DER’s consist of a variety of solutions, including utility‐scale, utility‐owned, behind‐the‐meter, or customer‐owned solutions.

Customers and the Grid
New technology is changing customer expectations and grid operations, including:• Bi‐directional power flows • Co‐optimization and interoperability of
utility‐ and customer‐owned assets• Centralized and distributed analytics• Customer assets must work safely with
grid assets• Enhanced cyber security
Transmission Distribution
Utility operations are being transformed by new technology. To respond to customer needs and keep providing safe, affordable, and reliable power, we need to transform
how we think about DER’s.
5
• On Entergy’s distribution system today, ~100 MVA of DER generation spread out over 18,000 connections.
• These technologies include solar, batteries, and back up generators. Many of these technologies already located at data centers, hospitals, and critical infrastructure throughout our system

• Analyze the current and future state of the distribution network accounting for:
• Future load growth• Large block loads• Voltage and loading limits• Economic and reliable power
• Typical solutions to distribution grid issues include:• Line reconductoring• Additional phases• Voltage regulators or capacitors• In cases of large growth pockets, construction of substations is also needed.
Distribution Planning: Now
7
• New technologies offer a new set of tools in a distribution planners toolbox
• Using DER’s, as well as Energy Efficiency (EE) and Demand Response (DR) products, how can we best co‐optimize utility and customer owned products to create a better system?
– Improve reliability– Improve power quality– Improve the customer experience
• These new technologies require new studies and analysis beyond what traditional capacity planning has had to do.
– Hosting Capacity– 8760 Load Shape

• The purpose of Customer Product Engineering is to analyze the effects of new CIS program impacts to the distribution and transmission grids w.r.t. operating limits such as voltage, line ampacities, fault current, reverse power flows, and power quality.
• We are working with Quanta Technologies to– Develop a process to better plan and design a more dynamic
distribution grid– Establish roles and responsibilities of organizations within Entergy
to facilitate in data gathering and sharing to accommodate distribution planning of new programs and DER’s.
– Learn how to incorporate new tools into our interconnection process, yearly planning cycle, and engineering analyses to safely and effectively utilize these new technologies.

• New technologies means new tools and methods of analysis• New tools are being developed that can capture changing load shapes due to customer
programs and forecasted adoption rates, hosting capacity of distribution feeders for new DER’s, and allow customers a user friendly application process.
• These new tools and analysis will change how Entergy plans and designs its system.
New Tools and Analysis
DER Cost‐Effectiveness / Propensity / Geospatial Analysis
Engineering analysis including load flow, short circuit, and protection
Identify grid needs Understand Grid Impacts of DER
Penetration/Adoption Risk analysis Coordinate with T&D Planning
Distribution Planning Tool: Synergi
Based on customer adoption/propensity research
Historical and real-time data Build load profiles, create forecast, and develop
planning scenarios Estimate cost-effectiveness / value of DER
(based on type and location)
Customer DER Valuation Tool:LoadSEER
• Generate DER Hosting Capacity• Prioritize grid and DER activities• Perform locational net benefit
analysis• Develop traditional or alternative
solutions

• Using LoadSEER to model various scenarios of customer adoptions of programs and generate substation level load profiles distribution planning can use in their planning process.
• Not only provides various scenarios of program adoption, but allows for “bottom up” forecasting.

DERs Interconnection Process
• Include three different types of interconnection− Customer owned devices− Entergy owned devices− Customer owned, Entergy
enable
• Automatic application and interconnection process − From enrollment to
energization to operation− Formulate policy positions
• Incorporate IEEE 1547 standard into the interconnection requirement− Ensure reliability and
stability
18
• To properly incorporate new technologies, both planning and standardization must take place.
• Engineering plays a critical role throughout he customer product lifecycle• Leverage new tools and analysis to better understand the behavior of new
technologies and their impacts on the grid.
• Lastly….Don’t forget about your planners!
