The geospatial technology is an integrated technique
includes remote sensing, Geographical Information
Systems (GIS), Global Positioning Systems (GPS), which
provides a powerful mapping and analyzing tools for
planning and management of natural resources and human
societies. The application of the geospatial technology is
increasing day by day in various sectors. This 21 days
summer/winter school will focus on enhancing the
knowledge and skills of the participants through basic
geospatial knowledge, skill development through expert’s
lectures and practical exercises through hands on training
using open source software. The participants from different
discipline such as geology, geography, environmental
science, disaster management, oceanography, forestry,
agricultural sciences and civil engineering from Colleges/
Universities/Other research institutes will be trained.
Introduction
The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) was established in
1936 as the Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work.
In 1944, it was renamed as the Tata Institute of Social
Sciences. The year 1964 was an important landmark in the
history of the Institute, when it was declared Deemed to be a
University under Section 3 of the University Grants
Commission Act (UGC), 1956. The TISS is one of the leading
institute/universities in the country, reaccredited with CGPA of
3.89 and having ‘A’ Grade by NAAC. The institute has 37
Centres under 18 Schools and 7 Independent Centres.
About TISS
Academicians and Researchers from colleges/universities/
other research institutes, and state/central Government
officials have basic knowledge in geospatial technology and
wish to develop their skills. The participants from Geology,
Geography, Environmental Science, Disaster Management,
Oceanography, forestry/ agricultural sciences and Civil
Engineering background will be preferred to apply.
Eligibility Criteria
The objectives of the training program is to bring the
participants to understand the various components of
Geospatial technology and its applications in natural
resource mapping, and development of policy and planning
with respect to natural resource. The course will be
delivered in the following ways.
First week will be covered basic and fundamental
concepts of geospatial technology along with basic tools
training using open source software.
Second week will focus on application and practical
aspects of geospatial technology through GIS database
generation.
The third week will be completely focused on application
of geospatial technology using open source software
and the participants will be carried out a small project on
their area of interest or given topic.
Objectives and Course content
Eligible and interested candidates are requested to send their
duly filled application form as given with this brochure and
forward the completed application through proper channel to

Intimation to the selected participants: 24th Feb 2017
Important Dates
The Centre for Geoinformatics was established with an aim of
performing advanced research in various application fields of
Remote Sensing, Geographical Information Systems (GIS),
and Global Positioning Systems (GPS). The broad vision of
Centre for Geoinformatics is development, planning and
implementation in Science & Technology and social science
perspectives through global level teaching, individual and
collaborative researches, and training programmes. Currently,
the centre is associated with Jamsetji Tata School of Disaster
Studies (JTSDS). The centre has well equipped GIS laboratory
facilities with computers, digital image processing and GIS
softwares, satellite images, topo maps and GPS etc. During
last 9 years, the Centre has providing the research and
teaching facilities in the field of Geoinformatics applications in
natural resource mapping, disaster management, development
studies, planning and policy, and social science aspects etc.
The Centre is involving in the research projects funded by
international and national level funding agencies. The Centre is
offering seven M.A./M.Sc. courses and three M.Phil./Ph.D.
courses and one international online course in the field of
remote sensing and GIS, related to disaster studies. The
centre have organized two days workshops, one week and two
weeks training programmes in the field of geospatial
