ACCESS STAIRS For road, rail and utilities for access to maintenance works via an embankment. 1. Scope This document gives basic guidance on the installation of modular access stairs and handrails supplied by Stanton Bonna under normal conditions. When circumstances vary, for example varying landing stages, supplementary instructions may be required and should be provided by the overall scheme designer. The system complies with Highways Agency Regulations and can be adapted to DDA (Disability Discrimination Act) standard on request. 2. Site Preparation Ease of assembly means that, subject to clearance of an embankment’s vegetation, the stairway modules can be installed on rough terrain with the minimal amount of preparatory groundwork. The fixing pins are 400mm with approximately 200mm inserted into the ground so the risk to buried services is minimal. The use of CAT scan equipment prior to work commencing is seen as good practice and may be required, subject to the site location. 3. Delivery and Handling The system is delivered to site on pallets of no more than 1 tonne per pallet. Assembly can be managed by hand with the assistance of light duty lifting equipment, as necessary.

4. Stairway System Each 5 rise module comes with:

a) 1 x left String

b) 1 x right String

c) 5 x Risers

d) 2 x Fixing Pins

e) 2 x Tie Bars M8 with nuts M8 and washers M8

1 x Kicker Beam is supplied with each start of flight.

The access stairs unit can be supplied in widths of 1 metre, 1.5 metres and 2 metres. Details of a 1 metre wide system: Component Length (m) Weight (kg) String 1.65 62 x 2 Riser 1 20 x 5 Kicker Beam 1.3 33 Complete Unit 1.65 257

Riser Dimensions Slope g

(mm) h

(mm) 2/1 295 148 7/4 287 163 3/2 277 179

The stairway system is designed for both permanent and temporary installation and can be applied to embankment slopes with a gradient of between 25 and 45 degrees, ensuring compatibility with most roadside locations. Please note the angle of the risers will vary subject to the angle of the slope.

5. Stairway Installation Step 1: Prepare string line Step 2: Grade the formation. Lightly compact.

Remove soft spots, place lean mix concrete blinding, if necessary.

Step 3: Install Kicker Beam.

Step 4: Position Strings with Assembly Pins (2 per flight) using hammer. If concrete base used drilling will be needed.

Step 5: Install Risers. Check the level.

Step 6: Fit and tighten Tie Bars

Step 7: Repeat process for each subsequent module. Fill steps with either concrete or MOT type1. If handrail is required, fit this before filling the steps (see next section). CHECK LIST

> Alignment of stairs

> Level of Strings

> That Strings are plumb

> Assembly Pins are in place

> Tie Bars are correctly fitted and tightened

6. Handrail The Stanton Bonna Access Stairs can accommodate a variety of hand rail formats including galvanised steel and GRP, to industry specific requirements. We have adopted a tube clamp system that is quick and easy to install. The posts can be supplied pre-assembled which helps reduce installation time. The base-plate can accommodate 22 to 45o angles from horizontal and 42.4(C)mm or 48.3(D)mm tube type can be used. The top and middle handrails slide through all the connections on the posts to minimise cutting on site. Fittings are available to adapt to the site needs eg. Elbows and bends for landings and turns. 7. Handrail Installation 7:1 Base-Plate and Posts The Access Stair stringers have a number of preformed holes to accommodate the base-plate. Three on each stringer, left and right. Each base-plate is supplied with two bolts, two locking or security nuts, and four washers two small and two large. Position the first base-plate at the bottom set of stringer holes with the crescent shaped hole at the top. Place the large washer on to the bolt and place the bolt through the bottom hole (inside to outside). Pass through the bottom base-plate hole then place the smaller washer and nut on to the bolt, hand tighten. Repeat this with the top bolt. Once both bolts are in place lightly tighten and insert the post. Make sure the post is plumb and fully tighten the nuts, if using security nuts tighten until the head snaps off. (Photo shows how the base-plate fitting is bolted to the string and then the post inserted and secured).

Upright posts can be set at 825mm or 1650mm centres:

> If working to 1650mm centres then the bottom two holes on each stringer should be used. When at the top stringer then use the top set of holes as well.

> If working to 825mm centres then use top and bottom set of holes.

The system can terminate in a stair return or it can continue on to a landing that is straight, offset or turned. 7:2 Handrails Once all the posts are secure thread the handrail tube through the top set of tee’s. These may need loosening to get the correct alignment. Lock the handrail into position by using one or two of the grub screws in the tee’s. On longer runs of stair the tube may need to be jointed using internal joins supplied. Repeat this for the mid rail. 7:3 Handrail Return Place a return on either the top or the bottom of the stairway handrail ensuring that it is lined up with the end of the top and the mid rail. Repeat at the other end. Trim to size as needed ensuring that any exposed or sharp edges are smoothed off and safe. Once the configuration of handrails and return are correctly aligned tighten all the grub screws on all of the clamps and fittings.
