CORE is

the only institute specifically dedicated to research on the OSCE

a relatively young think tank, founded in January 2000

not a classical academic institution, but one that engages in a combination of research, capacity-building services, publications, and teaching

independent of the OSCE, with which it enjoys good working relations

one of two main sections within the IFSH, one of Germany’s two largest peace research institutes

CORE combines basic research on the OSCE and other multilateral organizations with consultancy, capacity building, and other services provided on a contract basis.

Example of Institution Building: OSCE Academy Bishkek

CORE created a detailed plan of the Academy and also assisted with:fundraising, developing a curriculum, and selecting teaching staff and students.

CORE members have also performed in a teaching and supervisory role.

CORE activities in Central Asia

Since 2002, CORE has undertaken projects in all the Central Asian states except Turkmenistan and has engaged in co-operation with Central Asia experts.  CORE’s most prominent project in Central Asia involves mediating in a peacebuilding dialogue between moderate Islamists and secular forces. Between 2001 and 2003, this project took place in Tajikistan, since 2007/2008 it has been extended to the regional level.
