Textbook Inventory

The direct quote from the contracting team…

“Des Moines Public School buildings were the most organized we have seen to date. Buildings did an excellent job in setup and staging of books which made our work extremely efficient.”

In total the contracting team inventoried 55 buildings in 11 days, bar coding an estimated 160,000 textbooks. The success of this grand project is testament to all of your hard work.

Build teacher knowledge and effective use of the mathematical practice standards and upgrade our current materials to provide a foundation for instruction.

Establish a “Close Reading Task Force” to study the practice and provide lesson examples and protocols using the Journeys materials.

Provide support documents and materials to classroom teachers regarding the effective integration of literacy within Science, Social Studies and Health.

Data-Driven Decision-Making

Support the creation of Common Formative Assessments at the Data Team level by providing passages, example questions, and collaborative opportunities.

Determine a systemic approach to RTI that includes identifying students in need of additional support and define a common treatment protocol for students in need of additional support.

I can identify the 5 senses and the associated body part. I can use my 5 senses to make observations of an object or situation.

I can use tools such as rulers, and magnifiers to extend my senses and my abilities to gather information.

The students put their hands into the bags and draw what they think are in the bags. Create a sheet with 12 boxes for recording drawings. Sound Center Sound Matching- Use dark colored film canisters and put objects into them. On the bottoms of the canisters put colored dots with letters on them. Make two full sets so that a group of 4 could play in teams of two. The canisters are in pairs with matching objects inside and matching letters on the bottom. The children take turns choosing one container and then shaking the rest to find the one that matches. Then their partner takes a turn. They confirm the match via the letters on the bottom. Guess that Sound – Use opaque containers to make “mystery containers”. Each container contains an object that is unknown to the students. The students shake and then draw a picture of what they think is in the container. Smell/Taste Center What’s That Smell??- Make up containers Styrofoam cups covered with aluminum foil with different smells. Poke holes in the top of the foil so students can smell but not see the contents. (Be aware of any allergies that may be present in your class). Have enough sets for each group of students to share. We do this as a whole class activity - guessing smells, etc. My Jelly-Belly tastes like. . . - Using jelly-belly beans; have the students hold their nose and chew on a jelly bean. You have a sugar sensation but no taste. After they chew for about 20 seconds I tell them to let go of their nose and they get a blast of flavor. Discuss the role of our nose with taste.

Taste, touch, smell, sight, hear, sense, observe, predict, nose, eyes, ears, tongue, skin

DISTRICT STANDARDS-BASED

ASSESSMENTS

Page 64: Instructional Coaches: 2013-2014 CIA Kick-Off August 9 th, 2013

Fall 2013 Assessment work

• We want to ensure that our assessments are of the highest quality possible.

• We are working to ensure aligned with the Iowa Common Core Standards.

• Are an accurate predictor of success on the Iowa Assessment and other external measures.

Page 65: Instructional Coaches: 2013-2014 CIA Kick-Off August 9 th, 2013

How are we ensuring quality…

Math & Literacy:

• Statistical analysis of student responses used to gauge questions’ reliability and level of difficulty on a 5 point scale.

• Alignment with standards – all standards are represented on the assessments.

• Revisions completed with teams of coaches and teachers.

• Literacy revision team used SRI and Iowa Assessments to calibrate overall difficulty and made adjustments as such.

• Math assessments posted on website in draft form to allow all stakeholders to provide feedback and reduce the number of errors before the assessment is available on data director.

Page 66: Instructional Coaches: 2013-2014 CIA Kick-Off August 9 th, 2013

Timeline for Assessments: Math

• All Unit One Assessments are posted on Data Director.

• Drafts of the following units assessments are/will be posted on the website.

• When the assessments are complete - they will be moved to Data Director and available for print.

Page 71: Instructional Coaches: 2013-2014 CIA Kick-Off August 9 th, 2013

What we need from building leaders…

• Ensure all staff members register for the appropriate PLC by Sept. 3

• Communicate the expectation for attendance and address recurring attendance issues

• Attend your designated PLC

• Ensure teachers know the purpose of the meetings and the role of the facilitator

KITEKNOWLEDGE FOR INTEGRATING

TECHNOLOGY IN EDUCATION

Page 76: Instructional Coaches: 2013-2014 CIA Kick-Off August 9 th, 2013

What is the KITE project?

• The KITE project is designed to develop technology skills in our teaching force.

• Uses “gamification” and incentives as a way to increase staff interest and completion.

• Provides a formalized and consistent training platform to deliver technology education straight from the technology department to the teacher.

Page 77: Instructional Coaches: 2013-2014 CIA Kick-Off August 9 th, 2013

Why do we need the KITE project?

• Last year’s Customer Service Desk (CSD, x8161) data from only the 1st semester:

• 2,239 calls regarding passwords/logging in

• 922 calls regarding printers/copiers

• 464 calls regarding email

• 361 calls regarding AV equipment

• 2,678 calls that ended with reimaging

• 610 calls regarding internet connectivity (wireless)

Page 78: Instructional Coaches: 2013-2014 CIA Kick-Off August 9 th, 2013

So what is the solution?

• Flight School: Eleven basic technology concepts that every employee needs to function effectively within DMPS.

• This module is designed with the new teacher in mind, but will be beneficial for everyone in the district.

• Hardware introduction, passwords & logins, email, printing, how to get help

Page 79: Instructional Coaches: 2013-2014 CIA Kick-Off August 9 th, 2013

What’s next?

• The KITE projects ultimate goal is to infuse technology throughout instruction to allow for optimal use of teacher time while creating engaging and effective instruction.

• The CUTEE project from last year is still operational.

• As teachers progress through the levels of the KITE project, they will be exposed to various technologies that they currently have access to.

• Teachers will be able to determine their own learning path to maximize engagement.
