UNITED STATES PROVISIONAL PATENT APPLICATION

REPLACEABLE EYEGLASS FRAME INVENTOR: ADAM KANEFSKY FIELD OF THE INVENTION:

[0001] The present invention relates to the field of eyeglass frames, and

more particularly to an eyeglass frame that is adapted for mounting to an existing

pair of eyeglass lenses in replacement of another eyeglass frame.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION:

[0002] Eyeglasses are an assembly of a pair of lenses mounted in a frame.

Due to various reasons, it is not uncommon for the frame to become damaged,

requiring the user to purchase a new frame. If the user wishes to continue to use

the existing lenses, it is generally necessary to have an optometrist or technician

install the lenses in the new frames.

[0003] In addition to the potential for damage, an eyeglass user may wish to

change eyeglass frames for reasons of fashion or simply to look different. In either

case of damage or appearance, a need exists for an eyeglass frame that can be

readily changed by the eyeglass user while keeping the existing lenses.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS:

[0004] Figure 1 is a perspective view of a replaceable eyeglass frame

holding a pair of lenses according to the present invention.

Figure 2A is an exploded top plan view of a left temple assembly of

the eyeglass frame of Figure 1.

Figure 2B is an exploded top plan view of a right temple assembly of

the eyeglass frame of Figure 1.

Figure 3 is an exploded top plan view of a bridge assembly of the

eyeglass frame of Figure 1.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT:

[0005] Referring to Figure 1, a replaceable eyeglass frame 10 of the

invention is illustrated in perspective view. Eyeglass frame 10 is configured for

removably mounting a pair of lenses 14a, 14b. A left ear bar 16a is pivotably

mounted to a temple assembly 20a by means of a hinge pin 18. Temple

assembly 20a is securely clamped to an outer end of a lens 14a as will be

described in detail below. A mirror image set of right ear bar 16b and right temple

assembly 20b is securely clamped to an outer end of lens 14b. Hinge pin 18 (and

a hinge pin between right ear bar 16b and right temple assembly 20b, not visible)

allows each ear bar 16a, 16b to swing closed in the direction indicated by arrows A

for storage. A bridge 40 is securely clamped to an inner end of lens 14a and an

inner end of lens 14b as will be described in detail below. Left ear bar 16a, left

temple assembly 20a, bridge 40, right temple assembly 20b, and right ear bar 16b

comprise replaceable eyeglass frame 10.

[0006] Referring now to Figure 2A and Figure 2B, left temple assembly 20a

and right temple assembly 20b are substantially mirror images of one another

shown in exploded top plan view. The following description refers to left temple

assembly 20a, while applying in principle equally to right temple assembly 20b. A

temple bracket 22a appears substantially in the form of a capital letter “F” when

seen from above. Temple bracket 22a has a resilient jaw formed in boss 32a in

the center of the “F” and a hinge portion 38a at the bottom of the “F”. A temple

clamp 24a has a threaded bore 26a formed therethrough, bore 26a being oriented

at an angle to the body of temple clamp 24a. A screw 30a with a knurled head is

provided, screw 30a being sized to be threaded through bore 26a of clamp 24a.

When assembled, the tip of screw 30a is inserted into cavity 34a and the body of

screw 30a is snapped into the resilient jaw opening formed in boss 32a. In this

position, a portion of the head of screw 30a protrudes through a window 36a formed

through the side wall of temple bracket 22a. The head of screw 30a is now

exposed on both the inner side and the outer side of temple bracket 22a to be

Page 18: Instant Frames Brochure and Patent Application

rotated by the fingers of the user. As screw 30a is rotated, clamp 24a is moved to

engage or disengage lens 14a (see Fig. 1). The angular orientation of clamp 24a

in relation to the axis of screw 30a enables clamp 24a to aggressively engage lens

14a.

[0007] Referring now to Figure 3, bridge 40 is shown in exploded top plan

view. Bridge bracket 42 is formed with a pair of nests 50a, 50b that are configured

to receive a cylindrical portion of each bridge clamp 44a, 44b. Bracket 42 is

formed with a pair of holes 52. A pair of springs 48a, 48b, preferably torsion

springs, are provided with a first tip adapted for being held in each hole 52 and a

second tip adapted for being held by each bridge clamp 44a, 44b. Each bridge

clamp 44a, 44b has a pad 46a, 46b mounted thereto.

[0008] In accordance with the principles of the invention, the ear bars 16a,

16b, temple brackets 22a, 22b, bridge bracket 40 and clamps 24a, 24b, 44a, 44b

are made by the process of injection molding with a high impact resistant plastic

resin, e.g. acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS). Pads 28a, 28b, 46a, 46b are

formed of a resilient resin with a relatively high coefficient of friction, e.g. silicone

rubber, and are permanently mounted to respective portions of the eyeglass frame.

[0009] The replaceable eyeglass frame described herein therefore provides

means for installing a pair of eyeglass lenses into a different frame for reasons of

damage, style, or personal preference. A pair of lenses are removed from the

damaged or unwanted traditional lenses. The user opens each bridge clamp 44a,

44b, places each lens between a mating set of bridge pads 46a, 46b and releases

bridge clamps 44a, 44b to firmly hold the lenses. Each temple assembly 20a, 20b

is positioned with the outer end of each lens between temple pads 28a, 28b. The

user then rotates screws 30a, 30b to bring temple clamps 24a, 24b into firm contact

with the lenses. The completed pair of eyeglasses with the old lenses held in a

replaceable eyeglass frame of the invention is now ready for wearing.

[0010] While the description above discloses preferred embodiments of the

present invention, it is contemplated that numerous variations and modifications of

the invention are possible and are considered to be within the scope of the claims

that follow.

Re: Provisional Patent Application No. 611757,295REPLACEABLE EYEGLASS FRAME

Dear Adam:

This is to confirm that your above identified provisional patent application was

filed with the U.S. Patent Office today. You are now entitled to use the term

Patent Pending, {or Pat. Pend.) ar Patent Applied For (or Pat. Appl. For) on

products and promotional literature described in this application'

The term Patent Pending does not give rise to any legal right to prevent a

competitor from copying your invention. lt does, however, warn a potential

competitor of the existence of your patent application. Since patent applications

are held in secret by the Patent Office, a potential competitor cannot know when

you may obtain a patent or what your patent will cover, therefore a competitor is

hot likely to invest in developing and marketing a product which may have a very

short commercial life.

A provisional patent application allows an inventor to develop details or test

market the invention. A provisional patent application will not be examined or

ever Decome a patent unless a related nonprovisional utility patent application is

submitted within 12 months of the filing date of the provisional application, i.e. by

not later than January 28, 2414.

Thank you for this opportunity to be of service'

Sincerely,
