Integration of Emerging Technologies: an Innovative Approach

PNWS-AWWA Conference May 4, 2017 Presented by Nicole Kaiser, Isle Inc.

Presentation Overview

Introduction to Isle and the Technology Approval Group Innovation Ecosystem & Approaches to Technology Evaluation Technology Adoption Success Stories Technology Trends from the US and Abroad

Isle & The Technology Approval Group

Who is Isle?

Isle Utilities is a global technology consultancy whose mission is to accelerate the adoption and commercialization of water sector technologies.

How

What

Why

By engaging key stakeholders and leveraging collaboration, Isle drives down technology adoption barriers through the TAG forum.

Helping customers optimize resources through the identification, due diligence and qualification of emerging technologies.

To create an environment where innovative solutions can thrive to advance sustainability, efficiency and economic success for stakeholders.

5

What is ? The Technology Approval Group (TAG) accelerates the market uptake of qualified technologies by engaging water utilities with early-stage, innovative solutions.

TAG is a global innovation forum to promote collaboration among water utilities and introduce emerging technologies.

The TAG model was first launched in the UK in 2005 and Isle has hosted >150 TAG events across the globe.

Isle has evaluated >4,000 technologies and secured >$4M in external investment for developing water technologies.

Isle Inc. is the North American division of Isle Utilities and the US TAG forum was launched in 2011.

Unique Selling Point Filtralite’s high porosity is due to the unique properties of a particular clay found only in Norway and the production method used to transform the material into filter media. Using the same method with different types of clay does not produce media with the same porosity.

Preferred Outcome from TAG

Pilot / Trial Sales

Company: Saint-GobainByggevarer AS I Technology: Filtralite Filter media for replacement of sand or anthracite (Norway)

Post-TAG Outcomes Denver Water pilot, first stage complete and

observing >25% backwash reduction

17

Company: Rädlinger | Technology: Primus Line Trenchless pipe lining system for trunk mains and sewer force mains (Germany)

Technology Category Asset Renewals, Assessment & Management

Unique Selling Point Long length single runs; high-pressure tolerance (over 1305 psi in some cases); ability to navigate bends; fast, efficient, trenchless installation; only 0.04 inch in diameter (dramatically reducing hydraulic losses compared to other methods); PE inner provides an extremely low K factor; does not need resin, UV or steam to set (once pulled through and connected it is ready to be commissioned).

Preferred Outcome from TAG

9 Technology Readiness Level

Post-TAG Outcomes Multiple pilot and project discussions

underway, TAG presentations have occurred within the last two months
