversforshort-rangetransmissionofdata.BTdevicesmaycommunicatewitheachotherwhentheyarewithintherangeoftransmission:

The BT Option is a Class 2 device with a range of 10 meters.Pleasenotethattherangeisatheoreticalvalue.Objectsbetweendevicesmayreducethetransmissionrange(especiallythickwalls,metalobjects,etc.).Furthermore,devicesneedtobeinthereceivingrange,i.e.youmayconnectaClass1device(range100meters)toaclass2device(range10meters)butthedistanceisthenlimitedtothereceivingrangeofthelowerpowereddevice(itthiscaseto10meters).
The2.4GHzbandisacommonlyusedtransmissionfrequency(e.g.forwirelessphones,babyphones,wirelessaudioandvideotransceivers,wirelessLANadapters,etc.).Topreventinterferencewithsuchdevices,Bluetoothdividesitsbandwidth(2.402...2.480GHz)into79channelsandcontinuouslyswitchesbetweenthem.Thisprocedureiscalled“frequency hopping”andtakesplaceupto1600timespersecond.
TheveryfirstofficialimplementationoftheBluetoothstandardwasversion1.0.Unfortunately,version1.0wasnotverystableandmanyearlyusershadalotoftroublewhensettingupBTconnections.Versions1.1and1.2remediedthemajorityoftheseproblemsandprovedtobestable.MostofthecurrentlyavailableBTdevicessupportBluetooth 1.2andsodoestheBTOption.Laterimplementationssuchasthe2.0orhigherstandardmainlyboostthetransmissionspeedwhichisnotanissueformanyusersastypicalBTapplicationsdonotneedtotransferhugeamountsofdata.

AllBTdeviceshaveauniqueidentificationcodethatcannotbechanged,namelytheBT device address.TheBTdeviceaddressisatwelve-digithexadecimalfigure,whichisrepresentedas“01:23:45:67:89:AB”.Sincethedeviceaddressisextremelyunmanageablefornormaluse,allBTdevicesalsohaveanamewhich,inmanycases,canbeeditedbytheuser.ThedeviceaddressandnameofaBTdevicecan(inadditiontootherdevicedata,suchassupportedprofiles,etc.)berequestedbyotherBTdevices.
1.3 Bluetooth security features
LikeallradiotransmissionsBluetoothwouldbeinherentlyinsecurewithoutprovidingadditionalsecurityfeatures.Infact,Bluetoothisconsideredtobeverysafeassumingappropriateconfigurationofitsbuilt-insecurityoptions.Theseinclude:
– Visibility option:ManyBTdevicesmaybemadeinvisibletootherBTdevices.Infact,aBTdeviceneedstobevisibleonlyupontheinitialsetup(theso-called“pairing”)whenitneedstobeseenbytheotherdevice.Oncepairinghastakenplace,therespectivedataisstoredlocallyinbothdevicesandfurthercommunicationcantakeplacewithoutrequiringvisibilityasbothdevicesalreadyknoweachotherandhaveestablishedatrustedrelationship.ItisstronglyrecommendedtomakeaBTdeviceinvisibleexceptwhenvisibilityisrequired,thushidingitsaddressfromotherunits.ThatiswhythedefaultsettingoftheBToptionis“Invisible”.
– PIN codeandAuthentication:Usually,BTdevicesrequiretoexchangeaPINcodebeforepairingcantakeplace.InmostcasesthePINcodesetatthefactorycanbechangedbytheuser.NotethatthePINcodeofbothunitsmustmatch,otherwisenocommunicationwillbepossible.AuthenticationistheprocessofexchangingPINcodes.Withauthenticationenabled(thisistheBTOption’sthefactorysetting),aBTdevicerequiresotherBTdevicestosendtheirPINcodebeforegrantingcommunication.
– Encryption: For secure transmission, thedataexchangedbetweenBTdevicesmaybeencrypted. Ifencryptionisactive,otherBTdevicesmaypossiblymonitorthedatabuttheycannotuseit.NotethatencryptionrequiresaPINcode(whichisusedforencryption).
1.4 Bluetooth services and profiles
EveryBTdevicehasaparticularscopeofuse(e.g.acellularphoneoraBTprinter).BTprofilesreflecttheusecasesofadevice(e.g.wirelesstelephonyorwirelessprinting).Forinstance,thereareprofilesforprintingorforfiletransferviaFTP.Uponpairing,aBTdevicecommunicatesitsprofilesandtheappropriateservices.Theexchangeofdataispossibleonlyifatleastonematchingprofile/serviceisavailableandactivatedonbothunits.TheBTOptionsupportsthe“Serial Port Profile”(SPP)offeringservicesforexchangingdataviaaserialRS232Cinterface(whichisthenredirectedtoBluetooth).TheactualnamingoftheSerialPortProfiledependsonthemanufacturerandthedevice,forMettler-Toledodevicesitiscalled“SPPdata”.PleasenotethatsomeBTdevicesrequireauthenticationviaaPINcodebeforecommunicatingtheservicesavailablefromthem.

1.5 Client vs. Server (communication roles)
ForcommunicationaBTdevicemayeitheractas“Client”(alsocalled“Master”)or“Server”(alsocalled“Slave”).InBTterminology,aclientistheactivepart,i.e.theonethatsearchesforotherdevices,determinestheservicestobeusedandactivelymanagesthecommunication.Theserverhasapassiverole,it justcommunicatesitspresenceanditsbuilt-inservices,i.e.theserverwaitsfortherequestsreceivedfromaclientandanswersthem.Assoonasaconnectionisactive,theservercannotansweranyotherconnectionrequests.For every connection the BT Option may be configured to be the client or the server.ThefollowingfigureshowsatypicalconfigurationwheretheBToptionistheclientofaprinterconnectionandtheserverofahostconnection:

1.6 Bluetooth networks

ItisagoodpracticetofollowthestepsoutlinedbelowwhensettingupaBTconnection(assumingtheperipheraldevicehasalreadybeensetupforBTcommunicationaccordingtothedocumentationsuppliedwiththerespectiveunit):
1. MakesuretheglobalsettingsfortheBToptionhavebeensetupcorrectly(seesection3).
2. In“System”–>“Peripherals”selectthetypeofdevicetowhichyouwanttoconnect(seesection4).

– “Searching”: BTOptionistryingtoestablishaconnectiontotheBTdevice (deviceandservicearedefinedcorrectly).
– “Offline”: Theconnectionhasbeenconfiguredincorrectly(nodeviceorservicedefined).
Note:

ThegeneralprocedureusedtoconfigureandactivateaconnectionbetweentheXP/XSbalanceusingBTOptionandaBTperipheraldeviceisdescribedbrieflybelow.Thesameprocedureappliestoalltypesofperipheraldevices(printer,auxiliarydisplay,etc.).

“Communication Role”ForcommunicationwithotherBTdevicesthebalancecaneitheractas“Client”or“Server”.InBTterminology,aclientistheactivepart,i.e.theonethatestablishesandcontrolscommunicationandsetsuptherespectiverules.Theserverhasapassiverole,itjustwaitsfortherequestsreceivedfromaclientandanswersthem(inthiscasethePINcodeenteredintheglobalsettingswillbeusedforauthentication,seesection3.2).
ForperipheralssuchastheBT-P42printerortheBT-BLDsecondarydisplayyouneedtoselect“Client”asinthiscasethebalancetakestheactiverole.IncaseofaHostconnection(toaPC)thebalancemayeitherbetheclientortheserver,dependingonyourparticularrequirements.Formoreinformationonclient/server,networkandhostconnectionissuespleaseconsultsection1.
If you define the balance to act as a server, the majority of settings become inaccessible because the respective settings are defined on the client side, i.e. by the other BT device.

“Service”ThissettingisusedtodeterminetheservicethatistobeusedforcommunicationwiththeexternalBTdevice.
Oncethesettinghasbeencalledup,theBTOptiondetermineswhich services are made available by the assigned BT device.Thismaytakesometime.Duringthesearchperiod,themessage“Pleasewait...searchingservices”appears.
A list is thendisplayedwhichdetails theservicessupportedbytheperipheralBTdevice.Fromthelist,selecttheservicethatistobeusedfortheserial transmission of data(madeavailablebythe“Serial Port Profile”whichistheonlyBTprofilesupportedbytheBTOption).Waituntiltheconfigurationmenureappears(maytakeseveralseconds).
Note:Thenameofthe“serialtransmissionofdata”serviceisnotthesameforallBTdevices(forinstance,itiscalled“SPPdata”fortheBT-P42PrinterandtheBT-BLDSecondaryDisplaybut“ZV-AT:”fortheBT-100BarcodeReader).Theexactnameoftheservicecanbefoundintheinstructionsfortherelevantdevice.Ifanincorrectserviceisselected,thenaconnectioncannotbeestablishedatalaterstagetotheperipheraldevice.

“PIN Code”Thissettingdeterminesthe“PINCode”tobeusedforcommunicationwiththeselectedperipheraldevice.YoumustenterthePINcodeusedbytheperipheraldevice.Thiscanbefoundinthedocumentationthatcamewiththedevice(orprobablyonastickeraffixedtothedeviceitselfortothepackaging).IfthePINcodesdonotmatch,communication will not be possible, assuming authentication(exchangeofPINcodes)isrequired(seenextmenuitem).
Note:Thefactorysettingofthismenuitem(“Mettler-Toledo”)re-flectsthePINcodeoftheMETTLERTOLEDOBT-P42PrinterandtheBT-BLDSecondaryDisplay.NotethattheGryphonBT-100BarcodeReaderusesadifferentPINCode(“1234”).

“Pairing Info”This menu item is available only if a PIN code and/or pairing information is available.
PairingistheinitialsetupofaconnectionbetweentwoBTdevices(includesselectingtheremotedeviceandchoosingtheappropriateservice).The informationgathereduponpairing ispermanentlystoredinthedevices.The“Manage”settingsimplymeansthatthebalanceautomaticallyexchangespairinginformation(e.g.PINcode)assoonastheperipheralBTdeviceandtheappropriateservicehavebeenselected.Insomeparticularcircumstances(e.g.communicationissues)itmightbenecessarytodeletethepairinginformationofaparticularconnectionusingthe“Delete”item.Thisremovestheexistingpairinginformationforthatparticularconnec-tion(pairingwillthentakeplaceagainuponthenextattempttoestablishtheconnection,i.e.afterhavingselectedtheperipheralandthesuitableservice).

4.2 Deactivating/activating an active BT connection
AnexistingBTconnectioncanbedeactivatedandthenreactivatedatanytime.ThismayberequiredifyouwishtochangetheglobalsettingsoftheBTOption(seesection3.2)becausemostofthemenuitemsareavailableonlyifthereisnoactiveconnection.Furthermore,connectionstoBTperipheralsthatdonotrespondshouldbedeactivatedtopreventtheBTOptionfrompermanentlysearchingforthem(whichconsumesBTbandwidth).Thesameappliestodevicesthatarenotbeingused,aseveryactiveconnection(eveniftheperipheraldeviceisnotused)consumesacertainamountofBTbandwidth.
