Introduced in 1997, S&C’s IntelliTeam® Automatic Restoration System was the first product of its kind. Using peer-to-peer communication with distributed intelligence, the IntelliTeam system tracks system conditions and when it identifies faults or loss-of-voltage events, it quickly initiates service restoration. The IntelliTeam System was way ahead of its time.

In 2003, S&C expanded the IntelliTeam system capabilities with the IntelliTeam® II Automatic Restoration System . . . an order of magnitude more powerful than the original. The IntelliTeam II system is highly scalable. It supports large, complex systems and accommodates tie points from multiple sources. And with the IntelliTeam II system, each team can have up to eight controls. The IntelliTeam switches can be arranged in radial circuits, looped circuits, or a combination of both.

Now, with the IntelliTeam SG Automatic Restoration System, S&C has advanced IntelliTeam technology even further. It’s been redesigned to be even more robust and easier to use. The IntelliTeam SG system offers such important features as:

• IntelliTeam® Designer. This software simplifies system configuration and propagates settings to all team members.

• Rapid Self-Healing. This feature isolates the faulted section and restores service to nonfaulted sections in seconds by closing a single tie switch.

• Communication–Enhanced Coordination. This feature improves feeder segmentation and reduces momentary interruptions. In a system in which IntelliRupter® PulseCloser® Fault Interrupters share the same protection curve, only the IntelliRupter fault interrupter closest to a fault will open.

• Phase-Loss Isolation. This feature detects and isolates a potentially broken conductor or other conditions that cause loss of one or two phases.

• Post-Restoration Load Management. This service protects a reconfigured system from loading exceeding the capabilities of the system.

• Closed-Loop Operation. This feature eliminates the need for a normally open switching point in applications in which the loop is served from two substations. Ideal for subtransmission applications.

• Site Automation Testing. This testing lets you emulate events using actual site parameters and peer-to-peer communication and—optionally—operate switches.

• “New Normal.” This feature lets you accept the present circuit configuration as the permanent normal configuration using the IntelliTeam Designer application.

• Instant Replay. This feature aids in the analysis of events. IntelliTeam Designer collects event logs from affected devices and compiles them in a single record. You can play back the results on the single-line diagram used to configure the IntelliTeam SG system.

A truly universal solutionThe IntelliTeam SG system is an open platform offering unmatched interoperability. It can automate new as well as existing circuits. The IntelliTeam SG system works with S&C products, including fault interrupters, Scada-Mate® and Scada-Mate CX™ Switching Systems, Remote Supervisory PMH and PME Pad-Mounted Gear, and Remote Supervisory Vista® Underground Distribution Switchgear.

And—with S&C’s IntelliNode™ Interface Module—the IntelliTeam SG system works with a wide array of new and existing DNP 3.0-compatible intelligent electronic devices from other manufacturers, including protection relays and recloser controls from Cooper, Nu-Lec, SEL, and ABB.

Improves service reliabilityThe IntelliTeam SG system improves service reliability for critical areas of your distribution system, and it can be expanded to serve entire regions of your system. It requires no central monitoring or SCADA control, though SCADA is supported.

With the IntelliTeam SG system, restoration proceeds without the delays inherent in a dispatcher-operated or centrally controlled system. The IntelliTeam SG System monitors real-time current and voltage throughout the system and uses this information to make smart switching decisions.

Unlike time-coordinated restoration systems that must be carefully preprogrammed, the IntelliTeam SG system’s sophisticated operating logic can automatically restore service under multiple event contingencies. During storms or major outages, it quickly returns service to as many customers as possible, freeing utility personnel to deal with system repairs. The IntelliTeam SG system minimizes “Customer Minutes of Interruption,” improving your reliability ratings.

A field-proven restoration system now has an even faster self-healing response.

Easily implemented The IntelliTeam SG system provides out-of-the-box automatic restoration functions. No custom programming is required. The IntelliTeam SG system is the easiest, most cost-effective way to improve service reliability.

System efficiency maximizedRestoration capacity is based on real-time loading and actual feeder capacity, not often-outdated historical loading data. Your circuits can be routinely loaded higher than you would like. As a result, the IntelliTeam SG system prevents overloading during restoration. The available capacity of adjacent sources is used to restore service to unfaulted segments, helping defer the need for system upgrades and allowing you to tie circuits that traditional planning criteria wouldn’t permit.

Any remote terminal unit (RTU) or SCADA device using DNP 3.0 can be used to monitor feeder loading at the breaker and continuously transmit this value to the first IntelliTeam SG system-equipped switch outside the substation. This real-time feeder-loading value is subtracted from the total feeder capacity to determine the real-time available capacity. If the breaker is equipped with a DNP 3.0-compatible intelligent electronic device (IED), it can be readily integrated into an IntelliTeam SG system, further enhancing system functionality.

You’re in controlThe IntelliTeam SG system gives you the flexibility to select restoration strategies. You’re assured that system-planning criteria are observed and that critical users get the highest priority.

Compatible with existing systemsIntelliTeam SG system-equipped controls use the DNP 3.0 protocol and peer-to-peer communication via radio or fiber-optic cables. No substation automation, SCADA, or substation communication infrastructure is required but is easily integrated with an IntelliTeam SG system.

Designed with safety in mindWith an IntelliTeam SG system, you’re in complete control of the automated restoration process. The IntelliTeam SG system can be set to limit the number of segments involved in the restoration process. And the process is automatically stopped if it is not completed in a timely manner. The IntelliTeam SG system uses multiple blocking points to prevent automatic operation when your crews are working on the line.

S&C will fully train your operating personnel on this and all other features of the IntelliTeam SG system with simple demonstrations using actual controls.

Simple operating principles:• Each team’s mission is to maintain power on its

line segment using the normal power source, if possible.

• Each team communicates with neighboring teams through controls they share in common.

The available capacity of a neighboring team is a possible restoration source that’s available at the shared switch.

• If the normal source power is lost, the team evaluates the available capacity of all alternate sources and transfers the load to the first available source with sufficient capacity.

The alternate source can be more than one team away; inter-team data exchange ensures sharing of available capacity and coordination of all restoration decisions. If desired, you can prioritize the order in which alternate sources are evaluated.

• The IntelliTeam system protects the reconfigured system from overloading.

After the system has been reconfigured, overloading can potentially occur. If desired, post-restoration load management can be used to protect the system from overloading by shifting or dropping load based on the prioritization rules you’ve set. And now the IntelliTeam SG system allows temporary overloads to occur based on user-defined settings for overload duration and capacity.

• When normal power has been restored or the fault has been corrected, the system returns to its normal configuration, either manually, automatically, or via SCADA control.

• The IntelliTeam SG system can handle multiple contingencies.

If another event takes place after the team has transferred to an alternate source, the team will seek another alternate source to keep its line segment energized. The ability to respond to multiple contingencies makes an IntelliTeam SG system a much more effective tool than other systems. Each team maintains available-capacity statistics on adjacent teams that it can use to dynamically prioritize the restoration strategy.

IntelliTeam® DesignerThe IntelliTeam SG system is exceptionally easy to configure, thanks to the IntelliTeam Designer application. If you can draw a single-line diagram of your distribution system, you can configure an IntelliTeam SG system. Your diagram automatically populates the system settings.

The IntelliTeam Designer application runs on any PC operating on Windows® 7 or Windows® 10. It features an easy-to-use, intuitive workspace where you can create a single-line diagram of your system. Drag-and-drop tools are organized into tool sets that are easy to find.

• Drawing Tools are used to place the sources and switches, “wire” them together, and label them.

• Group Tools let you align and evenly space the sources and switches on the drawing page.

• Editing Tools include “Undo,” “Redo,” “Zoom,” and a high-level IntelliTeam Designer utility called “Validate.”

After you’ve drawn the diagram of your system, “Validate” checks your work and automatically updates the configuration for each device in the system.

Don’t be concerned about making a mistake. “Validate” provides detailed messages in the Errors tab of the Netlist Configuration window, so you’ll be able to quickly locate and resolve errors in your single-line diagram if they occur.

The Netlist Configuration window also makes short work of accessing key team settings, such as device addresses and team loading constraints. The Validate utility populates team functionality based on your diagram. All you have to do is set the addresses and desired loading levels.

Configuring DevicesConfiguring the IntelliTeam-capable devices is easy with the IntelliTeam Designer application. Now all you need to do is load the settings into your team devices. The IntelliTeam Designer application makes that easy, too. Just visit one of the team devices in the field or establish a remote connection to an entry-point device on a feeder. With a simple click of a button, the IntelliTeam Designer application will walk you through the connection procedure and propagate the configuration to all team members. And as your distribution system changes, you can quickly and easily update an IntelliTeam SG system through this same process.

Rapid Self-HealingWhen enabled, the Rapid Self-Healing feature of the IntelliTeam SG system can significantly decrease the self-healing response time by minimizing the number of switching operations.

If a fault occurs and there’s sufficient capacity in a single source, the IntelliTeam SG system will use the Rapid Self-Healing feature, opening all switches surrounding the faulted area and then closing one switch to restore service to as many outaged sections as possible using that source.

If there isn’t sufficient capacity in a single source, the IntelliTeam SG system will instead restore service to as many outaged sections as possible using all available sources.

Here’s a detailed example, showing how the Rapid Self-Healing feature works in conjunction with IntelliRupter (IR) fault interrupters:

Phase-Loss IsolationUtilities want a way to detect and locate downed conductors that don’t cause overcurrent-protection elements to trip because this becomes a serious public safety issue for them. Some very expensive relays claim to have this capability. However, they are very difficult to configure, rely on high-end signal processing, and are unreliable.

The IntelliTeam SG system now is capable of achieving much of this functionality with its Phase-Loss Isolation feature. This feature uses voltage sensing and peer-to-peer communications to find and isolate broken conductors. This alleviates the concern of having a broken conductor energized even though the overcurrent elements did not trip because IntelliTeam software isolates the broken conductor segment by de-energizing the line segment affected by the broken conductor.

Communication-Enhanced CoordinationWhen high-speed communication devices such as S&C SpeedNet™ Radios or fiber-optic cables are used, any number of IntelliRupter PulseCloser Fault Interrupters can share the same protection curve. Coordination is ensured.

Communication-Enhanced Coordination shifts each IntelliRupter fault interrupter upstream of a fault to a slower protection curve. The devices respond to the curve-shifting message in 100 ms or less, so only the IntelliRupter fault interrupter closest to the fault opens. This unique feature provides better circuit segmentation than do any other means now available. Customers will experience a significant reduction in momentary interruptions.

Post-Restoration Load ManagementAfter a widespread storm, it may take your operating personnel quite some time to complete the repairs to your distribution system to return it to the normal operating state. When enabled, the Post-Restoration Load Management feature of the IntelliTeam SG System protects the reconfigured system from loading exceeding the capabilities of the system using rules you set.

First, the IntelliTeam SG system will attempt to shift load from an overloaded feeder. If load shifting alone is insufficient to eliminate the overloading—and the IntelliTeam SG system is allowed to do so—it will shed the necessary additional load. The IntelliTeam SG system analyzes the overload condition, determines the amount of load that needs to be removed to protect the source, and uses the load-priority settings you’ve assigned to determine what loads must be removed.

Also if allowed to do so, the IntelliTeam SG system can be configured to allow temporary overloads to occur for a set time period. Once this time period is met, the Post-Restoration Load Management algorithm kicks in to determine what is needed to relieve the overload condition per the rules you set. This provides additional flexibility so more customers can be restored at a given time but still limit the time the overload is present to ensure the system continues to operate within its set limitations.

Closed-Loop OperationIdeal for subtransmission networks in which a closed loop is served from two substations. Using the IntelliTeam SG system’s scalability, complex networks can be configured comprised of a large number of S&C 6801 Automatic Switch Controls, sources, and two-source closed loops, and the available capacity of any source can be used to restore service, as shown below.

Multiple two-sub sections can be configured in a single network.

Site Automation TestingThe Site Automation Testing feature enables you to validate the IntelliTeam SG System logic and verify settings of all team members using real site parameters and your actual switches and controls. Live IntelliTeam SG system messages are exchanged through peer-to-peer communication so the integrity of your communication system is verified as well. You can emulate events and note how the IntelliTeam SG system responds, including—optionally—actually operating the switches.

The Site Automation Testing feature requires a PC running Site Automation Test Manager software, along with access to the communication system–either through the wide-area network or through secure Wi-Fi connection to an S&C IntelliRupter PulseCloser Fault Interrupter.

Site Automation Test Manager software includes a “data trap” that takes control of messaging between the IntelliTeam SG system and the team members. A script file provides the data necessary to emulate faults, loss of voltage, etc. Remaining IntelliTeam SG System data exchange isn’t affected. Test results are captured and can be replayed at any time using the Instant Replay feature in the IntelliTeam Designer application.

“New Normal”After the IntelliTeam SG system has reconfigured your distribution system in response to a fault or loss of voltage, you may decide to accept that configuration as the normal operating state of the system.

If that’s the case, create a new normal configuration

in the IntelliTeam Designer application and establish a connection to an entry-point device via your communication system. Now, with a click of a button, the IntelliTeam Designer application will guide you through the connection procedure and propagate the new normal configuration to all team members. If all Ready conditions are met, the teams will go into Ready state.

Instant Replay Piecing together event-log files to analyze what happened is difficult and time-consuming, especially when multiple field devices are involved. The IntelliTeam Designer application greatly simplifies the process.

With the Instant Replay feature, the IntelliTeam Designer application collects the event logs from the affected field devices and compiles them in a single comprehensive record. The multi-device event log can be played back on the single-line diagram used to configure the IntelliTeam SG system.

IntelliTeam Designer provides complete control over the playback. You can view it in normal time, high speed, or step by step. Just select the device involved in the event, set the approximate start time and duration, and press the Go button.

The IntelliTeam Designer application highlights the schematic segments as it marches through each step to help you quickly identify what occurred. The device ID changes color to indicate when a device is not in its normal state.

Log entries are correlated to changes on the diagram
