Youth Social Inclusion for Civic Engagement in UkraineUNDP

“As a project manager, the most valuable benefit in the cooperation of UNDP and Intel Education in our project is our common methodology and goals. The two halves of YSI—rural youth activities and education—work with the same fundamental principles. These are the principles that are designed to encourage a shift in the mental perspective and develop the “21st century” skills of youth. These principles need to be adopted not only by youth but also by the adults that support youth, providing a way to move from a traditional hierarchical model of behavior to a model that is effective under the knowledge economy.

Intel “Skills for Success” methodology provided the YSI project with the step-by-step way to teach adults how to encourage youth, while letting youth find their own answers. One of the most valuable things for our project was the training that our regional coordinators received as facilitators for Skills for Success. This training allowed us to have a common language, where they could understand this concept of empowering youth to learn to ask the right questions and find their own answers, rather than being told what to do.

This is the piece we are now working to teach the leaders of the rural youth centers where we work, as a way to increase youth initiative. The rural areas of Ukraine are dying, both because youth is leaving and because those that stay often do not believe that that they can affect their futures. Rural youth is often apathetic or self-destructive, with high rates of alcoholism and substance abuse. As adults learn to guide and facilitate, these young people have more opportunity to develop their creativity, their ability to problem-solve and their belief that they can take charge of their own future.”

Youth Social Inclusion for Civic Engagement in UkraineUNV

“Youth Social Inclusion for Civic Engagement in Ukraine is the largest UNV co-funded project in Eastern Europe and CIS and the first to explore the real cooperation with the business sector.

We are especially proud of this partnership because the project has merged the successful Intel model of “School for Success” within a broader development action aimed to strengthen youth centers, promote volunteerism and empower young people in rural areas.”
