6. Young Scientist Workshop on “Carrier Development”: “Bridging agap between education and career in electromagnetics and photonics”

(YSWCD)

Our IRE SPIE Student Chapter continued a good tradition of being co-organizersof Carrier Development workshop in frame of Annual Kharkiv Young ScientistsConference on Radiophysics, Electronics, Photonics and Biophysics. Conferencetraditionally was hosted by A.Ya. Usikov Institute of Radiophysics and Electronics ofthe National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (IRE NASU) from 2 to 5 of December2013. This Institute was founded in 1955 on the basis of the former Departments ofElectromagnetic Oscillations and Radio Wave Propagation of the Kharkov Institute ofPhysics and Technology of NASU. And Young Scientists Conference onElectromagnetics, Photonics and Biophysics unites students, young scientists andresearchers from the former Soviet Union and Western countries.

The program of Carrier Development usually includes invited lectures, presentations of activities of scientific professional organizations (OSA, SPIE, IEEE,etc. and their local student chapters) and master-classes from leading experts. This timewe tried to make YSWCD in Webinar format.

This year YSWCD was organized not only for attracting attention student andyoung scientists to different professional organizations including student chapters ofOSA, SPIE, IEEE. One part of this workshop was devoted to self education. And one ofthe main points was learning how to write articles in refereed journals. Another part wasdevoted to presentations of chapters and the available opportunities for students willingto continue their scientific careers. Participation in YSWCD is an opportunity for ourchapter to present ourselves as well as attract students to enter IRE NASU.

Program of this year Workshop included such reports:

Conducting the workshop in webinar format required serious preparation:

7. Outreach activities.

This year for our IRE SPIE Student chapter was full of serious scientific eventssuch as International Conferences and Workshops. But we have not forgotten about theyounger generation.

One of the most famous universities in the city – Karazin’s Kharkiv NationalUniversity holds special preparatory courses in physics for schoolchildren. Thesecourses allow showing the beauty of physics for children. Our chapter was involved inthese courses and shows the demonstrations of simple optical experiments that help tounderstand and see the fundamental principles of optics.
