How is it manufactured?

Granite is a natural material that is formed over millions of years…

The basic func<on of the gang saw machine is to slice by rubbing using an aggregate, the granite blocks into scants (slabs) of uniform thickness.

The slabs are then highly polished on one side using a line polishing machine. Whilst it is possible to polish a slab by hand, the most consistent quality is obtained using a line polishing machine.

Granite is mined in large blocks, typically measuring 3m by 2m. These massive rough cut blocks oZen do not give any indica<on of the beau<ful granite colours externally before they are polished.

The worktops are cut from the raw sheet material using one of our stone saws or our Combi Cut (the only one in the UK)

How is it fabricated?

Planning and Design

Granite will be templated by Sheridan but there are a few points that need to be taken into considera<on when planning the kitchen.

  Begin planning with a pre‐site survey.

  Plan the worktop layout to ensure joints don’t fall on or within 50mm of cutouts and cutouts are at least 50mm from the worktop edge.

  Worktop overhang must not exceed 300mm.

  Wherever possible joints in worktops should fall on a carcass end panel not in the middle, this gives added support to a joint.

  Each worktop requires an expansion clearance (to the wall or tall housing) of 1mm for every linear metre of worksurface up to 3mm.

  Due to the weight of granite, units will need to be securely fixed, both to the wall and to each other, ver<cal and levelled before templa<ng and installa<on.

  The size of the scant is the major factor in determining the length of the worksurface possible in one piece.

  2.9m x 1.8m is a typical slab size

Edge Detail and Joints

  The edge detail can completely change the appearance of a worktop to suit the kitchen design.

  Edge detail may be slightly duller than the worksurface.

  Bevel edges are hand finished. In some instances the material may chip when cut which will result in a larger bevel being applied, which will be matched throughout the installa<on.

  Bullnose and Sharks Nose edge details will require a scribed (Masons Mitre) joint.

  Granite joints are finished with a small arris to the top edge to remove sharp edges. Silicone sealant is applied between the two pieces to prevent water ingression, it’s not used to fill the joint.

  There are two op<ons available, five grooved drainer and the recessed drainer

  Drainer grooves and recessed drainers will be slightly duller than the surrounding worksurface, as they are machined aZer the slab has been polished.

  Granite upstands are 20mm thick, unless ordered specifically.

  Wall cladding will be manufactured in 20mm thickness material.

  The standard joint for these materials will be a buh joint ending with a 5mm overhang. Also available as a flush buh joint. Unless requested otherwise we will supply a normal buh joint.

  All end panels will be manufactured to the correct specified height, with no scribing allowance as the material is not easily scribed to the floor.

Technical informa<on

  A solid 30mm granite surface

Thermal expansion   Granite can expand by up to 1mm per metre so

always allow an expansion gap.

Overhangs and support  Maximum unsupported overhang ‐ 300mm

 Maximum unsupported span between units ‐ 600mm.

Hob and sink cut outs   Splash backs and upstands over 100mm must have a

minimum gap from the face to the rear of the hob of: Electric 50mm, Gas 120mm

  Allow a minimum 50mm from the hob cut out to the front edge.

  Allow a minimum of 200mm between heated cut outs.

  Allow a minimum of 50mm from the sink cut out to the front edge.

  Allow a minimum of 70mm between sink cut outs.

  If a waste disposal system is fihed to an undermounted sink addi<onal support will be required. This must be addressed by the kitchen fiher/plumber NOT by Sheridan. Failure to add the addi<onal support will invalidate the warranty.

  Addi<onal support is required for ceramic sinks.

Product   Granite upstands are straight and rigid, gaps will be

visible where there are varia<ons in the wall profile behind them. Plastering or <ling should ideally be completed aZer the worksurface installa<on, gaps can then be minimised.

  Granite upstands should ideally be at least 100mm high as material less than this height can be fragile.

  Wall cladding will be manufactured in 20mm thickness material.

Staining   Granite worktops are sealed prior to despatch and

upon installa<on, then approximately every 6 months by the consumer (depending upon usage) using the care & maintenance kit.

  Apply a drop of water to the worktop to check if resealing is required – if the water forms pools, it requires resealing, if the water runs away the worktop is ok

  Although one of the least absorbent stones, Granite can be stained by grease, wine, coffee, nico<ne, fruit juices, even champagne, as a rule lighter colours are more porous than darker ones.

  Any spillage must be removed immediately from a granite worktop, delay could cause permanent damage.

Heat   Granite is heat resistant but not heat proof, therefore

the use of pan rests or trivets is a necessity to avoid the risk of permanent damage.

Handling   Limi<ng factors like access, stairs, service liZ size,

fragile nature of the tops should be taken into considera<on.

  For installa<ons you will need to supply addi<onal labour on orders which have worktops larger than 1.8m2 or weighing above 150kg. Every addi<onal 75kg requires an extra person to assist with liZing. Sheridan can supply addi<onal labour at extra cost.

Technical informa<on

Important

  The molecular structure renders granite very stable and rigid, it will not bend or flex.

  Will not bend or flex in worktop thicknesses, granite is not suitable in long span applica<ons.

  Pipng and veining will occur in random distribu<on of swirls, in addi<on, subtle varia<ons in shade or areas of contrast are all common within granite, resul<ng in its unique appearance.

  Bal<c Brown, Giallo Veneziano and certain other lighter colours, are resin treated at source to fill natural flaws and pot marks.

  Some level of what could be referred to as spots or blotches are inherent in the material. Small fissures are a common feature in any granite and these natural flaws were present at the rock forma<on.

  Granite is highly scratch resistant but not scratch proof. Small scratches of less than 25mm in length are ‘within tolerance’ and are considered acceptable. Breakages can and do occur in the manufacturing process, should this be the case, delays may occur.

  Granite some<mes is suscep<ble to 'blowing out'. This occurs when contact is made with the material whilst cupng or grinding.This is very common in large par<cled granite. We fill and seal the affected areas with epoxy resin (colour may vary) to ensure the material is not leZ with any sharp edges or ‘chips’.

The Care & Maintenance instruc<ons that are included in the kit should be read and followed to ensure the worktops con<nue to look as good as the day they were installed.

  For normal day to day cleaning, wipe the worksurface with

a damp cloth and the Stone Guard.

  Rinse with warm clean water.

  Dry with a lint free cloth.   Granite will be sealed during installa<on, but will then

require resealing at least every 6 months

  To test if a worktop requires resealing, apply a drop of water to the surface, if the water runs away, the seal is ok, if the water forms pools, it requires sealing.

  Granite is stain resistant, however spills should be wiped up straight away to help prevent the risk of permanent damage .
