Descriptor: Focusing on the content area of math, participants will connect with the K-12 scope and sequence literacy map for mathematics from the Partnership for 21st Century Skills with the newly adopted math standards. Ideas and activities for integrating 21st Century Skills into the math curriculum will be shared.

Activities will include an overview of the 21st Century Skills, connecting 21st Century literacy maps to the math standards, and activities that utilize on-line math and collaboration tools. Participants will work through four math activities that address the 21st Century Skills of: * Information and Media Literacy * Communication * Critical Thinking and Systems Thinking * Problem Identification, Formulation & Solution * Creativity and Intellectual Curiosity * Collaboration

• No – but bring curriculum and instruction into line with modern world.– Emphasis on collaboration– Emphasis on problem solving– Students need to apply what they have learned in the

real world.

• “Kids learn better this way than with the old ‘chalk and talk’ approach!”

Will Teachers Become Obsolete?

“This is a story about the big public conversation the nation is not having about education… whether an entire generation of kids will fail to make

the grade in the global economy because they can’t think their way through abstract problems, work in teams, distinguish good information from bad, or speak a language other

than English.”

Tools of Classroom TalkThe following are five main “talk moves” or strategies to develop mathematical conversations in your classroom:

•Revoicing

•Asking students to restate someone else’s reasoning

•Asking students to apply their own reasoning to someone else’s

•Prompting students for further participation

•Using wait time
