The Music Program at BRAA will provide students with an appreciation and deep-ened commitment to music. Our educational approach will be to provide balance be-tween performance (ensemble/solo), technical skill, theory and music history. In the teaching of theory and music history students will receive a pedagogical framework that is similar to the Royal Conservatory of Music curriculum.

In its initial stages, our Grade 9 program will focus on developing a disciplined practice schedule for skilled performers who already have extensive training on an instrument of choice. In addition, students who are relatively new to instrumental music will be aided in selecting and developing a skill set for a chosen instrument. Our aim would be to have enough students to develop a strong ensemble core. We are committed through a partnership with Symphony on the Bay to provide youth opportunities to students in ensemble orchestras in the event that we are not able to provide ensemble opportunities in our initial stages. We know that large ensembles nurture the talents of our musicians.

As our program grows, students in the Instrumental Music Program will be given opportunities to take credit courses in Repertoire, Strings, Brass, Guitar, Stage Band, and Composition, depending on student interest.

Our aim is that through our program students will develop an aptitude in instru-mental music that will enhance their overall education. Master class artists in the classroom and guest workshops will provide our students with enriching opportu-nities to develop their post-secondary audition techniques. Along the way, BRAA is committed to finding performance opportunities for our music students in commu-nity and professional venues in the Halton region.

Instrumental Music

The Vocal Music Program at BRAA will provide students with an appreciation and commitment to voice. Our educational approach will be to provide balance between performance (ensemble/solo), technical skill, theory and music history. In the teach-ing of theory and music history students will receive a pedagogical framework that is similar to the Royal Conservatory of Music curriculum.

In its initial stages, the Grade 9 Vocal Music Program will focus on student profi-ciency in voice training, and accommodating those students at various performance levels. As stated in the Ministry curriculum, Creation, Theory and Analysis will frame the program structure. Students will gain experience through experimenting with breathing, diction, range, projection, intonation, ear training and sight-singing. The-ory will include instruction in symbols, concepts and conventions used in vocal mu-sic. Students are encouraged to audition for community performance opportunities. Master class artists in the classroom and guest workshops will provide our students with enriching opportunities to develop their post-secondary audition techniques.

As our program grows, students of the BRAA Vocal Music Program will be given opportunities to intensify their focused study through senior credits in Vocal Jazz and Music Theatre courses depending on student interest. We encourage Vocal Music students to take Grade 9 and 10 Dramatic Arts to develop parallel acting, voice and movement skills to support their study of vocal music.

Our aim is that many of our creative students will choose to deeper their under-standing of the arts through a focus on music. Students will be equipped with strong techniques in voice, voice control, breathing, confidence, gesture, non-verbal commu-nication and movement that will enhance their abilities in other art forms. At BRAA we are preparing students to continue their study of the arts at the post-secondary level and within the professional community.

Vocal Music

The Dramatic Arts Program at BRAA will provide students with a disciplined training in character development, voice and movement. Students will gain a broad understanding through an examination of theatre history and plays from a variety of cultures and genres. Through this investigation of the world around them students will gain a greater insight into themselves and others. Our teaching program includes both modern and traditional theatre techniques. The goal is that as students develop a deep understanding of dramatic text and technique that they will be able to transform their learning into compelling theatre.

In its initial stages, our Grade 9 Drama Program will allow opportunities for stu-dents with a drama background to continue to develop their skill set for credit. It will also provide opportunities for students without extensive dramatic arts training to connect their passion for their other art form in the drama classroom. Throughout this process BRAA is committed to providing our students with master class opportu-nities to work with local industry artists.

As our program grows, students of the BRAA Drama Program will be given oppor-tunities to intensify their study through courses in Music Theatre, Acting/Improvisa-tion, Playwriting, Directing and Drama Production depending on student interest.

Our aim is that many of our creative students will choose to deepen their under-standing of the arts through credits obtained in drama. Students will be equipped with confidence, an understanding of voice, gesture, non-verbal communication and movement that will enhance their abilities in other art forms. At BRAA we are prepar-ing students for auditions to post-secondary institutions to continue their study of the arts and opportunities within the community and professional theatre world.

Drama

The Dance Program at BRAA will provide our students with an organic opportu-nity to develop technical training, expression, historical understanding of dance cul-tures as well as a focus on individual achievement. All dance students will study the-ory, nutrition and anatomy to expand their understanding of dance, their role within the discipline, and create future pathways through an educational framework.

In its initial stages, our Grade 9 Dance Program will allow opportunities for stu-dents with a dance background to continue to develop their ballet and modern dance skill set for credit. It will also provide opportunities for students without extensive training in dance to develop their own confidence in movement. Throughout this process BRAA is committed to providing our students with master class opportuni-ties with local professional dance artists.

As our program grows, BRAA will be able to offer senior dance credits in Compo-sition (Choreography), Jazz, Modern, Musical Theatre and potentially Social Dance and/or Tap depending on student interest. For interested students we are also explor-ing the potential of offering R.A.D examinations in the future.

At BRAA we are preparing students to continue their study of the arts at the post-secondary level and in the professional community. Our aim is to provide op-portunities for dance students to build upon their extra-curricular dance training amongst other creative artists who are self-disciplined and share an appreciation for the arts. We also want to give opportunities to students who demonstrate an aptitude for dance but have not yet pursued it seriously.

Dance

The Visual Arts Program at BRAA will provide our students with the foundations for further study. Students will become familiar with the elements and principles of design and the expressive qualities of various materials by using a range of media, processes, techniques, and styles. As guided by their instructor, they will explore the definition of art and develop problem solving skills. Critique and analysis are pivotal foundations for developing artists in discussing their own work and the work of oth-ers. In this course, students will learn a variety of methods of expression with the goal of effectively communicating their idea.

In its initial stages, our Grade 9 program will allow students who have artistic train-ing to continue their art study through individualized instruction. It will also allow students interested in visual art to explore what ‘visual art’ means to them through a solid introduction to the principles of art design and practice.

As our program grows, BRAA will be able to offer senior visual arts credits in Ce-ramics, Fashion and Textile, Drawing and Painting, Sculpture, Photography, Film/Video and Visual Design, depending on student interest.

At BRAA we are preparing students to continue their study of the arts at the post-secondary level and in the professional community. Our aim is to provide op-portunities for visual arts students through master classes and workshops that will allow them to develop a strong portfolio for post-secondary applications and allow them to build a network of artists to call upon as needed.
