Program and has extensive experience as an Urban and Landscape Designer in the private sector.

His presentation entitled “Auburn University Transportation Master Planning” exposed those in

attendance to the University’s transportation planning process and vision including how

projected land-use, parking demand, transit, and game-day events influence the plan.

Attendance: 11

April 10, 2014 – Liz Hammer, Analyst at Kimley-Horn and Associates and graduate of Auburn

University’s Civil Engineering Program, presented a lecture entitled “Signal Timing

Optimization”. The lecture provided members insight not only into the optimization process but

also a unique perspective of experiences they may encounter in the workplace. Attendance: 16

April 17, 2014 – At the final student chapter meeting of the semester, Mr. John Funny, President

and CEO of Grice Consulting LLC, presented a lecture entitled “Careers in Transportation and

Mechanical Engineering at Auburn University, presented a seminar titled “PPS and Sensor

Fusion for ITS Applications”. Dr. Bevly’s presentation highlighted his extensive research

experience in the field of autonomous vehicles and introduced members to the rapidly emerging

field. Attendance: 33

November 6, 2014 – Auburn University and the ITE student chapter welcomed Jim Meads,

President and CEO of Sain Associates. Jim received his Bachelor in Civil Engineering in 1983

from the University of Alabama at Birmingham before compiling 30 years of distinguished

experience in traffic engineering and transportation planning. He presented a lecture titled “What

They Don’t Teach You in Engineering School”. The presentation provided a focus on real world

technical challenges and ethical dilemmas facing engineers on a daily basis. Attendance: 28

November 13, 2014 – Phillip Cherry, an Engineer at Parsons Brinckerhoff, Atlanta, presented

“Falcons Stadium Study”. His presentation discussed the transportation challenges, and

SERVICE PROJECTS

February 28, 2014 - Auburn University College of Engineering E-Day - During the Spring

2014 semester, the Auburn University student chapter of the Institute of Transportation

Engineers (AUITE) was able to continue its support of Engineering Day (E-Day), the annual

open house for Auburn University’s Samuel Ginn College of Engineering. Middle and high

school students who are considering a career in engineering had a chance to learn about the

Auburn campus, engineering programs, and the opportunities the Samuel Ginn College of

Engineering offers. Students had a chance to chat with Auburn students and faculty, experience

interactive exhibits, and visit classes and labs. They could also tour the Auburn campus, and

learn about admissions, scholarships, financial aid, and residence life. The AUITE Student

Chapter had the responsibility of introducing Auburn University while on Tiger Transit and

answering questions asked by prospective students and their parents. Volunteers: 14

September 15-19, 2014 – The City of Auburn Travel with Care Program - During the Fall 2014

semester, the AU student chapter supported the City of Auburn’s Travel with Care program,

which focuses on traffic safety through the promotion of knowledge on a range of issues,

especially pedestrian, bicycle, and motorcycle-related. The program provides public education

by asking people to answer a questionnaire with questions about laws and legislations such as

jaywalking, proper passing of transit and school buses, motorcycle regulations, pedestrian rights,

and bicycle laws. After the completion of the quiz, gifts such as reflective t-shirts and bicycle

lights were awarded. Volunteers: 14

CONCLUSION The Auburn University Student Chapter participated in a wide array of activities through the year

of 2014. These activities included ITE supported trips, service projects, and participation with

both ALSITE and SDITE. Our nine student chapter meetings allowed students to see various

presentations of where transportation expertise is being used both professionally and in academic

research. The 2014 year continued the trend for the Student Chapter in both quality and quantity

of work and we look forward to this trend continuing through 2015. The officers involved

recognize the benefits of being student members of the Institute of Transportation Engineers. We

will continue to relay these benefits to our members and share in the experiences that ITE

enables.
