• Watercolor paper • Watercolors – shades of blue and purple, black • Salt – table salt and or rock/sea salt • Paintbrushes • Paint palette for mixing paints • Paper Towels • Water NOTE: Sample shown used Cotman watercolor paints on Strathmore watercolor paper. 1. Add a wash of clean water to the surface of the watercolor paper. 2. Add drops of watercolor in blues and purples. The paint will start to spread out. Layer colors for interest. 3. If the color is too intense in an area, use a paper towel to blot and “lift” color off. Continue painting. INSTRUCTIONS MATERIALS & TOOLS WATERCOLOR PAINTING WITH SALT 4. While the paper and paints are still wet, loosely sprinkle some salt on top. The salt will start to interact with the paint. Using table salt or rock/ sea salt will give you different effects. Avoid making large clumps of salt. Let dry. 6. Use the artwork for different projects: Frame it as is. Add wording on top. Cut into tags. Use for cardmaking. Lots of different uses for these backgrounds. 4a. Sample with rock salt sprinkled on. 5. Once the artwork is dry, brush off any excess salt crystals that didn’t melt.
