Tools needed 1 – Philips and flat bladed screwdriver
1 – 1/4 or 3/8ths drive ratchet
1 – 10mm socket either deep or shallow
1 – 3” to 6” extension to fit your ratchet and socket
1 – Various picks and awls
1 – Non marring panel popper
1. Start by emptying your cubby hole in the center console and removing the 2 screws holding the back
portion on.
3
2. Using a pocket screw driver or pick/awl pop off the covers to the screws on the front of the center
console.
3. If you have not already removed the console to replace the shift boots then you will need to do one of
the following:
1 **THIS ONE CAN DO VISUAL DAMAGE IF YOU ARE NOT CAREFUL THIS IS THE FACTORY
DIRECTIONS** Using a non-marring panel popper pry the front of the window switch
(closest to the shift boot) up and out, disconnect the switch and unscrew the mounting
screw beneath it. If you’re not careful you will damage the console.
2 **THIS STEP WILL BEAK 1 MOUNT OF THE CENTER CONSOLE THAT YOU CAN NOT SEE YOU
HAVE BEEN WARNED!! THIS IS NOT FACTORY DIRECTIONS** This method is if the window
switch wont pop off. Leaving the window switch attached and all 4 screws out, gently pull
out on the 2 sides of the front of the console once separated from the dash pull up hard on
the console. You will hear a pop. You just broke off one of the console mounts. It’s under
the window switch.
4. Once you have the last screw dealt with remove the shift knob by unscrewing it. It might be on really
tight!!
4
5. When you have that off lift the front of the console up and pull it towards the front of the car, I found
it easiest to have the cubby hole lid open to move the console around the trunk and gas lid opener. If
you broke off the 5th console mount lay the console on its side (passenger side) and disconnect the
window switch.
6. When you have the switch disconnected, place the console to the side. Next remove the
insulation/sound absorber from the shifter area. Next remove the 4 10mm head bolts from the large
shift boot. Using some sort of lubrication or soapy water, spray the top portion of the boot (where the
white ring is) to aid boot removal. Slide the white ring off then pull the large boot up and off the
shifter. (Now is a good time to replace that torn large shift boot, you get a new small boot with the
shifter)
5
7. Once you have the large boot removed you’ll see the 3 bolts for the shifter base. Remove the 3 bolts
from the shifter base/small boot. Once all 3 bolts are removed pull the shifter straight up and out of
the trans. (This is another good time to change the transmission oil, it’s easier to fill through the turret,
remove fill plug (to make sure that it comes off it’s a 24mm socket), remove drain plug 24mm socket,
drain fluid, put drain plug back in, fill trans with 2qts of desired fluid until it comes out of the fill plug
then put fill plug back on and you’re done!). Ok back to the shifter, place the old shifter aside (place it
in a plastic bag to keep things clean).
6
8. Using either a pick or pocket screwdriver hook and lift one side of the lower shifter bushing (only get
the bushing the spring will come next). Then take your flat bladed screwdriver wiggle it between the
bushing and the rear pin (on the side you lifted) and pull back on the screwdriver. It should bend the
bushing enough to get it past the pin. Once that is out use a pick or pocket screwdriver bend the wave
spring up and remove it. Clean the shifter turret with a clean rag.
7
8
9. Place the new wave washer into the shift turret. Be careful not to bend the new one. Then place the
Delrin riser bushing with the long slots down into the transmission. Then place the new gasket on top
of the turret (the riser bushing will hold it in place.
9
10. The next part is VERY IMPORTANT! Take the riser plate and with the pin side that has less distance from
the bottom needs to go towards the transmission and the greater distance needs to go facing up. See the
pic below.
10
11
11. Once the riser plate is in place coat everything inside of the transmission with heavy grease, like white
lithium grease. Use lots of it! Coat the shift selector bushing and using your finger stick the cupped end of
the bushing on the tip of your finger the grease will hold it in place. Then place the bushing into the shift
selector lever, push it all the way into place. Pull your finger out being careful to not pull the bushing
back up and out.
12
12. Next put grease on the shifter pivot ball and shifter selector ball and place it inside the transmission. If
you bought the one with the bend place the bend towards the steering wheel. If the small boot bolt holes
don’t line up spin it until it does. Insert the 3 long silver bolts into the holes and tighten to 95 in lbs.
Reinstall the large shift boot without the white tension ring.
13
14
13. Next reinstall the insulation/sound deadener around the shifter and reinstall the center console don’t
forget to reconnect the window switch!!! Start the console back side first, work the trunk and gas levers
through the hole and carefully line the shifter through the shift boot. Reinstall the 4 or 5 screws
(depending which method you used). And put the goodies back into your cubby hole. Reinstall your shift
knob and you are done!!! Go easy at first until your used to it.
