What Are Control Experiments?

An experiment to verify the results of another experiment using the same conditions except for one factor or variable

An experiment separated from the main experiment where the independent variable being tested cannot influence the results.

Simply remove the independent variable entirely or replace it with a neutral independent variable.

Notes SPI 0807.Inq.1 (Variables and Controls)

Also called control groups

Example: A student conducts an experiment to determine whichtype of ballpoint pen will last the longest before running out of ink. Experimental Group Uses 3 types of ink ballpoint pens in a series of experiments

(Blue ink pen, Black ink pen, red ink pen)

SPI 0807.Inq.1Variables and ControlsNotes

The independent variable is…the color of the ink in the pens

A dependent variable is…

Describe a control experiment for this example:

How long the ink lasts

HINT: Just eliminate the effect of the independent variable

Control Experiment: Instead of a ballpoint pen, repeat theexperiment using some kind of non-ballpoint pen (like a Sharpie for example)

Experimental group All the details of the series of experiments using the 3types of ballpoint pens

Control group All the details of the 3 non-ballpoint pens

Example: A scientist is conducting an experiment to test how sunlight affects plant growth. She places one corn plant 1 meter away from a sunlamp. She places one corn plant 2 meters away from a sunlamp. She places one corn plant 3 meters away from a sunlamp.

Notes SPI 0807.Inq.1 (Variables and Controls)

The independent variable is…the distance from the sunlamp

A dependent variable is…

Describe a control experiment for this example:

the plant growth

HINT: Just eliminate the effect of the independent variable

Control Experiment: Place a corn plant in a dark room with no sunlight and observe what happens.

Example: A student conducted an experiment to determine if energy drinks can help you run faster.

Here is the experimental group1st trial: Day 01-Run 30m after drinking Monster energy drink2nd trial: Day 02-Run 30m after drinking Red Bull energy drink3rd trial: Day 03-Run 30m after drinking Rock Star energy drink

Notes SPI 0807.Inq.1 (Variables and Controls)

The independent variable is…the type of energy drink

A dependent variable is…

Describe a control experiment for this example:

How fast they run

HINT: Just eliminate the effect of the independent variable

Control Experiment: Have them run without consuming anyenergy drink. You could give them a glass of water instead, orgive them nothing at all.
