• Decide: Are students going to have a hard copy of the article, or are they going to annotate online?

Procedure
• Teacher will read article out loud• Front load any vocabulary, if necessary• Teacher model “Rule-Based Summarizing” procedure
by deleting trivial details and redundant material using the “think-aloud” strategy for first section
• Teacher will model deleting or writing topic sentence for first section
• Partners – SW practice following the “Rule-Based Summarizing” procedure for second section of article
• Small Group – SW share their steps with their teammates and discuss any discrepancies or differences
• Whole Group – TW check for understanding• Individual – SW practice following the “Rule-Based
Summarizing” procedure for third section of article• Shoulder Partner – SW share what they deleted and
their topic sentence

• SW write summary of entire article in reading notebook (option: write summary in EverNote or other iPad app), using topic sentences from each section
• SW practice reading summary out loud (whisper reading)
• Shoulder Partners – SW read summaries out loud to partner
• Partners - SW video record each other reading their summaries using iPads (or any other recording device)
