Community Health GrantsThe Community Health Grant is designed to bring together academic researchers and community organizations/ programs to improve health and well-being in community settings. Acting in partnership, researchers and community organizations are invited to submit proposals that:

1.         Apply existing knowledge about health to real-world settings (also known as translational research)

2.         Demonstrate shared decision-making in all aspects of research activities intended to improve outcomes for our community’s children and adults

Applicants have the opportunity to receive up to $20,000 for a one-year funding period. The funds will be awarded to partnerships between academic and community organizations or physicians that translate research into practice.

Community programs, agencies, physician practices and other not-for-profit organizations may apply as community partners or community principal investigators. Faculty or affiliates of CCTST partnering institutions may be considered academic partners or academic principal investigators. Each application must have at least one academic partner and one community partner. New or developing partnerships may want to consider applying for the Partnership Development Grant (details below).

Partnership Development Grants

The Partnership Development Grant facilitates collaborations between academic researchers and community organizations so they can work together on health research that benefits the community. Funding can be used to develop new partnerships or to strengthen existing partnerships. These grants will allow partnerships to conduct preliminary research activities focused on health outcomes and impact that will prepare teams to apply for research grants.

Community-academic partnerships have the opportunity to receive up to $5,000 for a one-year funding period. We expect funding will be used to support preliminary research activities.

Proposals must include at least one community partner and at least one academic partner. Community programs, agencies, physician practices and other not-for-profit organizations may apply as community partners or community principal investigators. Faculty or affiliates of CCTST partnering institutions may be considered academic partners or academic principal investigators. Applicants can be working together for the first time or part of an existing collaboration that is looking to take the next step in their work together.

Optional Letters of Intent were due November 15.  Final proposals are due January 15, 2018.

INSTITUTIONALKresge Foundation Issues RFP for Early Childhood Fellowship Program Coordinating OfficeThe Kresge Foundation is seeking applications from organizations interested in serving as the coordinating office for the Kresge Early Years for Success (KEYS): Detroit Fellowship, a professional and leadership development opportunity for early childhood educators in Detroit. The program is designed to improve the skills and capacity of early childhood educators to serve young children; bolster the capacity of organizations that provide early childhood professional development in Detroit; and recognize and promote the role and value of early childhood educators. Kresge intends to run the initial pilot for three years and evaluate and continue the fellowship after the initial period, with the foundation selecting between fifteen and twenty-five fellows annually in 2018, 2019, and 2020. Award recipients will be high-performing and/or high-potential educators (including classroom teachers or administrators) working with children ages 0-4 in the city of Detroit. The maximum anticipated budget for this effort is $150,000 per year and is negotiable. The amount awarded is intended to cover all planning and coordination functions, program design, contracts with external organizations for field scans and research, assessment and coordination of professional development for fellows, contracts with organizations involved in fellow cohort professional development opportunities, and feedback and improvement efforts. To that end, CATCH is accepting applications for its CATCH Planning and Implementation Grants program and CATCH Resident Grants program.1) Planning and Implementation Grants: Grants of up to $10,000 will be awarded to individual pediatricians and fellowship trainees for the planning of innovative community-based child health initiatives that ensure all children in the community have access to healthcare services not otherwise available. Priority will be given to projects that serve communities with the greatest health disparities. Outreach must be to the community at large, not to practice or clinic patients only, and all initiatives should incorporate screening for or connecting children to medical homes and available insurance programs. PCORI Invites LOIs for Patient-Centered Healthcare ResearchThe Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute helps people make informed healthcare decisions and works to improve healthcare delivery and outcomes by producing and promoting high-integrity evidence-based information and research informed by patients, caregivers, and the broader healthcare community. To that end, PCORI is inviting Letters of Inquiry for its Eugene Washington PCORI Engagement Awards program. Through the program, the institute will award grants of up to $250,000 over two years to projects that encourage the active integration of patients, caregivers, clinicians, and other healthcare stakeholders as integral members of the patient-centered outcomes research/clinical effectiveness research (PCOR/CER) enterprise. Applications may be submitted by any private or public-sector organization, including any nonprofit or for-profit organization or any unit of local, state, or federal government. All U.S. applicant nonprofit organizations must be recognized by the Internal Revenue Service. Non-domestic components of organizations based in the United States and foreign organizations may apply, as long as there is demonstrable benefit to the U.S. healthcare system and U.S. efforts in the area of patient-centered research can be clearly shown. J.M. Kaplan Fund Offers Grants to Nonprofit PublishersThrough its Furthermore program, the J.M. Kaplan Fund supports nonfiction book publishing about the urban experience; natural and historic resources; art, architecture, and design; cultural history; and civil liberties and other public issues. The program seeks work that appeals to an informed general audience; demonstrates evidence of high standards in editing, design, and production; promises a reasonable shelf life; might not otherwise achieve top quality or even come into being; and "represents a contribution without which we would be the poorer." Individual grants range from $1,500 to approximately $15,000 and may be used to support writing, research, editing, design, indexing, photography, illustration, and/or printing and binding. Vodafone Americas Foundation Announces Tenth Annual Wireless Innovation PrizeThe Vodafone Americas Foundation has announced its tenth annual Wireless Innovation Project, which offers applicants the opportunity to win up to $300,000 for innovative mobile solutions with potential to solve critical global problems. The program is designed to recognize the growth taking place in mobile innovation and the potential for mobile and wireless technology to help solve critical social problems around the world. Winners in previous years have received additional funding that has enabled them to further develop and grow their innovations as well as hire talent. The mobile or wireless solution must have the potential to solve a problem in the areas of access to education, health, access to communication, economic development, and the environment/disaster relief. Captain Planet Foundation Accepting Applications for Ecotech GrantsThe Captain Planet Foundation is accepting applications from schools and nonprofit organizations for its Ecotech Grant program, an initiative to support projects that motivate children through science, technology, engineering, and math while challenging them to re-imagine the way their world can be. Grants of $2,500 will be awarded to schools or nonprofit organizations for projects that use innovation, nature-based design, and/or technology to address environmental problems in their communities. Projects should integrate environmental education with opportunities for children to solve real-world problems by using science practices and technology to help care for the environment. Projects may replicate successful models or create new and innovative approaches. Preference will be given to applicants who have secured $2,500 in matching funds or in-kind contributions. In addition to a year of study, the fellowship includes a fieldwork period during which fellows will work on a public service journalism project for their home news organization and participate in specialized journalism education. During their fieldwork period, fellows will return to Harvard periodically, where they will create materials and content for Nieman Foundation publications. The fellows also will have opportunities to deepen skills such as audience development and engagement; database journalism; digital storytelling; FOIA requests and research; narrative reporting; and investigative tools and techniques. Ucross Foundation Accepting Applications for Fall Artist ResidenciesFounded in 1981, the Ucross Foundation provides uninterrupted time, work space, and living accommodations to competitively selected visual artists, writers, and composers.  Nearly thirteen-hundred individuals have spent time at Ucross since it first opened our doors in Sheridan, Wyoming.  They have come from every state in the U.S. as well as from many countries, including Germany, France, Scotland, England, Poland, Egypt, the Netherlands, Canada, Thailand, and others. Currently, the foundation is accepting applications for its 2018 Fall Residency program, which runs from August to December. Residencies vary in length from two weeks to six weeks. At any one time, there are up to nine individuals in residence, a mix of visual artists, writers and composers.  In most cases, studios are separate from living quarters. Lunch and dinners are prepared Monday to Friday by a professional chef with ample provisions on hand for breakfasts and weekends. In addition, there is cell phone service on the property and several wireless internet connection sites are available for resident use. Residents are responsible for providing their own working materials and for their travel to Sheridan, Wyoming. While there is a $40 nonrefundable application fee, there is no charge for a residency. Artists, writers, and composers from around the United States and the world, in all stages of their professional careers, are invited to apply to work on individual or collaborative projects. A Kids' Brain Tumor Cure Accepting LOIs for PLGA Tumor ResearchA Kids Brain Tumor Cure is a national nonprofit organization founded in 2007 by a group of dedicated parents, physicians, and friends to improve the treatment, quality of life, and long-term outlook for children with brain tumors. The number-one priority of the organization is to encourage investigators worldwide to turn their attention to the area of pediatric low-grade glioma (PLGA) brain tumor research and award research grants for the most promising programs and studies. It is hoped that the research will lead to a better understanding of the causes of PLGA, as well as the discovery of more effective treatments and a cure for the most common forms of pediatric brain tumors. Thrasher Research Fund Invites Concept Papers for Early Career GrantsThe Thrasher Research Fund provides grants for clinical, hypothesis-driven research that offers substantial promise for meaningful advances in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of children's diseases, particularly research that offers broad-based applications. The fund is inviting concept papers for its Early Career Awards Grants program. Through the program, the fund awards small grants of up to $25,000 to new researchers to help them gain a foothold in the area of pediatric research. The program will consider a variety of research topics important to children's health but will give priority to applicants who show great potential to impact children's health through medical research. Both an applicant's aptitude and inclination toward research will be considered. The program is open to physicians who are in a residency/fellowship training program or who completed that program no more than one year before the date of submission of the concept paper, as well as postdoctoral researchers who received the doctoral level degree no more than three years prior to the date of submission of the concept paper. Pancreatic Cancer Network Accepting Applications for Translational Research ProgramThe Pancreatic Cancer Action Network is accepting applications for its 2018 Pancreatic Cancer Action Network Translational Research Grant program. Grants of up to $500,000 over two years will be awarded for high-priority pancreatic cancer research that is poised for important translational next steps to help move scientific discovery to application in patients. This year, PCAN has partnered with the Celgene Corporation to accelerate the development of novel therapies by establishing strong relationships between academia and industry through research grants. Funded projects will benefit from industry input and insight, leading to an accelerated translation into a therapeutic product. Projects should aim to identify novel targets and approaches to the treatment of pancreatic cancer or understand and circumvent treatment resistance. Of particular interest are projects that fall into at least one of these three areas of research: a) immune context and tumor microenvironment interactions; (b) regulators of pathogenesis, progression and metabolism, with particular interest in epigenetic mechanisms; and (c) transcriptional networks essential for viability and maintenance of malignant phenotype. It is anticipated that four Translational Research grants will be awarded in 2018. American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons Accepting Applications for Career Development GrantsThe primary mission of the Research Foundation of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons is to raise and award funds to support research and educational programs related to colon and rectal diseases. Over the past twenty years, the foundation has awarded more than a hundred and twenty grants totaling $4 million to colorectal surgeons and researchers in support of their efforts to investigate a broad spectrum of colorectal diseases and to develop novel surgical techniques pertinent to the care of colorectal patients. The goal of the foundation's Career Development Award is to provide young surgeons with the support necessary for the initiation and development of an academic career in colorectal surgery. The CDA focuses on career development and mentorship of the individual rather than solely on the research proposal. The award is intended for the academic investigator demonstrating significant creativity in research relevant to the pathophysiology or management of diseases of the small bowel, colon, rectum, or anus. Grants of up to $75,000 per year for two years will be awarded through the program. National Psoriasis Foundation Issues RFP for Discovery GrantThe National Psoriasis Foundation is seeking applications from researchers with innovative ideas that can advance research on psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. Grants of up to $75,000 will be awarded to support researchers as they explore preliminary ideas and conduct proof-of-concept experiments. The goal of the program is to stimulate the development of new research programs in the field of psoriatic disease that are capable of competing for long-term funding from the National Institutes of Health or other agencies in the future. Researchers with a specific focus on psoriatic arthritis, public health, and co-morbidities are strongly encouraged to apply. To be eligible, the principal investigator must be personally and actively responsible for the conduct of the proposed research and be eligible to apply for research grants under the guidelines of the applicant's host institution. DDCF Accepting Applications for Clinical Research MentorshipThe Doris Duke Charitable Foundation is accepting applications for its Clinical Research Mentorship program. The annual program provides previously funded Doris Duke investigators the opportunity to foster the next generation of clinical researchers by mentoring a medical student for a year. Through the program, past and present principal investigators with a medical research grant from DDCF identify a medical student to mentor for a year and then apply as a team. Alternatively, medical students identify a

The student's year away from school will start in the summer of 2018 and end in the summer of 2019. DDCF expects to make awards to ten mentor/mentee teams in 2018. To be eligible, mentees must be a student in good standing at any U.S.-based medical school working on an MD or DO. Klingenstein Fund Invites Applications for Neuroscience FellowshipsThe Esther A. & Joseph Klingenstein Fund, in partnership with the Simons Foundation, has announced the opening of its 2018 competition for research fellowships in the neurosciences. Previously known as the Klingenstein Fellowship Awards in the Neurosciences, this year's awards are the second from this joint initiative. The awards are presented to highly promising early-career scientists. At a critical juncture in young investigators' careers when funding can be a challenge, the awards are intended to promote higher-risk, and potentially higher-reward, projects. Payable over three years, the $225,000 award may be used for salary support, research assistants, equipment, or any other purpose that promotes the scientific activities of the fellow. To be eligible, investigators must hold a PhD and/or MD degree and have completed all their research training, including postdoctoral training. In addition, the applicant must be an independent investigator within four years (between July 1, 2014, and July 1, 2018) of receiving his/her first tenure-track appointment at a university or medical institution. Spencer Foundation Invites Proposals for Education Research ProjectsEstablished in 1962, the Spencer Foundation is dedicated to the belief that research is necessary to the improvement of education. To that end, the foundation supports high-quality investigations of education through its research programs and the strengthening and renewing of the educational research community through its fellowship and training programs and related activities. Through its Small Research Grants Program, the foundation is accepting research proposals for education research projects. In keeping with the foundation's mission, the program aims to fund academic work that will contribute to the improvement of education, broadly conceived. Examples of previously funded projects include an experimental study of how college students use visual representations in solving math problems; a study exploring the process of racial and rural identity formation among African-American high-school students who attend de facto segregated schools in the rural South; and a mixed-methods study focused on the different types of knowledge novice and experienced teachers draw on in teaching reading comprehension. The program awards grants of up to $50,000. To be eligible, principal investigators and co-PIs must have an earned doctorate in an academic discipline or professional field, or appropriate experience in an education research-related profession. Hospice and Palliative Nurses Foundation Accepting Applications for Certification Research GrantsThe Hospice and Palliative Nurses Foundation, the charitable arm of the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association, is accepting applications for its Certification Research Grant program. The HPNF Certification Research Grant is intended to provide investigators with resources to conduct exploratory, pilot, or feasibility studies that will lead to larger-scale projects linking certification with patient outcomes. Health and Aging Policy Fellows Program Accepting ApplicationsHealth and Aging Policy is inviting applications for 2018-2019 fellowships, a year-long program designed to provide healthcare professionals with the experience and skills necessary to make a positive contribution to the development and implementation of health policies that affect older Americans. The program offers fellows the opportunity to participate in a residential track or a nonresidential track. The residential track allows fellows to participate in the policymaking process on either the Federal or state level as legislative assistants in Congress, professional staff members in executive branch agencies, or policy organizations. Core program components focused on career development and professional enrichment are provided for fellows in both tracks. Jane Coffin Childs Memorial Fund Invites Applications for Cancer Research FellowshipsThe Jane Coffin Childs Memorial Fund for Medical Research was established in 1937 for the purpose of supporting research into the causes and treatment of cancer. The fund has taken a broad approach to the study of cell growth and development, emphasizing the study of the basic biology and chemistry of the underlying processes, and increasingly has focused its resources on the funding of three-year postdoctoral fellowships, supporting fellows selected by its board of scientific advisers from among the best young scientists at what is often a critical stage in their careers. As a result, there have been more than sixteen hundred Jane Coffin Childs fellows doing basic cancer-related research in laboratories in North America, Europe, Japan, and Australia. To advance its mission, the JCC Fund is accepting applications for its fellowship program. The fund supports between twenty-five and thirty new three-year cancer research fellowships every year.
