    LIFE EXPECTANCY AND HEALTH

There are only 40 doctors per 10,000 people in

India, where as in United States, it is as high as

    2300.

In the name of structural adjustments, the

government spending on public health has in

    fact decreased after the Economic

    liberalization.

    LITERACY AND EDUCATION

The performance of India in educating its

population has been poor compared to many

    countries of the world.

In 2001, world literacy averaged to 80 %, while

    POVERTY LEVEL

In India, it is estimated that about 300 million

people live below the extreme poverty line. The

number of moderately poor is much higher.

Since the reforms in the 90, economic

development has been robust and dramatic,

but the poverty levels show only a marginal

    decline.

    POLITICAL ISSUES

India was declared a constitutional republic and is

known as socialist, secular and democratic, but the

    caste system still exists.

Indian central government was modeled on theBritish parliamentary system.

However, modern history has been cursed with

political instability, public discontent and corruption.

    ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES

India suffers from many environmentalissues partly due to its rapidly increasingpopulation size.

There is a desperate need for newsustainable development techniques.

Indian agriculture is the biggest economicsector (employs over 50% of population),but 60% of cultivated land suffers from soilerosion, water logging and saturation ofsalt.

Another huge environmental issue in Indiais pollution in many major cities.

This is due to Indias relative poverty andthe governments lack of investment in

    healthier, more sustainable industry andinfrastructure.

    CULTURE

Indian culture is difficult to define. However, two main components are particularlyimportant:

Religion. Hinduism (over 80% of population).Extremely important to Indian culture, for

example, in terms of womens rights. The caste system. Social stratification in which

communities are defined by hereditarygroupings. It ranks groups of people in orderof their significance in society. The continuedenforcement of the caste system has caused

political instability and a lack of the freedomassociated with developed countries.

    CONCLUSION & GROUP FINDINGS

Indias economy and social situation have been

developing rapidly, but still has some problems.

India suffers from problems due to political instability

and a rapid population increase. Due to these issues, development has been a difficult process.

Because they have a huge domestic market and

human capital, there is much potential for future

    development.
