1. Introduction The GKAD1 is a trip circuit supervision relay, and is provided the following features:

- Trip circuit supervision in both closed and open positions of circuit breaker

- Detection and alarm of trip circuit supply failure and of circuit breaker tripping mechanism failure

- Single-phase or three-phase types available

- Compact size design

- Flush mounting

2. Application and Function 2.1 Application

The GKAD1 is used for monitoring of the circuit breaker tripping circuit. The GKAD1 issues an alarm if the GKAD1 detects trip circuit supply failure or circuit breaker tripping mechanism failure.

The GKAD1 has two models as shown in Table 2.1.

Table 2.1 GKAD1 Models

Model Configuration

GKAD1-12 Single-phase type

GKAD1-22 Three-phase type

2.2 Function

The GKAD1 monitors the circuit breaker tripping control, and Figure 2.1 shows a typical scheme. When the trip circuit is complete, a small current flows in photo-couplers PC1 and/or PC2, the circuit breaker auxiliary contacts and the trip coil. This current flows for both the breaker open and closed conditions.

Figure 2.1 Trip Circuit Supervision Scheme (1)

If the trip circuit supply is lost or if a connection becomes open circuit then the GKAD1 issues a trip circuit fail alarm and operates the target indicator. As for the sensitivity, the detection voltage and detection current are 40V or less and 1.5mA or less.

Figure 2.2 shows the special application of GKAD1 relay. This scheme ensures that all trip circuit wiring (tripping route) from the trip contact to the trip coil is supervised in either the breaker closed or open condition. At CB closed condition, the monitoring current flows in photo-coupler PC1. On the other hand, at CB open condition, the monitoring current flows in photo-couplers PC1 and PC2 via tripping cable and CB auxiliary contact 52b. Under both CB conditions, if tripping route/trip coil is disconnected, the monitoring current is interrupted and both PC1 and PC2 are off and the GKAD1 issues alarm.

2.3 Connections

The GKAD1 auxiliary supply input has a nominal 110/125Vdc rating or 220/250Vdc rating.

The typical application and connection diagrams are shown in Figures 2.3 and 2.4. Figure 2.3 shows a single-phase application for GKAD1-12 and Figure 2.4 shows a three-phase application for GKAD1-22.

The two resistors on the PC1, PC3 and PC5 photo coupler circuits are added as shown in Figure 2.3 and 2.4 below in consideration of the fail-safe of relay failure. The resistors can function to prevent unwanted tripping due to relay internal circuit failure under CB closed condition.

CAUTION Do not connect anything to 5th-12th terminals in Figure 2.3. These are reserved in GKAD1-12.

4. Installation 4.1 Receipt of Relays

On receiving the GKAD1 relays, carry out the acceptance inspection immediately. In particular, check for damage during transportation, and if any is found, contact the vendor.

Always store the unit in a clean, dry environment.

4.2 Mounting

Refer to Appendix A for details of mechanical fixings.

4.3 Electrostatic Discharge

CAUTION

The printed circuit board (PCB) within the GKAD1 relay is not intended to be a removable module. Do not remove the PCB from the unit case, since electronic components on the PCB are very sensitive to electrostatic discharge. If it is absolutely essential to take the PCB out of the case, do not touch the electronic components and terminals with your bare hands. Additionally, always put the PCB in a conductive anti-static bag when storing it.

4.4 Handling Precautions

A person's normal movements can easily generate electrostatic potential of several thousand volts. Discharge of these voltages into semiconductor devices when handling electronic circuits can cause serious damage, which often may not be immediately apparent but the reliability of the circuit will have been reduced.

The electronic circuits are completely safe from electrostatic discharge when housed in the case. Do not expose them to risk of damage by removing the PCB unnecessarily.

The unit incorporates the highest practicable protection for its semiconductor devices. However, if it becomes necessary to remove the PCB, precautions should be taken to preserve the high reliability and long life for which the equipment has been designed and manufactured.

CAUTION

• Before removing the PCB, ensure that you are at the same electrostatic potential as the equipment by touching the case.

• Handle only the edges of the PCB. Avoid touching the electronic components, PCB surface or connectors.

• Do not pass the PCB to another person without first ensuring you are both at the same electrostatic potential. Shaking hands achieves equipotential.

• Place the PCB on an anti-static surface, or on a conducting surface which is at the same potential as yourself.

• Do not place the PCB in a polystyrene tray.

It is strongly recommended that detailed investigations on electronic circuitry should be carried out in a Special Handling Area such as described in the IEC 60747.

5. Commissioning and Maintenance General

Test personnel must be familiar with general relay testing practices and safety precautions to avoid personal injuries or equipment damage.

5.2 Precautions

CAUTION

• Ensure that the auxiliary supply connections are properly fixed to their terminals. • Before turning on the power, check that the polarity and voltage of the power supply are

correct.

• Turn off the auxiliary supply before checking the interior of the relay.

• While the power is on, do not mount/dismount the PCB.

Failure to observe any of the precautions above may cause damage or malfunction of the relay. Refer to section 4.4 for information on handling precautions.

5.3 Preparation

Test equipment The following test equipment is required for the commissioning tests.

• DC power supply.

• Calibrated voltmeter.

Visual inspection After unpacking the product, check for any damage to the case. If there is any damage, the internal module might also have been affected. Contact the vendor.

Unit ratings Check that the items described on the nameplate on the front of the unit conform to the user’s specification. The items are: relay type and model, and auxiliary DC supply voltage rating.

5.4 Storage

The spare relay should be stored in a dry and clean room. Based on IEC Standard 60255-0 the storage temperature should be −25°C to +70°C, but the temperature of 0°C to +40°C is recommended for long-term storage.
