cabinet construction

cabinet grades

•premium—highest degree of control over quality of workmanship, materials, installation & execution of design; usually reserved for special projects•custom—well-defined degree of control over quality of workmanship, materials, installation & execution of design …vast majority of all projects •economy—the minimum expectation of quality, workmanship, materials & installation

prevailing grade—when no grade is specified, custom-grade prevails

cabinet grades

when designing casework & specifying materials, several parts need definition:•exposed parts (surfaces visible when)

•drawer front & doors when closed; open-type/glass cabinets & shelving; bottoms of cabinets; tops of cabinets…

•semi-exposed parts (surfaces visible when)•open drawers/doors; bottoms of cabinets; front edges of shelving

•concealed surfaces•Surfaces not visible after installation; bottoms & tops of cabinets

drawer guides

•important feature of well-made casework•may be constructed of wood or metal•type selected depends upon:•travel—maximum extension compared to length •width of drawer—affects rigidity of installation•action—best requires more rollers to support & distribute load •load factors—static (resting)dynamic (motion)

cabinet hardware

shelves

shelves

•kitchen cabinets normally designed for 15 psf•closets normally designed for 25 psf•bookshelves normally designed for 40 psf

participation activity:cabinet research

…think ahead to the kitchen you will be designing for the final project—what sort of cabinets will you be using? consider details such as hinges, reveals, styles etc……research these products, paying special attention to finishes, features & especially dimensions— these will be ESSENTIAL when we start drawing the plans & elevations…compile information sheets for each of your chosen pieces that includes image, finish, features, dimensions & the website address for future use
