courses, outings to farms and museum, weekly activities e.g. games and arts and craft etc.

b) To bridge the gap between the elderly and the students of Tampines Junior College and to bring joy to the elderly through interactions. c) To encourage more youth involvement in intergeneration projects by having bonding and sharing sessions between the elderly and youth (ratio of 2 youths to an elderly). d) To encourage youth to learn from the experiences of the elderly by getting the elderly to share their experiences, knowledge and skills with them (e.g. sharing of experiences and teaching of dialects). 1.2 Desired Outcomes of Project a) Students would develop their skills in communication, empathy for the elderly and social responsibility b) Students would develop into active contributors who are able to work effectively in teams, exercise initiative, innovative in designing activities that can engage the elderly. c) Students would become socially responsible citizens who have a strong civic consciousness and take an active role in improving the relationship between the elderly and youth. d) Students would become more sensitive towards the elderly and foster lifelong volunteerism. e) To collaborate with relevant organizations to help the elderly to become more active contributors to society.

3. Project Description

Cognitive training including puzzles, handicrafts and life skills are known to reduce the risk, and help slow down the progress of dementia amongst the elderly. A new study published in BioMed Central's open access journal BMC Medicine showed that cognitive training was able to improve reasoning, memory, language and hand eye co-ordination of healthy, older adults. Therefore, the students have planned many cognitive training activities that can benefit the elderly and promote interaction. In the “Reach and Bridge” project (2013), the students planned and conducted the cognitive training activities and games during the weekly schemes with the elderly, breakfast and afternoon tea programme. Furthermore, we reached out to the elderly and managed to bridge the gap between the youths and elderly through activities such as Chinese New Year celebrations, movie outing, museum visit, block party and New Water

plant visit. The programme organised were well received by the elderly. In the I cube Project (2014), we decided to continue with the weekly schemes, the afternoon tea program and the learning journeys. In addition, we help the elderly to become more active contributors to society through selling their handicrafts to raise funds and to engage them in performing for the Aesthetic-cum-VIA concert. A total of 50JC 2 and 14JC 1 Interactors were involved in this project. In addition, another approximately 100 students who were not Interactors were also involved the Aesthetic-cum-VIA concert, interactions and outings for the elderly.

3.1 Interact Club weekly schemes and Outings

The Interacters liaised with the relevant Homes in planning the series of activities every week

for the elderly depending on the needs and health conditions of the elderly.

3.1.1 Kampong Senang

The elderly in Kampong Senang are less active as many of them are not in good health and

are wheel-chair bound. Therefore, the interacters did simple activities such as Jenga, sharing

of stories, arts and craft, simple magic, bowling, sing-a-long and Bingo. The funds were mainly

used for food items, outings such as National Museum Visit and prizes for games. The

students also cleaned up of the elderly centre once a month. Hence, some money was also

used to buy cleaning materials like detergent and Dettol. The following are some photos taken

during the weekly schemes and outing.

On 25th July 2014, TPJC Interact Club brought 12 elderly from Kampung Senang for a visit to

the National Museum of Singapore. The students planned and engaged the elderly with a mini

treasure hunt to locate some of the significant exhibits. This treasure hunt had made the

experience more interesting and engaging for the elderly. Through the exhibition and stories

shared by the elderly, our students had learnt about life in Singapore in the past, gained a

deeper appreciation of their heritage and discovered anew the story of how we have come to

be of what we are today. This was indeed an enriching experience for our students. The

following were photos taken during the visit.

3.1.2 St. Luke Eldercare

The elderly at St. Luke eldercare are slightly more active but many of them are wheel-chair

bound as well. At St. Luke eldercare, interacters played interactive games like switching the

ball in the cups, number game, draw something, connect the dots, Taboo, simple art and

crafts, sing-a-long, guess the number and Bingo. The funds were mainly used for prizes for

the elderly. After discussion with the eldercare centre, there is more focus on interaction

during the weekly schemes as there are safety issues and accountability to their families

raised by the organisation.

3.1.3 Evergreen circle and low income elderly from Blk 885A

Most of the elderly at Evergreen circle are quite active and mobile. Initially the students started

with simple Art and Craft, singing sessions, memory games, Jenga and Bingo with the elderly.

When the interacters understand the elderly better, they began to change their perspective of

elderly and became more confident of devising more interactive games for them like eraser

game, connect 4,charades, Rummy O, board games, balancing hangers, golf, picking up

marbles, pass the balloons, shooting games, Zingo, card games ( Donkey ,Old maid, Uno etc.)

and balloon volleyball. The students felt that it was a fulfilling experience when they saw that

the elderly were enjoying themselves. In addition to the weekly schemes, the interacters also

brought the elderly to visit River Safari and Kranji Farms. The following are photos from their

weekly schemes.

gathering for the students to meet their elderly buddies for the day followed by a buffet lunch

at the centre before proceeding to River Safari. This outdoor session with the elderly was an

enriching experience for the students as they learnt to interact well and show care to the

elderly whom they only met on the day itself. The elderly also enjoyed the company and this

outing-cum-learning journey as they were able to visit this new site of Singapore’s tourist

attraction and viewed its rare river wildlife and the panda. The event was memorable for our

JC 1 Interactors as they gained a better understanding and appreciation of the elderly as well

as inter-generational bonding. The following are the photos taken from the River Safari trip.

TPJC Interact students and Chinese Calligraphy club accompanied the elderly from Evergreen

Circle and Blk 885A to the Kranji farm area on 2nd August 2014. The day started with a visit to

a goat farm, Hay Dairies, where they learnt more about dairy goats and the milking process. It

was followed by a farm tour and goat milk sampling. The second stop was at Kin Yan

Agrotech where they visited the wheatgrass and mushroom farms. Both the elderly and

students learnt more about the nutritional value of wheatgrass, the organic farming process

and other vegetables which include mushrooms, cactus and aloe vera. The third stop was at

Kok Fah Technology Farm where they viewed the greenhouse used for growing a variety of

high quality green leafy vegetables such as choy sum, kai lan, kang kong and spinach. The

elderly also got to purchase the fresh produce at the market located within the farm. The tour

ended with a trip to Farmart Centre for quail egg sampling before heading home. It was an

enriching experience for both the elderly and the students. The following are photos from the

Farm Visit.

3.1.4 Afternoon Tea program

This programme is a continuation from last year’s breakfast and afternoon tea program. As

there were too few elderly who would like to join us for the programme, it only went on for a

month before the program was discontinued. Money was spent on the food for the elderly who

attended the afternoon tea session. The students called the elderly and went from door to

door to visit the elderly to obtain feedback. The elderly mentioned that they are unable to

make it if it’s in the afternoon as many of them need to work or had medical appointments.

Most likely we will not continue with this program due to the poor response from the elderly in

the neighbourhood.

3.2 Collaborations with other Co-curriculum activities group (CCA groups)

3.2.1 Friendship week

Friendship week was a collaboration between the Interact Club and Student Council. The

Student Council was in-charge of publicity. The Interacters sold flowers and five stones (made

by elderly from Evergreen Circle), bears bought from suppliers and chocolates donated by

Cocoa trees to raise funds for the TPJC student assistance scheme to help the needy

students to pay for their ‘A’ Level examinations fees. 50% of the money was also donated to

help the Typhoon Haiyan victims. This project is to encourage the elderly to do their part for

society by raising funds through their art work. A total of $3206 was raised by the Interactors

through the sales. The following are the some photos from the friendship week.

3.2.3 Aesthetic-cum-VIA concert

On 2nd April 2014, the Interact Club together with the performing arts groups put up an

aesthetic-cum-VIA concert for the elderly of Kampung Senang and Evergreen Circle and the

JC2 cohort. Through the concert we would like the elderly to have an opportunity to perform

and interact with students and at the same time inspire the elderly who are watching the

performances. The concert also aims to raise awareness and appreciation of the Arts in our

school. Students from the various CCAs learnt how to communicate effectively and work

together through the planning process and rehearsals for the concert. The interactions with

the elderly allowed the students to better empathise and forge closer bonds with the elderly. It

was heart-warming to hear from the elderly that they enjoyed the performances. The elderly

were one of the driving forces behind the students’ dedication and commitment to make this

concert a success. The students also learnt to be adaptable and flexible to the changes and

requests made by the elderly. The following are some photos taken from the concert.
