Before you f ly please check the center of gravi ty, i t should balance anywhere between 50-60mm from the leading edge of the wing next to the fuselage. For in i t ia l f l ights keep i t c loser to the 50mm mark as th is wi l l make i t more doci le. Adjust the center of gravi ty by moving the battery forward or af t in the battery compartment.

Suggested Control Throws:

First th ing is to double check that the center of gravi ty is correct and also check that the controls are working in the correct d i rect ion. When you move your ai leron control st ick to the r ight the r ight a i leron should go up and the lef t one down. When you move the st ick lef t the lef t a i leron should go up and the r ight one down. When you move your elevator control st ick down the elevator should go up and when you move the st ick up the eleva-tor should go down. The rudder control is straightforward, lef t rudder st ick is lef t rudder and r ight st ick is r ight rudder.

Wait for a day with l ight winds and f ind a large grass area clear of t rees, wires , away from roads and bui ld ings and free of spectators . A helper is good idea to help you launch the Floater Jet for the f i rst t ime . Switch on your t ransmit ter wi th the throt t le c losed and connect the f l ight bat tery, check the controls are working correct ly and in the r ight d i rect ion as above and that al l control surfaces are neutral . I t is a lways good at th is point to do a range check of your equipment to check that everything works as i t should do. Get your helper to hold your model at about waist height whi le you walk away working the f ly ing controls. I t is good to check the motor as wel l when you are a distance away from the model to check that i t does not interfere wi th the radio s ignal and give you gl i tching servos. Please make sure you warn your helper before doing this so that they keep themselves wel l away from the rotat ing propel ler .

Once sat isf ied everything is working as i t should you are now ready to do some test g l id ing. Get you helper to hold your model just above head height and facing into wind, they need to give the model a f i rm throw with the nose sl ight ly down, do not have the motor running for th is exercise. The gl ide should be long and f lat wi th no tendency to turn. I f i t d ives s l ight ly then apply a smal l amount of up t r im on the transmit ter and try again. I f i t ra ises i ts nose and gent ly stal ls then you need to apply a smal l amount of down tr im. Keep doing these test g l ides unt i l you get a long f lat g l ide. I f the model has a tendency to turn lef t or r ight then apply ei ther some ai leron tr im or rudder t r im in the opposi te direct ion to the turn. Once the model is t r immed nicely do some pract ice launches and try doing a gent le S turn into wind whi le i t is g l id ing just to get used to the controls.

Once happy with the test g l id ing you should now be ready for some gent le f ly ing wi th power. Once again get your helper to hold the model just above head height and into wind and when you are ready apply some power, do not apply fu l l power as i t is not needed, hal f or just over is more than suff ic ient . When you are ready ask your helper to launch the model, i f t r immed correct ly i t should c l imb away nice and gent ly wi th no tendency to turn. I f i t does try to turn use the ai lerons to keep the wings level and the model f ly ing straight into the wind, the c l imb should be gent le, do not c l imb too steeply or i t may stal l and spin or spiral into the ground. Once up to a safe height and wel l up wind throt t le back sl ight ly unt i l i t s tops c l imbing but not so much that i t star ts coming down. At th is point check the tr im of the model, let go of the ai leron and elevator st ick and watch the model, any tendency to turn or c l imb or dive then adjust the t r ims as necessary. The elevator should be f ine i f you did the test g l id ing correct ly, the model wi l l c l imb under power, th is is normal and when you throt t le back in should go into the long f lat g l ide that you tr immed for. Between quarter and mid throt t le somewhere i t should maintain i ts height and f ly level , you may need to keep adjust ing the throt t le to maintain level f l ight depending on the weather condi t ions.

Now you are at a safe height, wel l upwind and nicely t r immed you can pract ice some gent le turns. Using just the ai lerons try turning lef t or r ight , move the st ick a smal l amount and watch the model as i t banks, once you have the desired amount of bank (don' t overdo this, keep i t gent le) move the st ick back almost to neutral and the model wi l l set t le into a gent le turn, you may need to apply a smal l amount of up elevator as i t turns, avoid too much eleva-tor as you could end up stal l ing.Whi le you are pract ic ing these turns t ry and keep the model upwind of yoursel f , i f i t ends up downwind things can go wrong very quickly and you wi l l s tar t moving the controls in the wrong direct ion. Remember when the model is coming towards you the ai lerons appear to work back to f ront ie: i f you move the st ick lef t as the model is f ly ing towards you i t wi l l go to your r ight and i f you move the st ick r ight the model wi l l go to your lef t . This problem is only overcome with pract ise, one way that helps is that i f the model is f ly ing towards you and the lef t wing as you are looking at i t drops then push the st ick to the lef t and vice versa.

At th is point should should be f ly ing gent le turns lef t and r ight upwind and before the battery goes f lat we need to th ink about landing. A good wel l p lanned circui t should end up with the model in the r ight p lace to execute a reasonably good landing. You can do a lef t or r ighthand circui t , whichever you are more comfortable wi th. For the purpose of th is exercise we wi l l do a lef thand circui t . At a safe height f ly the model of f to your lef t st i l l wel l upwind then turn the model lef t and head downwind, reduce the power at th is point to start gent ly loosing height and f ly down the lef thand side of your landing area. Al low i t to come past yoursel f a l i t t le and just downwind of you then do a 90° lef thand turn towards the approach path of your landing area. I f you are bi t h igh at th is point reduce power a bi t more, i f you think you are a bi t low gent ly apply some power to stop the descent. When approaching the center l ine of your landing area do another 90° turn to the lef t and l ine up into wind on your landing area. Now reduce power completely and al low the model to gl ide as t r immed keeping the wings level wi th the ai lerons. I f the model is t r immed correct ly and you keep the wings level i t wi l l just land i tsel f , when you have a bi t more exper ience you can apply a smal l amount of up eleva-tor when i t is just above the ground to raise the nose and f lare to a gent le landing.

Ok, so hopeful ly you have had a successful f l ight but th ings do not always go as planned when you are learning. I f you are f ly ing and things start to go wrong the f i rst th ing to do is not panic! ! Close the throt t le immediately you loose control , completely let go of the control st icks and let them go to neutral , i f the model is t r immed correct ly i t wi l l s lowly recover i tsel f into a gent le gl ide. Once in the gl ide gent ly turn i t into wind and keep the wings level and al low i t to land. Recompose yoursel f and think about what went wrong and i f the model is st i l l in once piece have another go. The worst s i tuat ion is a spiral d ive, in a spiral d ive the model looses height very quickly and unless recovery is done correct ly the model wi l l end up crashing. I f a spiral d ive develops then once again the f i rst th ing to do is to c lose the throt t le completely, determine very quickly whether i t is a lef t or r ighthand spiral , apply opposi te ai leron unt i l the wings are level then apply elevator to pul l out of the dive. Whatever you do, do not put in up elevator when the model is in the spiral as th is wi l l only exaggerate the problem and you wi l l crash even quicker.

As ment ioned at the start i t is a lways best to enl ist the help of an exper ienced model pi lot who can stand next to you whi le you are f ly ing to give help and advice and can grab the controls i f th ings go wrong. There are plenty of model f ly ing c lubs and societ ies around with members who are always wi l l ing to help wi th newcomers so please search you area before going i t a lone.

Have fun and enjoy flying your H-King Floater Jet.
