LET’S BEGIN:Before operating your Crane CamsPowermax Performance Power Tuner:• Read this entire instruction booklet carefully. The step-

by-step instructions will make using your PowermaxPower Tuner much easier. The Powermax Power Tunerwill perform many steps automatically.

• Be sure the vehicle's battery is fully charged before usingthe Powermax Power Tuner. Do not attempt to reprogramyour computer with a low charged battery or while con-nected to a battery charger.

• Turn off all electrical systems: Lights, radio, air condition-ing, fan, CD/DVD players, power-amplifiers, cellularphones, etc.

• Set the parking brake. This turns the Daytime RunningLights (DRL) off. If left on, this may interfere with pro-gramming.

• Disable the OnStar feature if equipped.

• Disable all necessary equipment by removing the appro-

priate fuses as described on pages 2 through 5.

• Pre-determine your choices before starting your pro-gramming session (measure tire diameter and determinegear ratio if changing from stock).

Step 1: Fuse RemovalThe first step in the programming process requires theremoval of certain fuses. Some fuses govern special equip-ment options and will interfere with the programmingprocess. (This does not mean that you cannot use theseoptions with the Crane Power Tuner; it simply means thatthese options must be disabled during the programmingprocess, only!). All fuses must be re-inserted after the pro-gramming process is complete. The location of the fuses, for the GM applications, are shown below.

The interior fuse panel is located inside the door on the endof the dashboard as shown above in the picture on the left. The underhood (exterior) fuse panel is located under thehood adjacent the driver's side fender as shown in theabove picture on the right.

As stated previously, you will have to disable the SpecialEquipment Option of the vehicle. To do so we have includ-ed the schematic diagrams of the fuse boxes below.

Whether your vehicle is equipped withthese options or not, you must pullthese fuses.1996-2000 GM Models equipped with 4.3/5.0/5.7/7.4VORTEC engines: (interior fuse removal, see Figure 3)

Locate the fuse panel in the interior (inside the door on thedriver's end of the dash) and remove the cover.(See Figure 1)

Step #2: Remove the following fuses: #4, #17, and #19(interior fuse panel diagram, See Figure 3).

11. Your first custom tuning choice is the speed limiter. To leave the speed limiter at stock, move the cursorto Stock and press Y. To increase the limiter, movethe cursor to 130 MPH or unlimited and press Y.Make sure your tires have the appropriate speedrating before increasing the speed limiter.

12. To adjust yourspeedometer for achange in tire diameteror rear axle ratio pressY, if not, press N andskip to step 15.

13. If the vehicle gear ratio has been changed fromstock, scroll the cursor to the correct value andpress Y. Changing the tuner axle ratio does notautomatically changethe gears in the vehicleaxle. Note: If you have3.08 gears, telling thetuner it has 3.73 doesnot make the gears3.73.

14. To correct the speedometer for under or oversizedtires, measure the height of the tire (from the pave-ment to the top of the tire) and round that value tothe nearest .25". Scroll the cursor through the tiresize choices and select the size by pressing Y.

15. To adjust the fueloctane level, scrollthrough the choicesand select by pressingY.

16. To adjust timing, a shift of the spark curve up ordown by ten percent can be selected. Use the 0%,or no change at first and work your way towardsplus or minus ten percent. A minus 10 percent shiftcan help overcome engine ping from poor qualitygasoline. If a low restriction cat back system hasbeen installed, a plus-10-percent-in-timing adjuste-ment can be beneficial.Use caution whenadjusting timing, overadvance can cause det-onation and enginedamage.

17. Engine tuning tailors the torque management, spark, and fuel to a specific camshaft application.Stock cams can use either the original stock or theHi-Performance mode selection. Crane Truck-Powercams and other Crane cams with similar valve tim-ing events, can use cam performance selections 1through 3. Do not attempt to use camshaft perfor-mance level settings 1 through 3 with a stock camas unintended results may occur including enginedamage. Scroll the cursor to the appropriate enginetune selection and press Y.

For more information see page 12.

18. Idle speed can be adjusted in 50 RPM steps to amaximum of 300 RPM over stock for use with per-formance camshafts. This allows you toselect the idle charac-teristics that best suityour combination.Scroll the cursor to theRPM selection andpress Y.

19. Increased injector size is used for applications suchas supercharging where large increases in airflowrequire higher flow injectors. Use this feature only ifthe injector flow rate has changed from stock. If 24pound/hour injectors have been replaced with 32pound/hour, select aninjector size increase of30%. If the injectorshave not been changed, select 0%. Scroll thecursor to the correctflow rate increase andpress Y.

20. Enhanced transmissionshifting modifies partthrottle shift point andtorque converter lockup. Select stock or per-formance and press Y.

21. Enhanced transmissionfirmness allows for stock orperformance settings.Select stock or perfor-mance and press Y.

22. This is the final step before the PowerMax tunersession is finished. To agree with all of your choic-es, press the Y button. If you are unsure, press theN button to restart the selection process. Afterpressing Y, the tuner will start to upload the newdata. When the PowerMax Power Tuner is transfer-ring data, DO NOT DISTURB the tuner or thecable. You will see the prompt window scrolling asthe tuner updates the PCM. Once the tuner has fin-ished updating your PCM, you will hear the fuelpump cycle and the message to remove the tunerwill appear. Turn the key to OFF, and remove thecable from the OBDII link connector.

23. Replace any disconnected or removed fuses.Your vehicle is now ready to be started with thenew enhanced tuning.

Note: After programming, many vehicles with "driveby wire" throttle control will have the DTC indi-cator lit on the dashboard and an associatedtrouble code will be set in the computer. This isnot uncommon, nor is it a problem. Simplyplug the tuner into the OBDII port (no fusesneed to be removed at this time). Scroll tothe screen that displays "Choose, Tune car,Get DTC codes" and select DTC codes. Thenext screen will display the code number and"Clear DTC". Select "Clear DTC" and press"Y". Once the code has been cleared, thevehicle is ready to drive.

Diagnostic trouble codes are listed in the back of theseinstructions. Complete information on DTC's can be foundin the factory service manual.

What to do BEFORE you take yourvehicle in for service. At some point, you may have to take your vehicle to amechanic or a dealership for service. You must remove thePowermax Power Tuner programming and restore your vehi-cle to its stock settings.

Failure to program the vehicle back to stock can result in

unnecessary and costly repairs not covered by CraneCams, Inc. Before you have any work done on the vehi-cle make sure the Powermax Performance Power Tunercustom tuning is removed from your vehicle's comput-er. If you have failed to return the vehicle back to its stockcondition and the vehicle computer is reflashed, due toupdates, your PowerMax Power Tuner may not work cor-rectly, which is not covered by the Crane Cams, Inc. war-ranty.

Using The Crane PowerMax PowerTuner With Crane Truck-Power CamsThe true benefit of the Powermax Performance PowerTuner is the ability to allow the use of various Crane Cams"Truck-Power" camshafts in your vehicle. These camshaftpart #s are listed below along with their relative "CamPerformance Level" (ex: Cam Perf 1; Cam Perf 2; or CamPerf 3). These "performance levels" are the tuning para-meters necessary to make the vehicle drive properly withthe selected camshaft. Simply select the camshaft part #you have purchased for your vehicle and use the related"Cam Perf #" for your camshaft.

Cams that are listed as "Cam Perf 1" are cams that havehigh idle vacuum and are designed to enhance low-endand mid-range performance. They are ideal for heavy dutytowing and general driving.

Cams that are listed as "Cam Perf 2" are designed for

mid-range power and torque improvements with little to noloss in stock low-end power. They can be used for light tomedium towing as long as the tire size and rear axle ratioare appropriate.

Cams that are listed as "Cam Perf 3" are designed as"Sport-Truck" cams. This usage does not anticipate heavytowing. These cams are designed to maximize mid rangeand top end power with only a slight, but acceptable lossof low-end torque.

NOTE: Cams that are listed as "Cam Perf 2" and"Cam Perf 3" have been designed to be usednaturally aspirated or with superchargers pro-viding a maximum boost of 6 PSI.. Check fuelinjector flow rate to assure adequate fuel sup-ply with a supercharger. Your Crane CamsPowermax Performance Power Tuner is capa-ble off controlling higher flow fuel injectors!
