Summary

This document describes the steps for installing SES Software 14 on Windows 8.

There is a special requirement for installing one of the prerequisites of SES Software 14 – Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0. The installers for the

.NET Framework 2.0 that are distributed with SES Software 14 are not compatible with Windows 8. Windows 8 will recognize this incompatibility

and will accommodate by downloading the correct installer and install it automatically. This change in behavior requires an Internet connection

during the installation of SES Software 14.

Unlike Windows 7, Window 8 does not come stock with Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0. In the prerequisite phase of the installation of SES

Software 14, the installer will offer to download and install Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 if this version of the Framework is not already

installed. Framework 3.5 also contains .NET Framework 2.0, so it fulfills the prerequisite’s requirement.

If you have an Internet connection, then you may proceed with the installation of Framework 3.5 and continue with the rest of the installation of

SES Software 14. However, if you do not have an Internet connection, then you may use the DISM (Deployment Image Servicing and

Management) tool that comes preinstalled on Windows 8 to install Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 from your Windows 8 installation DVD; then

start the SES Software 14 installation. Please refer to Step-B of the Prerequisite Phase section below for further details.

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR 14.0.380/14.1.40/14.2.18: During the first-time installation of SES Software 14 on Windows 8, please do not attach the

software protection dongle (USB key) to your computer until the driver for the dongle has been installed by the SES Software installer (as

described in the Driver Installation Phase section). Please refer to the section, Activating the License on the Dongle, in which you will be required

to attach the dongle to your computer in order to carry out the license activation phase.

Please keep the dongle attached to your computer once the license has been activated on the dongle.

If you detach the dongle and then reattach it to the computer one or more times, then you may observe a side-effect in SESLicenseManager and

in the “Help > About” dialogs of the main programs that display the dongle more than once in a drop-down list. This side-effect is harmless and

does not affect the proper operation of the software. A reboot of your computer, while keeping the dongle attached to your computer, will

eliminate this side-effect. Please note that if you need to either renew or activate your license when the side-effect is present, you will be

required to perform a reboot of your computer in order for SESLicenseManager to function properly.

Prerequisite Phase

A. The list of prerequisites are shown at the start of the installation.

B. Windows 8 does not come preinstalled with Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0. It needs to be installed by downloading the Microsoft .NET

Framework 3.5 package that includes .NET Framework 2.0. SES Software 14 installer will offer to download and install Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5. Note that the installers for Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 (32-bit and 64-bit) that come stock with the SES Software 14 distributions are not compatible with Windows 8. There are two known sources from which Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 can be retrieved:

downloaded and installed from Windows Update using the Windows Features dialog; or installed from the Windows 8 DVD using the DISM tool.

Apart from the above two sources, Microsoft has not provided other sources (e.g., self-extracting downloadable package) for .NET Framework 3.5 that can be supported by Windows 8. When SES Software 14 is being installed on Windows 8 that does not already have .NET Framework 2.0 installed, then the installer will show the Windows Features dialog to offer to download and install Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5. If you have an Internet connection at this time, then you should follow the dialog instructions to allow .NET Framework 3.5 to be downloaded and installed. If you do not have an Internet connection, then you must exit the installation of SES Software 14 and proceed to install .NET Framework 3.5 using the DISM tool. Please note that it is important to first install Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 before continuing with the rest of the installation of SES Software 14. The installer uses the components of .NET Framework 2.0 during the installation of SES Software 14; without .NET Framework 2.0, the installation of SES Software 14 will fail.

If you have an Internet connection, then proceed with the downloading process provided by the Windows Features dialog; .NET Framework 3.5 will be downloaded and installed. The SES Software 14 installer will then proceed with the rest of the installation process.

Alternatively, before starting the SES Software 14 installation, Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 may be installed directly from the Windows 8 facility: Control Panel > Programs and Features > Turn Windows features on or off. (Note that an Internet connection is also required for this method of installation).

If you do not have an Internet connection at the time of the installation of SES Software 14, then an off-line installation can be made for Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5. The command-line utility, DISM (Deployment Image Servicing and Management), which comes preinstalled on Windows 8, can be used to source the .NET Framework 3.5 distribution from the Windows 8 installation DVD. The command line below will instruct DISM to install Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 (NetFx3) without querying Windows Update (LimitAccess) but, instead, install from the Windows 8 installation DVD (c:\temp\win8\sources\sxs). DISM /Online /Enable-Feature /FeatureName:NetFx3 /All /LimitAccess /Source:c:\temp\win8\sources\sxs The utility will then perform the installation of Framework 3.5 from the specified location. Once it has been installed, you may verify from the Windows Features dialog that Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 has been installed.

C. If you have installed Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 via Windows Features (from the Control Panel) or DISM, then please restart the installer

for SES Software 14. The prerequisite, Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0, Service Pack 2, will not be listed since .NET Framework 3.5 has already been installed (it includes .NET Framework 2.0).

D. Proceeding with the installation, the prerequisite, Microsoft DirectX9 End-user Redistributable, will be next in line for installation.

E. Proceeding with the installation, the prerequisite, Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable SP1, will be next in line for installation.

F. Proceeding with the installation, the prerequisite, Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable SP1 Update, will be next in line for installation.

G. Proceeding with the installation, the prerequisite, SlimDX Runtime for Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0, will be next in line for installation.

H. Proceeding with the installation, the final prerequisite, SES Software System, 14.0.225, will be installed.

Core Installation Phase

Once the core installation of SES Software 14 starts, please continue with its dialogs to select the options that you would normally choose to suit your working environment.

Driver Installation Phase

Once the installer has finished installing the files for SES Software 14, it will start the final phase of installing the driver for the security dongle (if the option, Use Personal License, was selected in the License Type dialog of the installer).

The driver that is included with the distribution of the software (14.0.380/14.1.40/14.2.18) is not guaranteed to work on all Windows 8 computers; thus, it is strongly recommended to cancel/exit the driver installation. A new version of the HASP driver was released in March 2013 that is fully Windows 8 compliant and it should be used instead. An update of this driver is available to download from the link below. Please follow the alternative steps below to install the driver:

1. Download the driver setup program, http://www.sestech.com/common/postinst/hasp_driver/haspusersetup.exe [13.8 MB], to a known location on your computer.

2. Open a File Explorer and browse to the known location where the driver setup program has been downloaded.

3. Run the driver setup program, HaspUserSetup.exe, and install to completion.

Configuring the Security Profile

The security profile may be set up by starting SESNetKey. This can be done from the Search > Apps section.

In SESNetKey, add the appropriate information for the dongle that you will be using with SES Software 14 and save the configuration.

Activating the License on the Dongle

Attach the dongle to an available USB port of your computer. At this point Windows will show that it is installing the USB device, HASP HL 3.25. The red light on the dongle will come on, indicating that the system has recognized the dongle on the USB port. The license on the dongle may be activated by starting SESLicenseManager. This can be done from the Search > Apps section.

SESLicenseManager will issue a message that the license requires activation.

You can acquire access to the license file by either downloading it using the same credentials for downloading SES Software. Or if you have been sent the license file by email, then browse to it.

Starting CDEGS

From the Tiles interface of Windows 8, you may scroll across to the apps and click on the CDEGS tile.
