Program Notes:

What do lizards get up to after a day’s basking in the sun? Having re-energised on that hot rock, they are swinging out with the other reptiles. A

glass of lemonade and bowl of grasshoppers they are off and leaping. Leaping Lizards!

Performance Notes:

This one is a swinger with a bounce featuring a trombone, baritone and tenor saxophones on the melody before the rest of the band take over.

There are several short solo moments for many players in the band making this a piece that gives plenty of opportunity throughout the ensemble.

Solos then give way to an easy but dynamic shout chorus before the original melody swings us out to the conclusion of the chart. As always,

soloists are encouraged to improvise but ‘suggested’ solos are provided as a launchpad for ideas.

The chart will work really well as a swinger for a less experienced band at a tempo of 130 but a more confident ensemble will get more of a

bounce feel at the brighter 144. Lead trumpet only plays up to written E and the drum part is very manageable for young players.

The initial melody at [9] has more of a small group aesthetic and should be kept ‘up’ and in a light style with careful attention to the

articulations. Balance and blend are crucial.

Dynamics should be carefully observed throughout and in particular during the band shout at [73].

About the Composer:

Roger resides in Melbourne, Australia where he is a professional musician, composer, conductor and music educator. As a trombonist, he works

in musical theatre and has recorded for various television and movie soundtracks. Roger has also performed or toured with numerous artists

including the likes of Ray Charles and Jerry Lewis. He is a long-time member of the Daryl McKenzie Jazz Orchestra and has released 2 albums

of his own material with jazz-funk band, Dig We Must.

Roger studied music and music education at the University of Melbourne. He is currently teaching trombone and directing various young bands

at Carey Baptist Grammar. His compositions for Big Band or Concert Band regularly feature on festival lists in Australia and have also been

selected for reading sessions or concert performances at the Midwest Clinic (Chicago) over recent years.
