Saoirse Ronan 12news and I just remember break-ing down crying because it wassomething I wanted so much.

Your Mam and Dad wereclearly very involved, particularly at the earlystages of your career, how has that changednow? I presume you arenow more independentin how you choosescripts, has your professional relationshipwith them altered overthe years?I think it has been a pretty naturalprogression. We all kind of under-stand where the other one is com-ing from and we have all sort of hada role to play, but they’re brilliantand they always have been greatwhen it has come to me choosingwhat scripts I do. Their role in thatreally was most definitely to keep aneye out for anything of a sexual nature or something that would putme in an awkward position. I meanthey still read scripts and it’s justgreat to get another person’s opin-ion, especially when it’s someoneyou really trust.

Your parents have keptyou very grounded, youwouldn’t know you hadbeen through these hugefilm experiences becauseof the way you behave asa person. What advicewould you give to ayoung person that goesinto the film industry?I think you need to have a goodhead on your shoulders. I think youneed to know that it’s ok to say noand that you don’t need to pleaseeveryone all the time. I think that’smore to do with the whole social

What is your first memory of a film set?Well my dad is an actor and hestarted when I was a baby so I wasused to going on sets to visit him.I remember, I think it was when wemoved back to Ireland because Iwas born in New York and that waswhere he started acting but whenwe were back in Ireland I thinkthere was an army barracks. It wasa very very Irish film to say theleast, that he was working on andI remember it was really loud thatday and everyone was just runningaround. I was probably about twoor three at the time.

What was the first setyou were on that youwere actually working on?

I had done a couple of TV shows, Idid The Clinic. I was in the first season of that and I just had a little part but it was great, I felt athome and I’ve kind of felt that wayever since.

The Oscar ceremony2008, what do you remember most about that night?I was knackered because I had justflown in from New Zealand whereI was doing The Lovely Bones andwe had already been shooting it forabout five months at that stage sothere was a lot going on. But it wasan amazing time and I would loveto go back again even just as a flyon the wall to really appreciate it,because I was so young when Iwent and there was so much going

on. It was amazing but it is a lot totake in. It’s the biggest film eventyou will ever go to, but it was great.I mean, you are on the red carpetfor two and a half hours and I was 13, didn’t wear heels, thensuddenly I was put in these littleJimmy Choo shoes and my feetwere killing me. Then we got insideand everyone was starving.

What attracted you tothe role of Susie Salmonin The Lovely Bones anddid you read the book?I was quite calm about it, Mam wascrying and Dad was just jumpingabout the house. It was brilliant butwe all kind of had different reac-tions to it. So yeah, it was great butit was the same for Atonement. Wewere in the car when we got the

aspect as well but also like what Iwas saying about scenes of a sex-ual nature, you can say no andthere are things that can beworked around.

Can you recognise thetime when the life ofSaoirse Ronan, a normal teenage girlgrowing up aroundCarlow became some-thing totally different?Yeah I guess it was around thetime that Atonement came outbecause there was so much attention surrounding the filmand there was with me at homeas well. I mean, my state of mindnever changed and I neverchanged my perspective on any-thing. It was a big thing andthere was a lot of attention andit can be a lot to deal with. Ireland is fantastic because of thepeople. Nobody has ever beennegative towards me and I’venever had anyone come up tome and not be nice, only wellwishers have approached me. Ido feel I have received amazingsupport from Ireland.

Is the attitude to fameand celebrity here different than anywhere else youhave been?Well compared to America, yes. Imean we are very traditional typeof people here and are very familyorientated and that goes back togenerations before us and that hasinfluenced how we view that wholeceleb world. I think it’s mad, I don’tfeel like I am a part of it at all. It isvery interesting to see how certainpeople are really affected by it andyou do get it everywhere.

The Host was touted asthe next Twilight but itdidn’t do as well as expected. Were you relieved that youwouldn’t be surroundedby that attention?Yeah absolutely, that would havebeen too much. I think there is away to handle it but when you seeit from the outside and when TheHost came out the possibility of itgoing the same way is scary, butthat didn’t happen so it’s fine.

Did you have a sense on set that this moviewasn’t going to reach the heights that everyone had guessed it would,? It wasn’t wellreceived by the critics either, how do you handle that?To be honest I wasn’t expecting itto be the next Twilight movie andobviously every journalist youspoke to was expecting it to be thenext Twilight. I was alright, I mean,I made great friends out of it andto be honest when I was shooting Iwasn’t thinking of any of that stuff. You never do. At the end of the dayyou can only do your job. Unfortu-nately it just didn’t work out.

In 2011 we saw you asHanna when you teamedup with Joe Wright toplay that title character. When you read the script what excited youmost about the part? She kicks butt. She was just like amachine. She was a weirdo and Iloved that she was so strange. Shehad been kept away from civilisa-tion her whole life and I was justfascinated that she was basically an

15experiment and that was theheartache of the whole story.

You played Eleanor inNeil Jordan’s vampirefilm Byzantium, what didyou make of the way hetold that story?I loved it. We were talking aboutthis earlier and it was kind of takingthe vampire tale back to what it wasbefore Twilight and True Blood. Imean I was nervous because therehad been so many vampire filmsand there still are a lot being madeand I didn’t necessarily want to bepart of that group, if you knowwhat I mean. Not in a bad way, justthere had been a lot of it done. Then I read the script and it basi-cally focuses on the story and therelationship between these twoyoung women Eleanor and hermother. Neil Jordan is also greatbecause he really appreciates theimagery and wants to make it lookreally beautiful but he is alwaysaware of what the actors are doing, and you can tell he appreciateswhat you are doing too.

Would you have any interest in other roles inthe movie industry because you speak pretty passionately about directing?Yep I am. I love it. I don’t know thatmuch about it. I really should but Iam fascinated by it. I used to alwayslove when cameras weren’t digitaland I would love to direct one day.I think being as involved as you canbe creatively can be really very exciting and I think my enthusiasmfor that would be from workingwith the directors I have workedwith, they really have all been quitebrilliant.

Who is your role modelboth male and female?Meryl Streep obviously because ofher career and her longevity, andother older actresses who hadstood the test of time and have al-ways chosen character pieces asopposed to the girl next door or asexy lady, which there is nothingwrong with. It’s just it’s always greatto see a woman like Meryl or HelenMirren or Kate Blanchett and LauraLinney who really care about actingand it’s very much a craft for them.My male role model would have tobe my Dad.

Does theatre work interest you?Yes I would love to do it. I’m terri-fied about doing it but I would loveto do it.

What sort of part would attract you?I don’t know! I loved The Seagull. I really did love that play, but any-thing at all. I wouldn’t mind doingsomething small that maybe notmany people see in case I mess up.I mean my Dad started in theatre. You are on stage every night andit’s live and you can’t mess up andthere are no second takes but thenat the same time there are no wires, there are no cameras, as such it’sjust you and that other actor.

Did I see somewhere youalso expressed an interest in comedy? Your roles so far havebeen quite serious. Youhaven’t played a realcomic role have you?No, I suppose not. I mean, the firstfilm that I did that not many peoplesaw, was a rom com. The one with

InTallaghtMaster41_Layout 1 28/08/2013 18:55 Page 15

Page 16: InTallaght EDITION 41

16Michelle Pfeiffer. That was a bit ofa comedy and that was great, but Iwould love to do it. It’s just the wayit has worked out. I love watchingcomedy over everything else. Iwould choose a funny film overanything else.

What would you like tohave achieved in tenyears from now?I don’t know really, you change allthe time so the way I felt for thepast ten years and the way I feelnow is that I absolutely love actingand it’s a very natural home when Iam on set. As it stands now lookingat me in 10 years, I would love tostill be acting and maybe do a bitof directing.

You have a strong Dublin accent is thatpopular in America?Yes, the Americans love the Irish. Ifind that my accent has gottenstronger and stronger over theyears. Eventually people won’t beable to understand me when I stepout of Ireland. My family are fromDublin so I was always surroundedby Dubs even in New York, so thatwas the sound I was listening to.But yes they do love it over thereand they are kind of charmed by it.

What do you do in yourspare time to switch off?I love to be with my family andfriends but I do really like being bymyself and maybe that’s just frombeing an only child, I do quite likemy own company. Listening tomusic too is what I do when I’m offset and also getting into a goodbook. You can completely loseyourself in that.

You have travelled tomany different places. Do you enjoy travellingyourself or do you getsick of living out of a suitcase?I think if it’s just a short little visitsomewhere then sometimes I getsick of living out of a suitcase butno, I find now that as I havegotten older I love travellingeven more and reallycrave it sometimes. Ilove being home andhaving a bit of downtime but I really likegoing to new places and Ilove planes now. It’s always great tosee new places. You meet so manydifferent types of people.

Finally Saoirse yourgrandparents are from Tallaght do you get to visit much or shop in The Square?Yes, definetly. I’ve been very busywith work but try get up to visit myNanny and Grandad as much as Ican. I used to go to The Square allthe time.

Have you ever been toTallaght Stadium to see aShamrock Rovers game?No I haven’t but my little cousinplayed in their junior team for a while.

Saoirse voices the main character, Talia, in animatedfeature Justin and the Knightsof Valour, which is out on September 13.

She will also star as Daisy inHow I Live Now which is duefor release later this autumn.

I absolutely love the single, where did the idea for it come from? Darren:It just came from an ideathat I had. I was reading a bookcalled Make Your Mind An Oceanand I just went into the kitchen andput it down. The song just came tome like that. We then both workedon the rest of the tune but the ideacame as quick as that. We played itat a gig and Johnny Owen (famousactor and musician) who was therecame up to us after and said “You really need to get that songrecorded.” We met up with John Reynolds (legendary Irish producer) and he ended up doinga great job producing it.

What was it like workingwith him?Greg: It was so amazing, he's a verycool man, very intelligent, a wonderfulproducer. We had been in his housebefore for a World Band recording with

Kevin Godley so we knew how talentedhe was. We're going to do our albumwith him as well.

So there’s a debut albumin the pipeline? Darren: Yes there is, we're goinginto the studio this month to startrecording. We're going to do it instages. We're hoping to have itready for early next year. We havemost of it written already, it's just amatter of getting working on it.

How would you describeyour musical style? Darren: We've been labelled “FolkN' Roll” by a few people. It's not folkas in staring at your shoes andwearing wooly jumpers, the folkcomes from it being acoustic guitars and harmonies, but with arock element to it.Greg: It's got a laid back feel to it,sort of like The Kinks, it's honest

down to earth music.Darren: The reason John wantedto work with us is because ourmusic is honest and we sing fromthe heart. Like the line from I've GotA Plan. “If your eyes shine bright, changes will happen,” it's a fairlysimple thing. It just means that ifyour mindset is positive approach-ing something then everythingcoming back to you will be positive.

Could you tell us howyou guys met?Darren: It was in Eammon Doran’sabout 6 years ago! I was in a rockand roll band at time just finishingup a gig when a drunken Gregjumped up on stage and startedsinging into the mic!Greg: Yeah, I was a bit worse forwear and thought I could do a better job of the singing than him!Darren: The two of us singing together  sounded alright so we decided to get something going.

Greg didn't sing much at the start,I was the lead singer and he wasthe lead guitarist, which he is bril-liant at. It was only when we movedto London and we didn't have aband behind us that we started toharmonize throughout the songsand it just worked.

Who are your influences?Darren: The Everly Brothers, TheBeatles, The Kinks, a lot of the good90's stuff like Ocean Colour Scene,The La's, The Coral, Oasis, TheVerve have had a massive influenceon us and we have incorporatedthe 60's harmony sound. Luke Kellyalso, another massive influence.

Your cover of his tune TheNightvisiting Song is one ofthe best covers of anyLuke song I've ever heard.I'd recommend readers tocheck it out. Darren: Thanks very much. Wealso do a cover of The Sun Is Burn-ing which we think is even better,we plan to record it. Simon AndGarfunkel did a version of it as wellso we want to mix the two. It's ourway of paying tribute to Luke whowe feel is one of the greatestsingers ever.

You guys are based inLondon now, why did youdecide to leave Dublin?Darren: This is going to sound really arsey but we kind of had tomove away to perfect what wewanted to do. There are more venues in London, more people, more of a potential audience. At thesame time, while we were perfect-ing it in London it was the Irish, theDubs who really got behind us andsupported us.

Page 19: InTallaght EDITION 41

Away from music whatare your other interests?Darren: We're both massive Man-chester United fans. My Dad is alsoa huge fan and he used to bringme to matches from when I wasabout two! I used to get to a goodfew matches but since we've gotbusier with the band it's beenmuch harder to get the time as ob-viously the weekends are ourbusiest time. We did a tune withChris Kamara which was greatcraic! He's a hero, he was deadsound. My ambition is to get on toSoccer AM, I love talking aboutfootball!Greg: Yeah me too! More footballquestions please!

Finally, what are yourthoughts on the appoint-ment of David Moyes? Greg: I'm happy, there was no-body else available who was goingto stick around.Darren: Yeah, Mourinho would'vebeen great for the first few yearsthen he would have got bored andf*cked off. Moyes is the right man,I'm happy with him. Next seasonmight be a bit tricky but Unitedfans are just going to have to re-alise we're not going to win theleague every year.Greg: Getting off to a good startis going to be so important. Thefirst five games are tough, I never remember United having such adifficult set of fixtures at the be-ginning of a season. You justknow if they lose a coupleof them the pressurewill be on.

I’ve Got A Plan isout now. They willplay a single launchnight in The WorkmansClub on September 5.

Do you miss Dublin? Both: Yeah. It's great to get homefor a weekend Darren: I just feel places like heredon't do enough to support Irishmusic. If they dedicated more timeto playing Irish musicians than theydo to Daft Punk it'd be a start! Evenlook at Tallaght and the amount ofseriously talented accomplishedmusicians and bands that comefrom the area. I remember a fewyears ago thinking that if you tookabout five or six of the best bandsin the area and plonked them inCamden town you would have areally good scene.

You lads have been supporting some bignames recently? Greg: We just supported the MagicNumbers in a few gigs in the UK andthey've asked us to go on tour withthem. How it came about was wewere just doing a sound check in abar in Camden and their drummerwas there, pissed! He heard oursoundcheck, which only lasted aminute, came up to us and asked forour number because he wanted toget in touch. They're really lovelypeople, they've helped us out so much.Darren: They started getting usgigs and stuff and let us jam withthem, then they said they want us totour with them. We've supportedSteve Craddock (Ocean ColourScene lead singer) as well, which wasunbelievable considering we're bothsuch fans of his. He is sound, a brilliant man and he also has beensuch a great help. We played at Liamand Noel Gallagher's brother Paul'swedding recently and Gem (Ex Oasisand Beady Guitarist) came up to usafter we played saying he loved itand would love to do somethingwith us when he finishes up the latest Beady Eye tour.

His responsibil-ities include ensuring that theUnion stays on track with proposedobjectives and duties. This year, oneof Glenn and the Student Union’smain objectives is to work closelywith businesses and people in thecommunity to get Tallaght more involved and tie everything together.

The main people who help Glennin the running of the StudentsUnion are Eoin, the Education Officer, Karen, the Welfare Officerand Pauline who is the StudentUnion. Pauline is an encyclopediaon college information and hasgreat advice when it comes to allround college life. There are alsofour part-time officers who organ-ise the entertainment, look after theclubs, societies and equality issues.

There are a large number of newFreshers coming in from the 6th ofSeptember, so Glenn and the restof the Student Union Team wouldlike to welcome them and hopethey enjoy their college life in ITT.Fresher’s Week starts the last weekof September to give the new students a taste of college life. Eoin is the new VP/Education Officer at IT Tallaght StudentsUnion. Eoin representsthe students interestson all educational andacademic matters forthe year ahead. It can

range from problemswith CA’s, schedules, class

timetables, exams and anyconflicts that arise in class

between students and lecturers.

Eoin’s office is located in the Student Union building; students can come over to ourbuilding to chill out, relax and either watch a movie or playsome pool. He will have a strictopen door policy so anyone cancome in and have a chat with himabout anything that is botheringthem. Eoin’s office is also thebookshop; students can buy

second hand textbooks here for afraction of their original cost.

This year Eoin will be trying tobring in a laptop scheme wherestudents can buy second handlaptops for college, we all knowhow expensive laptops can bebut in Eoin’s opinion they arevery useful to have throughoutcollege life.

Eoin will also be running examstress and tips campaigns duringthe winter and summer exams,Eoin will also be organising a wellrun and efficient class reps campaign, he will be going aroundand getting each class to elect oneperson to represent that class. Classreps are critically important, they areour eyes and ears in the classroom.

Eoin is 22 years old from BelgardHeights in Tallaght. He has justcompleted his honours degree inMarketing last May. Eoin spent 4years in IT Tallaght and has lovedevery minute of it. In Eoin’s opinion‘the unique aspect about ITT is thatit isn’t as big as Trinity or UCD; youcan make long lasting relationshipswith everyone in your class whichwill only consist of roughly 40 people. The lectures are more intimate and personal as you caninteract with the lecturer and feelyou are being listened to. Eoin istruly envious of all the new firstyears starting as it will be the best4 years of your life.’

Eoin added, ‘We are here to helpand assist the students now andwill do our very best to representyou and make your voice heard.’

It is the job of the Union torepresent IT Tallaght students andthey are fully committed as a Student Union to provide the bestsupport for the students.

Karen said, ‘If it wasn’t for the students of IT Tallaght who votedfor me I would not have the job Ihave this year. I’m going to try myvery hard to be the best welfare officer I can be and I really want toreach out to students this year.’

When moving from SecondarySchool to College it can be an exciting but anxious time for students. Many Students are concerned about making friendsbut there are some great clubs andsocieties here in college that aredelighted to welcome new members. Karen would encourageall students to get involved. “If students are unsure of anythingthroughout the year they can always speak to Glenn, Eoin or my-self, we are all very approachablepeople and we genuinely will doour very best to help.”

When the bell rings

• Buy small, sweet apple varieties, but don’tserve apples every single day! Alternatewith other fruit to keep it interesting.

• Invest in some smaller, sealable tubs orpots, and include mixed blueberries and raspberries. Always check to see which arethe best fruits in-season.

Eating their greens

• Start them early and shovel the ‘greenery’into pitta pockets and sandwiches alike. Ifyou keep putting it in, they may even gettired of trying to pick it out, and eat it! Thesandwich is a brilliant way to get green leafyveg on to the menu, unless you are blessedwith children who actively engage withspinach or asparagus tips.

• If that doesn’t work try some grated carrot, sliced cucumber, finely chopped peppers orwhatever they do like. Maybe it’s wholecherry tomatoes. Pile them in.

• Make a softer filling, made with hummusand roasted veg for those children that eatless meat.

• Add pesto for extra flavour to sandwiches, baps and rolls.

• Add carrot sticks with dips. Also celery, peppers of all colours, sugar snap ormangetout, cherry tomatoes work well too.

• A warm vegetable soup drink is great incolder months, and you can use just aboutany combination of vegetables. Heat to justbelow boiling, pour it into a small, warmedflask and it’ll be just the right temperatureat lunchtime

Everybody has a summerthat changes their life.

The Way Way back is a story aboutthe struggles a shy 14 year old boyDuncan faces while on summerholidays with his mother Pam.

Steve Carell takes on the role ofTrent, Pam’s overbearing boyfriend.Duncan is having a tough time fitting in. Completely out of hiscomfort zone while at the localwater park one afternoon he meetsOwen played by Sam Rockwell, who is manager of the Water Wizzwater park.

They strike up an unexpected bondand friendship which continuesthroughout the movie. Duncanslowly opens up and begins to finally find his place in the worldthrough the humor and loyalty ofOwen. Owen then offers the lostteenager a job at the water parkwhere Duncan learns the ways ofthe world from not only own butother members of staff.

As his summer continues, thingsbegin to look up for Duncan. Hemakes friends at Water Wizz andmeets a young girl called Susanne

who he falls in love with.

As the story progresses it is clear toOwen that Duncan is not happywith the situation at home, morespecifically his mother’s boyfriendTrent who constantly puts himdown. He is also upset about thefact his mother seems to alwaysput him second.

From the official traileralone it is clear there areplenty of humorous moments in store for usbut it’s also a poignantcoming of age story.

With this calibre of cast Iam sure it won’t disap-point, although I was surprised to see Steve Carellplay a role of the villain aswe are used to him playingthe good guy.

The story highlights the ups anddowns of a young teenage boy whoexperiences many life chang-ing moments all during asummer he will neverforget.

than one near death experience butit’s a learning curve for all onboardthe top spec holiday camper van. Will they make it across the border? And will they learn to come together as a family before theMexican cartel tracks them downand kills them?

Overall I really enjoyed this movie.Although the storyline is pre-dictable there are plenty of funnymoments to keep the audience engaged. What will surprise peoplemost is even though a stripper anddrug dealer are the main featuresof this film, it’s quite conservativeand charming.

Jennifer Aniston doesget down to herlingerie but stillnothing tooprovocative.

When I initially heard Jennifer Aniston was playing the role of astripper I wasn’t sure whether therole would be quite damning butit’s all quite funny and certainly notawkward viewing.

I would certainly recommend thismovie to all. It’s a storyline basedon a serious issue yet the wholedrug smuggling takes a back seatwhen the relationships of the Millerfamily take off.

MusicTRAVISWhere You StandBy Rachel Lynch

SHANE FILANEverything To MeBy Rachel Lynch

Travis’s seventh studio album, entitled Where You Stand, wasreleased this month.

It was produced by their very own recordlabel Red Telephone Box. The Scottishrock band have certainly come a longway from Good Feeling, the band’s debutalbum back in 1997.

Fran Healy returns to the helm as lead vocalist, with Dougie Payne on bass guitar, Andy Dunlop on lead guitar andNeil Primrose on drums for this highlyanticipated studio album. This is their firstalbum release in just over five years.

With 11 brand new tracks the group havecertainly been kept busy. The album begins with Mother, the start of whichstrangely evokes the etheral keyboard ofPure Shores by All Saints. Fran Healy’s unmistakeable voice soon breaks in, accompanied by delicate picking on aguitar. This gives way to chugging pianoand a chorus of backing singers andbuilds to a much more upbeat track thanI would have expected from Travis.

This is followed by the new wave sound-ing Moving which is more reminiscent ofsome of the songs on 1999’s The ManWho. The album continues in a similarmanner until the emotive first single and

title track of the album, Where You Stand. This iscertainly one of the top tracks on the album andHealy takes centre stage with his delicate vocals. His familiar voice swoops up a lot at theend of phrases which fits the melody perfectly.

Track six, Another Guy, and track nine, On My Wall, are both very different yet similar in the sense that they are reminders of some of Travis’s earlier, rockier music and should be welcomed by theiroriginal fans. The lyrics of Boxes are beautiful andthe piano adds to the emotion on a whole. Thesong is about how humans spend most of theirlives in containers of one sort or another.

Overall the new album is not unrecognisable asTravis but, I do feel long serving fans of the bandmay question some elements. Certain tracks arequite unlike anything the group have done before. That said fans that have grown up with the bandwill enjoy the predictable musical direction of ahandful of the tracks. Most will agree after a fiveyear long wait they are just happy to see the guysback making music.

Bassist Dougie Payne recently told Rolling StoneMagazine that “You stay away as long as it takes,so you feel that hunger and desire to get back toit same as you did at the start.”

Shane Filan released his first solo single thismonth. Everything To Me is written by Shane Filanand Nick Atkinson (Gabrielle Aplin), and producedby Grammy award winning producer MartinTerefe. Shane is known as the former lead singerof Westlife. He, along with the band, sold over 50million records around the world, but after bidding farewell to their fans in 2012 Shane hasbeen working on his solo career.

His new single will be loved by fans of his formerband and, credit where credit is due, he has takena step forward in terms of modern pop. Thesound might come as a surprise to certain fans, but is sure to delight. It is an upbeat and optimistic tune perfect for the summer season.

The melody is slow paced yet is quite catchy. Thechorus has a slight jazzy feel to it. The video seesShane surrounded by airhostesses at a planewreckage yard while he casually dances onboarda rundown plane.

Although having listened to the new single anumber of times I am consistently reminded ofWestlife. Yes, the melody is unique, but his voicefor me will always be connected to the boy band. With an album in the works, Shane is giving hisfans a taste with his four track EP Everything ToMe released on August 30.

Jonathan Ive’s revamp of Apple’s highly anticipated iOS 7 was unveiled during the openingkeynote of Apple's WWDC on June 10, 2013.

Billed as the "biggest change to iOSsince the introduction of theiPhone", the most notable changeis a complete overhaul of the userinterface. In a promotional videoshown during the keynote, Ive described the update as "bringingorder to complexity", highlightingfeatures such as refined typogra-phy, new icons, translucency, layer-ing, physics, and gyroscope-drivenparallaxing as some of the majorchanges to the design. The designof both iOS 7 and OS X Mavericks(version 10.9) noticeably depart

Game 40

Grand Theft Auto V wasdesigned to improveupon every gameplay element found in previous games in the series.

The world of GTA V is bigger thanthe worlds of Red Dead Redemp-tion, Grand Theft Auto: San An-dreas, and Grand Theft Auto IVcombined. Areas in the game worldinclude beach fronts, mountains, wilderness, an "Alamos" Sea area"based on the Salton sea in Califor-nia", a military base, and the sub-urbs. The ocean floor is fullydetailed and can be explored.

GTA V's single-player story is toldthrough three player-controlledprotagonists: Michael, Trevor, andFranklin, criminals whose stories

interconnect as they complete missions together. During storymissions, the player can switch between the protagonists as theywork together to accomplish anobjective; in one such mission,Michael rappels down the side of abuilding, Franklin provides coveringfire with a sniper rifle, and Trevorcontrols the getaway helicopter. Agameplay video showed that

players have the ability to executeheists in one of two ways; playerscan choose to take a "loud" approach to the mission (such asgoing in with guns) or a more tactical approach (such as usingsleeping gas).

Outside missions, the player canswap between the protagonistsand explore the game's open world, which includes a fully-fledgedecosystem. The camera zooms outto a "Google Earth-style" perspec-tive when switching characters andthen drops into wherever the cho-sen character is. Even when theplayer is not controlling them, eachcharacter will still go about theirown business across Los Santos. Asany of the protagonists, the playercan engage in activities such asyoga, triathlons, jet skiing, base-jumping, tennis, golf, scuba diving,or go to the gym. Hunting wildlifeand bounty hunting from RedDead Redemption will be featured. Each character will have uniquehobbies, which can be completedwith the protagonists' friends, butthe dating system from GTA IVdoes not return. Characters can"flick off" people, "something Rock-star recommends you do in varied

circumstances to see different reactions from people". Dependingon the area, people react differ-ently. The mobile phone introducedin GTA IV returns, but many of itsfeatures have been altered. Themobile phone is mainly used foractivities and can also be used toaccess the in-game internet. Therewill be a "vibrant and fun" economysystem, initially it was thought players would be unable to buy in-game property as in Vice Cityand Vice City Stories, but in the firstshowing to the press this was revealed to be inaccurate. Shoot-ing has evolved "a longway" in terms of feel andmechanics and themelee combat is improved over that ofprevious GTA titles.

The new Carens completes Kia’s regeneration of its product line, bringing it up to the same highstandard as the Sportage and theCeed in terms of engine, technol-ogy and design.

Despite that it’s actually bigger inside and offers a large boot withneat features like the secret storagecompartment. A lot of thought hasbeen given to the seats as each onefolds down individually and moreimportantly they lie completely flatcreating a bigger space for largerloads.

I see you now, all smiles and funYou stood near me on the old school desk. Our youthful glee, was clear to all,As we returned from our daily run.Int the wild woods, as was our normal task.So then we posed, the short and the tall. The memory now is clear and true,Years long gone, and friends removed. How haunting are those dreams of your,A lovely vision in your prime.Where are they now, our pals of yore? The images thank heavens we retainOf our young days, long gone in time. One day our paths, will cross again,But until then, I will look at all,With longing, and with loving hopeof memories that passed between us both.Good bye! dear vision, let us be gone,Before our hearts doth lose their shine.

Bookworm1BEFORE I GOTO SLEEPBy S.J. Watson

Unbeknownst to me, I seem to havebeat Hollywood to it for once.

Several times previously I seem to have reachedthe party a little late when it comes to big screenadaptations of novels. Oftentimes I’ll pick up asecond hand book which would have been issued to coincide with its film release and soI’d be a year or two too late.

In this case however, I have finished Before I GoTo Sleep in good time. The movie version won’tbe out until next year but will apparently featureNicole Kidman and Colin Firth. I didn’t realisethis until after I’d finished it though. This wasanother of my mother’s recommendations and one of her better ones at that. As soon as I started reading one lunchtime, I was immediately hooked.

The novel is a psychological thriller about awoman suffering from anterograde amnesia. She wakes every day with no knowledge of whoshe is and the novel follows her as she tries to

reconstruct her memories from a journal shehas been keeping. She learns that she has beenseeing a doctor who is helping her to recoverher memory, that her name is Christine Lucas, that she is 47 years old and married and has ason. As her journal grows it casts doubts on thetruth behind this knowledge and sets her on aterrifying journey of discovery.

In an interview with The Guardian, Watsonspoke about his inspiration for the book: “I wasreading about a man called Henry Molaisonwho suffered severe amnesia following an operation he underwent when he was 27. Hedied at the age of 82, and for all that time couldform no new memories.

“I was struck by the image of that old man wak-ing up and looking in the mirror, fully expectinga 27-year-old to be gazing back at him. I re-alised how vital our memories are to our senseof self, and from that seed the whole novelbegan to grow.”

In the book, Christine makes the observationthat: “We’re constantly changing facts, rewriting history to make things easier, to make them fitin with our preferred version of events. We doit automatically. We invent memories. Withoutthinking. If we tell ourselves something hap-pened often enough we start to believe it, andthen we can actually remember it.”

Often she has flashes of memories but has noidea whether the event happened that way, orat all. I empathised with that feeling, like whenyou try and recall events from your childhood. You may have seen a photo and are just remembering details from that, or maybeyou’ve heard a story so many times that youthink it is an actual memory.

As well as being a gripping thriller, Before I GoTo Sleep raises questions about the power andcomplexity of memory and how much it mattersto your quality of life. She has lost a large chunkof her past, but this also nearly robs her of herpresent. It’s an excellent premise for a novel andI found it really well written. I’d say it’ll make avery good film as well but I’d suggest you get ahead start and give the book a try first!

About The AuthorWatson was born in Stourbridge, in the WestMidlands. He studied Physics at the University ofBirmingham and then moved to London, wherehe worked in various hospitals and specialized as an audiologist in the diagnosis andtreatment of hearing-impaired children. In 2009 Watson was accepted for the first courseWriting a Novel at the Faber Academy. The resultwas his debut, Before I Go to Sleep. He wrote the book between his hospital shifts. He was introduced to literary agent Clare Conville on thelast night of the course and she agreed to repre-sent him. It went on to win the Crime Writers'New Blood Dagger.

The book was published in 2011. In the same yearit was announced that the book would beadapted for the big screen by Ridley Scott, withRowan Joffe slated to write and direct. Cellulite is the dreaded orange peelthat effects millions of women atsome stage in their lifetime. It is more of a muscle fibre issue rather than a skinissue. It doesn't matter what your body weight is,but where there's less fat there's less cellulite.

A woman’s skin consists of free standing fat cellchambers which are separated by vertical wallof connective tissue, and are prone to collapsingwhen pressure is applied. This can be due to excess weight, fluid retention and lack ofstrength due to little or no exercise. Male fat cellchambers are smaller and have slanting wallsof connective tissue which gives greaterstrength under pressure and this is why theyrarely suffer with cellulite - lucky them!

Think of cellulite as captured waste within the fattyareas of the body. Poor blood circulation con-tributes to the congestion in the fat cells and fluidaccumulates in the tissue. Fat cells engorge furtherand clumping is more obvious, pushing the muchneeded blood vessels further away. Fluids continueto accumulate and orange peel develops.

The primary cause of cellulite is the lack ofwaste elimination and poor circulation. So this

means people who have insufficient water in-take, a poor diet and not enough exercise aremore prone to battle with cellulite! All these fac-tors cause a breakdown in collagen and elastinfibres that no longer hold the tissue tightly.

TreatmentThere isn't a single solution but if you make several changes to your lifestyle you will see adramatic improvement!

Dry Body BrushingThis is done with a flat brush with fairly stiff bristles - The Body Shop or Boots have greatselections. It's great to do first thing in themorning or just before you shower. Start at theankles and use gentle fan like movements in thedirection of the heart and concentrate on areassuch as the thighs and bum. Don't be too aggressive, this is to stimulate blood circulationand get those toxins moving. And it will improvethe texture of your skin.

Diet You will need to cut down on eating refined andprocessed foods and concentrate on eatingwater rich fruits. Water helps the body to flushout waste and helps detoxify. Fruit and vegeta-

bles are high in antioxidants which fight off freeradicals. Antioxidants prevent breakdown of collagen which is the skin support structure.

Exercise We all know the health benefits of exercise, butit is also key in shifting fatty deposits in stub-born areas where cellulite builds up. Along withyour body brushing, this is going to kick startyour metabolism and improve circulation andrid waste from the body. And you'll feel great!

Cellulite CreamsI've always been sceptical about miracle creamspromising to cure cellulite and I certainly would-n't use one unless you're following the stepsabove. But if choosing one, look for creams withbotanicals, fruits acids, retinol and caffeine.

CaffeineCaffeine, when applied topically as opposed todrinking several cups of coffee daily, eliminatestrapped water in the connective tissue - I haveheard of women vigorously rubbing coffeegrinds into areas of cellulite in the shower on aregular basis who swear by it, worth a try!!

Over the years carbohydrates havereceived a lot of bad publicity whenit comes to weight loss and diets.

Many slimming organisations would suggestthat we cut down on our intake of carbs in our diet and in some cases, cut them out completely. It is important to understand whycarbohydrates are essential when it comes toour health; not only do they provide bulk to thediet making us feel fuller for longer periods butthey are also the main source of energy supplyto the body which enables the body to performall of its daily functions.

As a source of energy, carbohydrates are a com-ponent of foods such as breads, grains, cereals, fruits and vegetables that are broken down bythe body into simple sugars called glucose andit is this glucose that is stored by the body inthe muscles as glycogen and used as energy. Therefore, carbs are essential in the diet as theyprovide our bodies with a constant flow of fuelneeded to sustain and maintain an active lifestyle.

There are two different types of carbs, simpleand complex carbs and these foods are classi-fied based on the speed at which their sugars

are broken down and absorbed into the bloodstream. Simple carbs can be absorbed a lotfaster in the body because they are made up ofonly one or two molecules of sugars and areoften used in sweets, cakes and biscuits. Overconsumption of these food types leads to apeak in sugar levels which means that whenyour sugar levels drop you tend to crave more sugar.

Simple carbs used in processing are also high incalorie content which means that over consump-tion will lead to unwanted weight gain and in gen-eral, they are of low nutritional value as manyvitamins are lost through the processing stages.

However complex carbs are the healthier carbsto consume because of their long chains of mol-ecules the body takes a longer length of timeto digest and absorb them into the blood-stream. These kinds of carbs provide a moresustained release of energy in the body mean-ing that you don’t get the peak in sugar levelsthat often leave you craving more sugar butwhat you will get is a slow release of energy thatwill last over a few hours. These complex carbscan be found in wholegrain cereals, breads, grains, lentils, peas and beans.

There are many who believe that eating a low-carb diet is a good way to achieve weight lossresults. While this may be true at the start of thediet, it is unrealistic to maintain such a diet andwhen a person returns to old eating habits theyquickly put the weight back on.

It is important to remember that to lose weightyou must burn more calories than what youconsume through food or drink. If you don’tburn off these calories you will indeed gainweight. However by eating the right types ofcarbs and getting plenty of exercise you will seea reduction in weight and an increase in energy.

So not all carbs are bad or deserve the bad publicity they have gotten over the years but itis essential to eat the right types on a daily basis.Eating whole grain breads, cereals, pastas, ricesand potatoes are the best sources to choosefrom and try to eat six portions daily where possible.

Don’t forget to eat plenty of fruits and vegeta-bles too as these should make up the main bulkof your diet for a healthier lifestyle.

Aphids are soft, pear-shaped bodied insects that suck the lifeout of your plants.

Some aphids have wings. Most aphids aregreen but they also come in red, yellow, greyand black. Aphids are about 1/8 inch long, have6 legs.

In the autumn, the female aphids mate with a maleto produce eggs that winter over. Aphids secrete asticky honeydew substance from their rear.

Ants will carry the aphids around and harvestthe honeydew from the aphids. In the autumnants will carry aphid eggs into their nest andtake care of the eggs until spring. In the springthe ants will return the aphid eggs to the plants.

If you have an ant invasion, look for aphids aswell. To eliminate aphids there are severalmethods:

1. Wash the aphids off the plants with astrong spray of water.

2. Tobacco spray: Soak tobacco leaves inwater for 24 hours. Dilute solution until itlooks like weak tea then spray on plants.Be sure to hit the bug with the spray.

Aphids tend to hide on the underside of leavesand on the main stems.

3. Rhubarb spray: Boil half a kg of rhubarbleaves in one litre of water. Next take two cupsof water and mix in one tablespoon of dishsoap. When the rhubarb has cooled pour offthe liquid and add it to the soapy water. Sprayon aphids.

4. Safer Soap™ is a product you can purchase ata local nursery. It works well on aphids if youcan get it on the body. It kills by suffocation.Aphids breathe through their pores and itclogs their pores so they can't breathe.

5. Neem oil is a by-product of the Neem tree seed.It is considered a natural way of killing aphids.

6. Diatomaceous earth is ground up fossilizedsea shells. This will puncture soft bodied in-sects and they will dehydrate and die.

7. Home-made soft bodied bug spray: Mix threetablespoons of dish soap and one gallon ofwater. Spray on the aphids every other day fortwo weeks. Test plants first to see if the soapwill burn the leaves.

8. Non-fat milk: To control aphids apply non-fatdried milk, mixed according to the instructionson box. Spray the leaves of your plants withthe milk. The aphids get stuck in the milkyresidue and perish.

9. Repellent spray: This can be used to repel

aphids and whiteflies, slugs and cutworms. Reapply after rains or once aweek. Mix one minced bulb of garlic, onesmall minced onion, one tablespooncayenne pepper, one quarter water. Letsteep for three hours. Next add one ta-blespoon liquid soap. Strain and put insprayer. Spray on plants.

10. Garlic oil spray: Use for control overaphids, cabbage loopers, earwigs, Junebugs, leafhoppers, squash bugs, andwhiteflies. Mince one bulb garlic and soakin two teaspoons mineral oil for 24 hours.Next, mix one pint of water with one tablespoon liquid soap then add garlicmix to water and soap. Mix thoroughly.Strain out garlic and place into a jar forstorage. Use one to two tablespoons garlic oil mix to two cups water. Sprayplants covering all leaf surfaces.

11. Alcohol sprays: Use for aphids, mealy-bugs, scale, thrips and whitefly control.Mix ½ cup isopropyl alcohol (70%) withone cup water and spray on leaves andpests. Alcohol can burn the leaves of certain plants. African violets and appletrees are sensitive to alcohol sprays. Testa few leaves on your plant before youspray the whole plant.

InRovers 56

What was the motivationbehind writing TallaghtTime?Karl: The first four years in Tallaghtwere just so extraordinary, espe-cially the European campaign, that’swhere the idea for the book began. In October last year I thought aboutwriting a book to record that timein the clubs history so I got in touchwith Macdara. We met up and decided to centre it around the keygames through interviews with thefans, managers and players. It tookus about six months to write.

Macdara: It was a labour of lovereally; a lot of the work involved wasvery enjoyable. Through both Karland my own involvement with theclub through the programme andwebsite we would have been therewhen most of the stories happened. We were going to publish it our-selves but a number of publishers

showed an interest in it and wewere delighted when Liffey Pressdecided to go with it. It’s not justsomething only Rovers fans wouldbe interested in though, it appealsto football fans because it’s thestory of a club that were broke andfacing extinction in 2005 who weresaved by their fans, moved to anew stadium, then didn’t just floatalong when they got there but actually competed, won trophies, got into Europe and took on someof the biggest clubs. It’s great to beable to tell that story.

How long have you bothbeen Rovers fans?Macdara: I’m just about oldenough to remember Milltown, I’m a member of the club, I’veworked on the match programmesince 2007 and I’ve been doing the player interviews since the2010/11 season.

Karl: I was only two when Roversleft Milltown so I’m a bit too youngto remember that! I’m a new fan;I’ve only been a supporter since themove to Tallaght. I also work on thewebsite and do stats for the programme. It’s the history of theclub that sparked my interest really.

What has been your own personal highlightfrom the timeframe thebook covers?Karl: Well I wasn’t lucky enough tobe one of the Belgrade 43 so myfavourite would be the matchagainst Spurs at White Hart Lane.It was my first away European tripand to take the lead in the secondhalf was so unbelievable.

Macdara: That would be the high-light for me as well. Rovers took4/5000 fans over and it was such asurreal occasion, most of us have

Macdara Ferris and Karl Reilly are the authors of Tallaght Time, a new bookchronicling The Hoops first four seasons in Tallaght. InRovers met up withthe lads to find out more about this wonderful book.

InRovers57seen White Hart Lane on television so for Rovers to be play-ing there was amazing. We tell thestory in the book about how one ofthe Spurs directors, the billionaireJoe Lewis told Jonathon Roche he’dgive him the lend of his boat ifRovers won! He also told MarkLynch that he wouldn’t buy any ofthe Rovers players but he wouldbuy the fans!

In your opinions what is it about Rovers thatmakes them such a special club?Karl: I was drawn to the wholething: the stadium, the role theyplay in the Tallaght community, thefans, and the players. As my Dadsays they are a fans club. I don’tthink any other club could havesurvived the way Rovers did. I reallyadmire the fan base.

Madara: It’s the history, they arethe most successful team in thecountry but it’s not been a dynasty, there have been times when Rovershave struggled and they’ve hadsome really lean periods. But therehave also been so many greatachievements, the fourin a row, the six FAI Cupsin a row, playing theBusby Babes in 1957,having the most numberof players to be cappedfor Ireland. The way thefans wouldn’t let the club die.

If you could change anything about theLeague Of Ireland what would it be?Macdara: The facilities, but theLOI is stuck in a vicious circle because in order to develop the facilities you need more fans coming to the games, if they don’tcome where are the clubs going to

get the money to develop the facil-ities? The standard in the leaguehas been so high for the last tenyears, as has been shown by theamount of players from the leaguehow have moved to England in thattime. The Enda Stevens move wasgreat for us. We got a player whodid well for the club, then we gotthe transfer fee for him and every-one wished him well.

Karl: The prize money is the mainissue. If you don’t finish in the topthree then you’ve made a loss already, that is the biggest concernI think.

Do you think the FAI isthe right organisation torun our national league?Karl: I don’t know, it’s a tricky subject isn’t it?Macdara: The problem with theFAI is they have huge financialproblems. I would love to see moreinterest at the top level from them

but the clubs have to take respon-sibility as well. In the past they usedto run the league themselves butwithout the FAI we wouldn’t haveEurope. Because of where they arefinancially their priority is the na-tional team, that’s their cash cow, where they make their money.

Finally lads, what areyour hopes for the rest of this season?Karl: As far as the league goes, it’sbeen a write off really, but if we winthree cups then I’d call this a suc-cessful season. We’ve a very strongsquad and I really believe with theplayers we have we can win theleague next year. And the year after that!

Macdara: It always takes time witha new manager and the playershave had to get used to a new system with five across the middle.

I’m confident we could end up withthree cups as well, the way we areset up we are a very hard team tobeat, which is ideal for cupmatches. I think we are unbeatennow in 10 cup ties so hopefully wecan keep that run going.

Tallaght Time is published byThe Liffey Press and is on saleat the club megastore, onlineand in local bookshops. Richie RyanINTERVIEWBy Padraig Conlon

58

New Rovers signing Richie Ryan comes with an outstanding pedigree, the PFAI player of the year 2010 recently joined the club following an 18 month spell with Dundee United in the Scottish Premier League.

InRovers met up with the man Hoops fans hope will become the team’s midfield talisman.

How did the move toRovers come about?Through a mate of mine AndyCousins, who is a friend of Trevor’s,he just rang me up and asked mewould I be interested in going toRovers, it just happened like that.I’d never worked with Trevor beforebut I’d heard good things abouthim. There were a few other offersbut I felt the best thing for mewould be a new challenge so that’swhy I choose to come to ShamrockRovers, to test myself up here andhopefully win some silverware.

How have you settled inwith the squad? I’ve settled in well, the players haveall been great, they’ve made mefeel at home. With Irish football youknow a lot of the lads anyway fromprevious clubs or you would haveplayed against them regularly soplayers from this league tend togenerally fit right in. The lads are

disappointed with the way theleague has gone, it’s hard to putyour finger on what’s happened.

On the plus side though they’vewon the Setanta Cup, they’re in thefinal of the EA Sports Cup and stillin the FAI Cup so there’s nothing tosay we can’t go on and win two morecups. With the quality in the squadI’m sure things will turn around soon.

After having played for a few clubs in the UK, how do Rovers compare? Rovers have an amazing set up, I'vebeen really impressed from thevery first day I arrrived. From thestadium to the training ground, everything is the way it should beat a football club. The trainingpitches are immaculate, it’s liketraining on a carpet. The backroomstaff is impressive as well, you have fitness coaches, goalkeeper

coaches, even at a lot of clubs in theUK you don’t find that.

Do you think you’re a different player to theone that left Sligo in 2011 following your spell in Scotland?I think I still have the same attrib-utes as a player, as a person I’mprobably mentally stronger for theexperience, hopefully it will benefitme.

How does the League ofIreland compare to theScottish Premier? It’s a tough question to answer because teams from either leaguenever play each other. Celtic are anexception, they’re streets ahead ofeveryone else over there, budgetwise and because of the standardof players they have. But I think thetop 4 or 5 teams over here couldeasily give the top 5, minus Celtic,

from over there a good game. Until they actually play each otherthough it’s a hard question to answer.

Did you enjoy your timewith Dundee United? It was frustrating football wise, Imade a lot of really good friendsthat I’ll always keep in touch with,so I suppose that’s one good thingthat’s come out of it. But the foot-ball was stop start for me. I’d be infor 2/3 games then out of the team. There was a change of manager inthe middle of my spell that didn’treally help me either. I don’t thinkmy style suited the way those managers wanted to play football.I was happy to leave, I came to anagreement with the club that wasbest for both parties. I’m 28 yearsof age, obviously I want to be play-ing every week and enjoying it. Atmy age you start to realise youmight not have that much time leftas a player and you want to makethe best of it.

You made a dream debut against Celtic aswell, I think you got man of the match if I remember correctly? Yes that was one of the happiertimes over there, it went really well.We won 1-0 and I did well, Ithought that was going to be thestart of a nice run but then I gotdropped for slowing the gamedown too much. It was surprisingbecause that is one of the thingsI’m good at, taking the sting out ofa game, but I was told that I wasn’twhat the then manager PeterHouston wanted, he wanted more100 mile an hour players. So thatwas that for me! I started the first7 or 8 games the following season

InTallaghtMaster41_Layout 1 28/08/2013 19:05 Page 58

Page 59: InTallaght EDITION 41

InRovers59 and we drew 0-0 at St Johnstonand I was dropped to the bench. Ididn’t get any explanation. He hadsigned me as well! I don’t think heactually knew what type of player Iwas! I think if I’d known that 6games into the following seasonthat I would be told that I slow thegame down I wouldn’t have movedover.

You went to Sunderlandwhen you were 18, doyou think young Irishplayers today should stayin the League Of Irelandif they are playing firstteam football or move tothe UK to maybe onlyplay reserve football? It’s a hard call to make because youdon’t know what can happen inthree years, you may fall out of lovewith the game or get a bad injury, you might not get the chanceagain. I’d still recommend that ifyoung lads are good enough at16/17 and get the chance to go toEngland they should do it. But Ithink clubs in the UK need to lookafter their development as a personas well as a player. Personally Imissed having my family aroundme when I was with Sunderland, Iwas 18 years old living in digs withother lads, I didn’t have my parentsthere to make sure I was goingdown the right path.

Do you think becausequite a lot of our currentnational squad played in the League Of Irelandit’s evidence of an improvement in the over-all quality of the league? The standard is definitely improv-ing all the time, most of the teamslike to get the ball down and knock

it around. But if those lads wereplaying in the League Of Irelandnow would they be anywhere nearthe national team? The league isstill being over looked even thoughnine or 10 of the current squadplayed in it recently. Look at JamesMcClean, he was playing here onlytwo years ago. When he was play-ing for Derry, playing brilliant andskinning full backs the way he isnow, Giovanni Trappatoni wasn’twatching him. Look at some of thegood 19/20 year olds playing weekin week out in the league at themoment. They’ll go away with thenational under 21s and be left onthe bench while some lad who isn’teven playing reserve football witha team in England will be playingevery game. It’s not fair on thoselads.

Who has been thebiggest influenceon your career so far?My parents, evenwhen I was a younglad I wouldn’t have gotto play competitive footballfor 4 years with Belvederehere in Dublin if it wasn't forthem. They used to drive me upfrom Templemore in Tipperaryevery weekend. If they hadn’t donethat for me I don’t know what I’dbe doing now. I’d probably beplaying hurling! They’ve alwayslooked after me with good adviceand everything.

Football wise Joe N'Do, when I wasat Sligo Joe was very good to me.I used to play in midfield with him, which was a pleasure for me. An amazing player, a lovely man,and a huge influence on me. Any young player should look upto him. Whatever Joe’s doing justdo that!

Best player you’ve everplayed against?Dennis Bergkamp or Thierry Henry, probably say Bergkamp. I playedagainst him for Sunderland last dayof the season (2004) when Arsenalwent unbeaten. I didn’t get any-where near him, he just kept knock-ing it past me! It’s a nice one to lookback at on the video alright, to seemyself running after him!

Finally if there was any-thing you could change

about the League of Ire-land what would it be? The publicity for the league couldbe better, I don’t think it getsenough publicity to promote it tothe outside world. I think the FAIcould do more for the league aswell. Obviously money is an issuewith them at the moment. A fewyears ago the money for winningthe league was quite good, it couldreally benefit a club whereas nowthe money for winning the leaguecould barely cover a few playerswages for the year.
