SUMMARY
Use this guide to replace a cracked front panel or a broken LCD.
After successfully replacing the display assembly, protect your new display from scratchesby installing a screen protector.

Step 1 — Rear Panel
Before disassembling youriPhone, be sure it ispowered off.
Remove the two 3.6 mm Pentalobescrews next to the dock connector.
During reassembly, werecommend you replace the5-point screws with equivalentPhillips screws. Our Liberation Kitprovides the tools and screwsneeded to replace the Pentalobescrews with Phillips screws.
The 5-Point Screwdrivershould only be used once,as it has the potential to strip thescrews.

Step 2
Push the rear panel toward the top edge of the iPhone.
The panel will move about 2 mm.
Step 3
Pull the rear panel away from theback of the iPhone, being carefulnot to damage the plastic clipsattached to the rear panel.
Remove the rear panel from theiPhone.

Step 4 — Battery
Remove the following screwssecuring the battery connector tothe logic board:
One 1.7 mm Phillips screw
One 1.5 mm Phillips screw
Step 5
Use a plastic opening tool to pull the pressure contact from underneath the batteryconnector.
When reinstalling the pressure contact, be sure to clean it with a degreaser such aswindex or isopropyl alcohol. The oils on your fingers have the potential to createwireless interference.

Step 6
Use the edge of a plastic openingtool to gently pry the batteryconnector up from its socket on thelogic board.
Be very careful to only pryup on the battery connectorand not the connector on the logicboard. If you pry up on the logicboard connector, you may breakthe connector entirely.
Step 7
Insert the edge of a plastic opening tool between the battery and the outer case near thebottom left corner of the iPhone.
Run the plastic opening tool along the right edge of the battery and pry up at several pointsto completely separate it from the adhesive securing it to the outer case.

Step 8
Use the exposed clear plastic pull tab to peel the battery off the adhesive securing it to theiPhone.
Remove the battery.
Step 9 — Dock Connector Cable
Remove the following screws securing the dock connector cable cover to the logic board:
One 1.5 mm Phillips screw
One 1.2 mm Phillips screw
Remove the metal dock connector cable cover.

Step 10
Use the edge of a plastic openingtool to pry the dock cable up fromits socket on the logic board.
Step 11
Peel the dock connector cable offthe adhesive securing it to the logicboard and the side of the speakerenclosure.

Step 12
Use the edge of a plastic opening tool to pry the Wi-Fi antenna cable up from its socket onthe logic board.
De-route the Wi-Fi antenna cable out from under the metal fingers attached to the logicboard.
Step 13 — Rear Camera
If present, use a pair oftweezers to remove theouter plastic ring located on top ofthe rear camera's flash assembly.

Step 14
Remove the following four screwssecuring the cable cover to thelogic board:
One 2.7 mm Phillips screw
One 2.6 mm Phillips screw
One 1.3 mm Phillips screw
One 1.2 mm Phillips screw

Use the edge of a plastic opening tool to pry the cable cover tabs out of their slots cut intothe EMI shield on the logic board.
Lift the cable cover from its edge nearest the top and remove it from the iPhone.

Step 16
Use the edge of a plastic opening tool to pry the rear camera connector up from its socketon the logic board.
Be careful not to break any components off the surrounding area on the logic boardas you pry upwards.
Remove the rear camera from the iPhone.
Step 17 — SIM Card
Use a SIM card eject tool or a paperclip to eject the SIM card and its holder.
This may require a significant amount of force.
Remove the SIM card and its holder.

Step 18 — Logic Board
Remove the five cables near the top of the logic board in the following order:
Headphone jack/volume button cable
Front facing camera cable
Digitizer cable
Display data cable
Power button cable (located underneath the headphone jack/volume button cable asshown in the second picture.)
To disconnect the cables, use the edge of a plastic opening tool to gently lift theirconnectors up and out of the sockets on the logic board.
Be careful not to break any of the small and delicate surface mount components asyou disconnect the cables.

Step 19
Remove the 1.5 mm Phillips screwsecuring the grounding clip to thelogic board near the headphonejack.
Step 20
Lift the small grounding clip up offthe logic board and remove it fromthe iPhone.

Use a small flathead screwdriver toremove the 4.8 mm standoff nearthe headphone jack.
Step 22
Use the edge of a plastic openingtool to disconnect the wi-fi antennafrom the logic board.

If present, peel the piece of black tape covering the hidden screw near the power button.
Remove the 1.6 mm Phillips screw securing the logic board near the power button.
(Use caution when removing this screw and removing the power contact held by it; thecontact tab will come lose with the screw)
Step 24
Remove the following screwssecuring the logic board to thecase:
One 2.5 mm Phillips screw nearthe vibrator motor
One 2.4 mm Phillips screw
One 3.6 mm standoff along theside of the logic board nearestthe battery opening.
Use a small flatheadscrewdriver to remove thesingle 3.6 mm standoff.

Step 25
Carefully lift the logic board fromthe end closest to the speakerenclosure and slide it away fromthe top edge of the iPhone.
Remove the logic board.
Before reassembly, be sureto clean all metal-to-metalcontact points on the logic board(not the mating halves ofconnectors) with a de-greaser suchas windex or isopropyl alcohol. Theoils on your fingers have thepotential to cause groundingissues.
Step 26
Be sure not to lose thesmall grounding finger forthe rear facing camera near thepower button. This finger rests ontop of the PCB, screwed down, andcovered with the adhesive blackplastic tape.

Step 27 — Vibrator
Wedge the plastic opening tool between the vibrator and the side of the iPhone.
Pry the vibrator up to release it from the adhesive securing it to the iPhone.
Remove the vibrator.
Step 28 — Speaker Enclosure Assembly
Remove the two 2.4 mm Phillipsscrews from the sides of thespeaker enclosure assembly.

Remove the small plastic bracketthat was installed under the screwclosest to the dock connectorcable.

Remove the speaker enclosure assembly from the iPhone.
Before reinstalling the speaker enclosure assembly's screws, be sure the Wi-Figrounding fingers are installed below the lip in the iPhone's metal case as seen inthe second picture.
Before reassembly, be sure to clean all metal-to-metal contact points between thegrounding fingers of the Wi-Fi antenna and the case of the iPhone with a de-greasersuch as windex or isopropyl alcohol. The oils on your fingers have the potential to causewireless interference issues.

Remove the small pieces of blacktape covering the display mountingtabs.

Remove the 1.5 mm Phillips screwsecuring the display assembly nearthe power button.

It is not necessary to completely remove these screws. When reinstalling thedisplay assembly, be sure the washers are closest to the screw head (as seen inthe second picture).

Step 38
Use the edge of a plastic opening tool to gently pry up the display assembly around itsperimeter.
Remove the display assembly from the iPhone.
When reinstalling the display assembly, make sure the digitizer and display datacable are completely pulled through the slot cut into the outer case. Otherwise, thedigitizer cable will not reach to its socket on the logic board.
Remember to switch the home button from your old display to the new display (inmost cases, this is not provided). Also check that the mesh for the speaker hole ispresent in the replacement; if not, move it over from the old display.
After reassembly, protect your new display from any scratches by installing a newscreen protector.
