Leveraging our global experience and innovative methodologies, AREVA is at the forefront of industry initiatives to utilize risk-informed decision making to manage nuclear assets. As such, we have developed a Reactor Internals Asset Management approach that allows you to cost-eff ectively meet the challenges posed by the emergent baffl e-to-former bolt (BFB) degradation issue.
As the world leader in nuclear innovation, AREVA is the only vendor with a proven risk-based solution for robust asset management. Our analytical method incorporates deterministic models, a statistical model for bolt failure, award-winning inspection capabilities, and extensive replacement experience into a probabilistic framework. Using this road map,you can intelligently and pro-actively plan examination intervals, replacement bolt patterns, and outage duration to eff ectively control cost through end of life (EOL).

AREVA’s Road Map for
BFB Evaluation
• AREVA has been at the forefront of risk-informed decision-making with our probabilistic methodology fi rst implemented in 2008
• AREVA has replaced over 8,700 internals bolts worldwide
• AREVA has inspected over 6,500 baffl e bolts, including recent MRP UT inspections
• AREVA’s methods for analysis and bolt qualifi cation can be performed independent of OEM input

In an industry challenged by lower-priced electricity options, new approaches are needed to remain viable. This is what the Nuclear Promise Initiative is designed to deliver, and AREVA is staying ahead of the curve to meet this challenge for the BFB issue. With the analytical methodology for BFB re-examination intervals (WCAP-17096) being challenged, and repair campaigns slow and hard to economically justify, there is a clear need for risk-informed decision-making rather than more costly shotgun approaches. AREVA’s probabilistic analytical method is the only approach that is proven, accepted, and eff ective in delivering optimized bolt replacement patterns, re-examination intervals, and bolt examination sampling schemes.
• Structural analysis determines if a specifi c bolting pattern maintains the structural integrity of the core barrel assembly
• Once performed, minimum bolting patterns will be provided as part of AREVA’s Asset Management program.

• Replaced more bolts than any other vendor
• Recent bolt replacements include— Clevis bolts in 2013— Baffl e bolts in 2011
• Production rate— ~10 bolts per day with single mast— ~15 bolts per day with dual mast
• Less setup and teardown time than other baffl ebolt replacement technologies
• Improved bolt design for lower stress concentrations — no qualifi cation necessary
• Crimp cup locking mechanism — no welding required for installation
• Mast extension allows replacement withcore barrel in the vessel
• Compact tool heads do not requirehoists for removal
• Improved EDM fi lter system design for lower dose and water clarity
• Extensive EDM experience for reliableproduction rates— Eliminates risk of FME vs conventional machining— Eliminates machining issues with embrittled materials
