Section 3: Hoisting Considerations

Hoisting Recommendations

Reminder: Plan grip location by measuring distance (D) from ODC

compatible connector to tower support member.

(D)

(D)

Direct Breakout

Grip Location

• In general this cable will handle similarly to coaxial cable, and similar installation techniques apply. All cables are individually serialized, be sure to write down the cable serial number for future reference.

• Leave the protective packaging around the Fibre tails and power conductors during hoisting and securing the cable.

• Be sure that the Direct breakout is not damaged by attachment of a hoisting grip or during the hoisting process. Attach a hoisting grip on the jacketed cable no less than .3 m (1 ft) below the fibre breakout point. Prevent the fibre tails and power conductors from undue movement during hoisting by securing with tie ropes every 1 m (3 ft) to the hoisting line.

• During hoisting ensure that there is a free path and that the cable breakouts will not be snagged on tower members or other obstacles.

• Installation temperature range is -40°C to +80°C (40°F to +176°F).

• Minimum cable bend radii can be found on-line in our eCatalog section at www.commscope.com.

• Maximum cable tensile load can be found on-line in our eCatalog section at www.commscope.com.

• CommScope Lace-Up Hoisting Grip 19256B-C required for 808, 1208, and 1810 installations.

• CommScope Lace-Up Hoisting Grip 29958-C required for 810 and 1210 installations.

• CommScope Lace-Up Hoisting Grip 29961-C required for 1808 installations.

• Hoisting Grip should be anchored to the support structure after the hangers are installed.

• During final connections to RRU, do not bend the fibre ends tighter than 30 mm (1.2 in) bend radius or you take the risk of breaking the glass fibres.

Hybrid Fibre Cables weigh more than traditional coaxial cables. Be sure to follow proper hoisting and attachment procedures.!

Device designed for cleaning the ferrule end faces of Fibre connectors

Open guide cap, insert connector into guide, push the outer shell to start cleaning the connector interface, a "click" sound indicates end of a cleaning process, repeat, close cap immediately after use.

Caution: Be careful not to slant connector while inserting into the Guide cap. Do not overly exert force during insertion as this may cause damage to both the connector and the cleaner.

There are 3 basic principles that are critical to achieving an efficient Fibre optic connection:

1. Perfect Core Alignment

2. Physical Contact

3. Pristine Connector Interface

Today’s connector design and production techniques have eliminated most of the challenges to achieving core alignment and physical contact. What remains challenging is maintaining a pristine end-face. As a result, CONTAMINATION is the #1 reason for troubleshooting optical networks.

Implementing the process of cleaning and inspecting before mating can reduce the time spent troubleshooting, optimize signal performance and prevent damage.

Abrasive particles (i.e. rock dust) can cause permanent damage to the

• The terminated Fibre ends however are fragile and must be protection during installation. Leave the packaging around the Fibre ends in place until ready to make final connect of the jumper at the RRU or BBU.

• DO NOT BEND THE Fibre ENDS TIGHTER THAN 30 mm (1.2 in) BEND RADIUS ELSE THERE IS A RISK OF BREAKING THE GLASS FIBRES.

• Attach the main cable securely to the structure or equipment using hangers to prevent strain on connections from movement in wind or snow/ice conditions.

• Ensure the Fibre and power connections and seated firmly in the RRU.

• Installation temperature range is -40°C to +70°C (-40°F to +158°F).

Section 13: Jacketing Removal Procedure for Additional Grounding

1. Score the jacketing 360º

2. Measure 51 mm (2 in) and repeat

3. Identify where the aluminum shielding overlaps, this will feel like a flat spot in the cable

4. Remove a section of jacketing between score marks

5. Lift edge of jacketing

6. Grab lifted edge of jacketing with a pair of pliers and roll on the cable

7. Remove excess adhesive with a piece of emery cloth

* Grounding kit installation instructions included with the grounding kit.

Reel Packaging

Carefully remove shrink wrap

After shipment arrives take extra care when removing the over packing. Remove reel from box or cut strap holding the reel to the shipping pallet. Take care not to damage the assembly as you roll the reel to installation location. Excessive nicks and cuts in the outer jacketing can cause failure. Place reel on stands to lift off the ground so the reel can spin freely while still being controlled by hand.

Lift the shrink wrap away from the cable before removing with scissors. Cable is transported on a double flange reel so both ends may be accessed for pre-testing if required.

Place reel on jack stands
