➢In a recent study conducted by the Ministry ofConsumer Affairs, it has been revealed that awhopping 4.15 lakh cases are still pending beforevarious government appointed consumer forumsacross the country.
➢3/4th of this number of complaints to insuranceare registered and pending at the local and districtlevels.
➢In 2015 alone, out of the 57046 cases registered,insurance complaints alone made for 34704 cases.

How to get insurance grievances addressed

➢Go to the grievance redressal cellof the insurer. These complaintsare usually handled by an officialcalled the Grievance RedressalOfficer. The insurer is bound bythe rules established under theIRDA to accept the complaintwithin 3 days and address it withina period of 15 days.

➢In event of escalation, file acomplaint with the IRDA itself.The complaint against theinsurance company as to beregistered with the grievanceredressal cell of the departmentof consumer affairs of the IRDA(Insurance Regulatory andDevelopment Authority). Anyconsumer can call the toll freenumber of 155255 or send theirgrievances via email [email protected]

➢Send a letter or fax to the IRDA, Consumer AffairsDepartment. The address of communication includes3-5-817 and 818, United India Towers, 9TH floor,Hyderguda, Basheerbagh, Hyderabad- 500029. Thenumber for faxing the complaints is 040- 66789768.
➢Complaints against insurance companies can also beregistered on the IIMS or the Integrated GrievanceManagement System. The website for the same iswww.igms.irda.gov.in.
➢The IGMS facilitates registration of the complaints ofthe concerned policyholders online and allows themto track the status of their given complaints.

➢The other method is toapproach an official called the“ombudsman” on a consumerForum. An insuranceombudsman is one whoprovides for a speedyevaluation and redressal ofyour complaints againstinsurance companies. If thereis an insurance claim in thecase of a death, any grievancecan be filed by the kin of theinsured as well.
