Network performance management solutions for wireless To support your business objectives

Integrate new mobile technologies with IBM Tivoli Netcool Performance Manager for Wireless Development Toolkit.

Highlights

Collect and analyze data from

multiple vendors and technologies,

including new or secondary network

elements or customized services

that may not have wide distribution

Take full control of IBM performance

management technology to

build customized interfaces and

meet individual service provider

requirements

Bring new technologies to market

quickly and cost-effectively by

leveraging proven, standardized

processes to develop performance

data collection interfaces

To keep telecommunications networks

running smoothly, operations organiza-

tions must collect, analyze and report

on traffic data from all the vendors and

technologies they support — which is

no small task when you consider how

quickly wireless networks change.

When presented with a new technology

or upgrade to an existing technology,

service providers may face a dilemma

of deploying it now to satisfy customer

demand (even though its manage-

ment will require manual, time-intensive

processes) or waiting for vendors to

develop performance data collection

interfaces that fit within current organi-

zational processes.

IBM Tivoli® Netcool® Performance

Manager for Wireless Development

Toolkit gives IBM system integrator

and original equipment manufacturer

(OEM) partners the ability to define

and develop customized performance

management solutions efficiently and

cost-effectively. Together with IBM

Tivoli Netcool Performance Manager

for Wireless and IBM Tivoli Netcool

Performance Manager for Wireless

Technology Packs, the development

toolkit offers a complete and flexible

performance management solution that

can significantly improve time to market

and reduce deployment costs.

Leverage an all-inclusive roadmap

IBM is committed to delivering a

comprehensive portfolio of standard,

off-the-shelf performance manage-

ment network element interfaces in

the form of Tivoli Netcool Performance

Manager for Wireless Technology

Packs. These applications — fully

developed and supported by IBM in

conjunction with major network equip-

ment provider releases — sit on top of

the Tivoli Netcool Performance Manager

for Wireless core platform and deliver

technical performance management

features and functionality for specific

software or network elements. They offer

an efficient way to aggregate and corre-

late data from multiple vendors and

all the technologies that provide key

functionality within the network, such

as Global System for Mobile (GSM),

General Packet Radio Service (GPRS),

Universal Mobile Telecommunication

System (UMTS), Code Division

Multiple Access (CDMA), Evolution-

Data Optimized or Evolution-Data only

(EVDO), Worldwide Interoperability for

Microwave Access (WiMax) and IP

Multimedia Subsystem (IMS).

The Tivoli Netcool Performance

Manager for Wireless Technology Packs

portfolio helps address the majority of

service provider needs, allowing them

to quickly deploy and upgrade services

in the rapidly changing wireless arena.

But system integrators and OEMs also

need to deploy new or secondary

technologies such as value-added

services or transport and transmission

solutions. These technologies generally

have a greater list of smaller vendors

and may need to be customized for

individual customer requirements. Tivoli

Netcool Performance Manager for

Tivoli Netcool Performance Manager for Wireless Development Toolkit helps IBM system integrator and OEM partners easily populate managed objects into the Windows user interface.

Wireless Development Toolkit offers IBM

Business Partners the flexibility to build

on the strong portfolio of off-the-shelf

Technology Packs available from IBM.

Tivoli Netcool Performance Manager for

Wireless Development Toolkit is a pack-

aged solution offering IBM Business

Partners the tooling capability to define

and develop their own Tivoli Netcool

Performance Manager for Wireless

Technology Packs. It allows system

integrators and OEMs to take full

control of Tivoli Netcool Performance

Manager for Wireless technology when-

ever business requirements call for it.

Deliver customized solutions efficiently

Tivoli Netcool Performance Manager

for Wireless Development Toolkit is an

important resource for every stage of

Technology Pack design and develop-

ment, including requirements capture,

low-level component design, documen-

tation and package production. It offers

the flexibility of a customized solution

without the cost and time-intensive

development cycles typically associated

with customization projects. The Toolkit

packages the same fully standardized

process that IBM uses internally to

create off-the-shelf Technology Packs.

This well-defined, proven process is the

most efficient and effective way for IBM

Business Partners to build their own

customized Technology Packs.

When network equipment providers

create Technology Packs with Tivoli

Netcool Performance Manager for

Wireless Development Toolkit, they do so

according to their own product release

schedules. This amount of control

means new technologies get to market

faster, and service providers can deploy

them as soon as they’re available.

Streamline data collection

interface creation

Tivoli Netcool Performance Manager

for Wireless Development Toolkit can

help reduce the cost of new tech-

nology deployment and development.

It turns performance data collection

interface development into a system-

atic, repeatable process — improving

developer productivity and shortening

development cycles. In the process,

requirements and design information for

each Technology Pack are checked into

a repository, making it easy to main-

tain the integrity of each project and

communicate key elements to various

team members.

Tivoli Netcool Performance Manager

for Wireless Development Toolkit is

Microsoft® Windows® compatible, with

a graphical user interface that makes it

easy to use. It is built around a central

database — the KPI (key performance

indicator) Repository — which holds

requirements and design information

for each Technology Pack project. On

top of this database resides an applica-

tion called Tech Pack Designer, which

includes tools for working interactively

with Technology Pack definitions as

well as inserting, processing or

extracting information.

IBM Business Partners who build new

Technology Packs with Tivoli Netcool

Performance Manager for Wireless

Development Toolkit are responsible for

supporting them throughout their life

cycle. But IBM has a thorough training

A well-defined, proven process

The workflow for creating new Technology

Packs with Tivoli Netcool Performance

Manager for Wireless Development Toolkit

follows a seven-step process, validated inter-

nally within IBM:

1. Build a new KPI repository. Set up a

separate database, or KPI repository, for

each new Technology Pack.

2. Define Technology Pack require-

ments. Define KPIs, KPI groups, abstract

mappings, busy hours and summaries

with the LIF Parser, Counter Parser and

KPI Producer tools.

3. Produce Product Requirements Spec

(PRS). Create required documentation

with the Documenter form.

4. Define remaining Technology Pack

details. Define network configuration or

raw tables and columns, and loader or

metalayer mappings with the Component

Designer tool.

5. Run output tools to produce

Technology Pack files. Extract informa-

tion in various formats for documentation,

data descriptions for use by other tools or

as Technology Pack components.

6. Produce final documentation,

if needed.

7. Back up repository data. Copy data

with the Data Manager tool, to keep it safe

for future development projects.

The toolkit enables you to easily establish a detailed entry of individual KPI requirements.

process in place to support Technology

Pack development based on Tivoli

Netcool Performance Manager for

Wireless Development Toolkit. Training

material is also available to help devel-

opers build the gateways, or data

sources, needed to parse raw data into

a format new Technology Packs can use.

IBM can also make available existing off-

the-shelf data sources that vendors may

purchase and use as a baseline.
