More importantly, the respect of all her recent team-mates. She will be helping on any event where we need her and contributing with a lot of excellent choreography on fl oor and beam.” As a senior at Pitt, Croop fi nished fi fth on the beam and 17th on the fl oor at NCAA Regionals in 2009. As a team co-captain, Croop earned the EAGL title on bars and earned fi rst team honors on both the bars and beam and earned second team recognition on the fl oor. Twice on the season Croop earned EAGL Specialist of the Week honors and set career highs on beam (9.875) and fl oor (9.900). As a junior, Croop was selected as the team MVP. Season Outlook“Match My Intensity” has become the rallying cry for the Pitt gymnastics team this season. But it is more than that. It is a challenge that each gymnast has set for their teammates. “We have set a really high goal for ourselves this season,” Pitt head coach Debbie Yohman said. “The team is buying into it and every day they talk about being EAGL champions. At the end of last year we started seeing our potential, and now we have the opportunity to start out the season with that same confi dence and belief.” From top to bottom the Panthers are focused on their goals and the confi dence is showing. A renewed energy is present as well. In addition to assistant coach Michael Rowe, who is entering his fi fth season with Yohman, Terry Kar-woski joins the staff with 13 years of head coaching experience on her resume. “Terry has brought a lot to our program,” Yohman said. “The kids have responded so well to her and in addition to her coaching vault and fl oor, she has con-tributed new ideas for the program as a whole. “It is an exciting time for our staff because we have a fantastic chemistry,” Yohman continued. “We do a lot of crossover coaching. By that I mean that we are getting contributions from everyone on each event and we are all growing from that cooperation.”

Vault: Vault will continue to be a strength of the Pan-thers this season as they are building on last year’s success. Several Pitt gymnasts are capable of a league title in 2010 with numerous 10.0 vaults in the lineup. “We have a lot of potential on vault,” Yohman said. “We have choices this year, not just Dani Bry-an. Molly Moyer, Shannon Vafi adou, Alicial Talucci, Alyssa Adrian and Meaghan Biros will all contribute. Shannon McConnell might be our most consistent performer on vault and is upgrading this season. All of our vaults are dynamic and solid. Everyone is up-grading and it should be an exciting event for us.”

Uneven Bars: The Panthers are greatly im-proved on bars this season and are looking for strong p e r f o r m a n c e s from not only Bry-an, Talucci, Amy Varela and Jessica Byich, but fresh-men Biros, Adrian and Laura Rigney. “Our starting routines are sol-id,” Yohman said. “But we greatly lacked in depth in the past. Our freshmen have really come in and pushed our veterans this year. Alicia (Talucci) had to work really hard in the fall to stay in the All-Around and that is a great sign for our program.”

Balance Beam: With Pitt’s extreme depth on the beam this sea-son, the Panthers could fi eld nearly two starting line-ups. With returners Bryan, Talucci, Thompson, Byich, Vafi adou and Moyer, Pitt has a solid and consistent group leading the way. “This year we were able to start with routines earlier than usual because the skill level was so much more advanced leading into the fall,” Yohman said. “To give an example of the strides we have made on this event, beam is Dani Bryan’s weakest event, but at times in the fall, she was our top per-former. Everyone else is extremely dependable and comes out with a solid and clean performance nearly every day.”

Floor Exercise: Expectations are at an all-time high for Pitt on the fl oor in 2010. As Yohm-an states, the level of talent and skill are back up to where they have been in the past — a level that has been expected by the Pitt coaching staff , but has fallen short in recent years. “We are fi nally back up to a talent level on the fl oor that we expect from our girls every year,” Yohman said. “The diffi culty and consistency is where it should be and we are realizing our poten-tial, which is a run at an EAGL championship. “In addition to the raised skill level, we are excit-ed with our fantastic choreography. (Former gym-nast and current volunteer assistant) Alix Croop has been a pleasant surprise with her choreography since she is new to this. She and Mike (Rowe) have really created some beautiful and powerful rou-tines. The girls have enjoyed the new dynamics and have responded in a great way.”

Newcomers: Pitt’s freshman class has also brought great expectations to the program as they will not only contribute early, but will con-tinue to push the Panther upperclassmen. “They are such a great group of kids,” Yohman said. “All four of them have so much to off er our program and we are thrilled to have them here.” Adrian is extremely strong on all four events, and especially on the bars. “When (Adrian) came in, our team saw right away that she is a great gymnast,” stat-ed Yohman. “She is such a strong all-around-er with beautiful lines. When she performs on the fl oor, she really brings people into her routine with her. But, her strength is on bars. I see her as being an EAGL bars champion in the near future.”

While Adrian is graceful, Biros is the powerhouse. Entering her rookie season, Biros is also expected to contribute immediately in a big way. “Meaghan is extremely powerful,” Yohman said.

“The height she gets makes people gasp and say ‘wow!’ She makes it look easy and she is very confi -dent in her abilities. From what we’ve seen so far, she is a good competitor and will be an asset for us.” Rigney and walk-on Mallory Credito are also ex-

pected to make contributions and develop in their rookie sea-sons. “Laura is such a gamer,” Yohman said. “She works hard in practice, but when the lights come on, she puts it all togeth-er and knows how to compete. “Mallory has an opportunity to help us out,” Yohman con-tinued. “She is now working on strengthening her basics, but she has a lot of potential on the fl oor and we are excited to see her develop.”

Schedule: Pitt’s schedule builds up to both the EAGL Champion-ships and the NCAA Regional

meets held in March and April. The Panthers, however, will be able to gague where they are early on as West Virginia and Kent State come to Fitzgerald Field House for the season opener. “West Virginia is consistenly at the top of the EAGL,” Yohman said. “Everyone wants to beat them and everyone wants to emulate them. Our kids respect what great competitors they are and we want that. Along with Kent State, which is a similar program to ours, it will be a good starting place for us. “Early on in the season we are planning on be-ing conservative,” Yohman said. “We don’t want to rush things, we want to be smart. We feel that we are going to have clean routines early on to build our confi dence.” The Panthers have a wide range of competition throughout the season, as well as new and tradi-tional gymnastics powers such as Ohio State, Penn State and Arkansas. The focus for the Pitt program, however, remains what lies at the end of the season. “EAGLs is our focus and everything we do in the regular season, they are all just steps towards the championship,” Yohman said. “We had three mid-dle-of-the-pack performaces in the last few years, but now we’re threatening to take things to the next level. Our goal isn’t to move up a place or two, but to win. “If you can’t say it, you don’t believe it,” Yohman continued. “We know we are going to have to work hard and earn it, but we are getting there and we feel strongly that we will now be challenging for the title.” The Panthers also plan to not just have individu-als represent Pitt at the NCAA Regional, but to send the entire team for the fi rst time since 2007. “We need to return a team to regionals,” Yohman said. “If we accomplish our goals along the way, we will do that. We are a regional-caliber team, we just have to go out there on a consistent basis and prove it. If we do our job, we’ll be there.”

GYMNASTICS FACILITIES

FacilityAt almost 12,000 square feet, it is the second-largest training facility in the East Atlantic Gymnastics League and one of the largest

in the Northeast Region. There are two complete vaulting setups, one of which lands into a resipit and one into foam blocks. Three sets

of uneven bars are being used, including one over a resipit. There is also a single bar over a foam block/resipit and a trench bar system.

Pitt’s facility houses seven balance beams, complete with mount and dismount areas, plus a low beam, stacked beams and pit

areas for dismounts. An oversize fl oor exercise includes both foam block and resipits off the end and a rod fl oor into foam. Behind the

tumbling pit is an in-ground trampoline and added features to the facility include personal equipment storage, bench seating, cardio

equipment and music center as well as mirrors and planned record boards.

The Gymnastics Training Center allows for the equipment to remain in place at all times. The great majority of the equipment was

brand new when the center opened fi ve years ago and is replaced on a rotating schedule or updated with newer technology. In addition,

the Panthers have a complete set of competitive equipment stored in the Fieldhouse for meets only.

The addition of the facility has allowed the coaches to recruit higher-level gymnasts. All equipment is available and in place to train

at the elite level and gymnasts see at a glance that they will have the opportunity to continue developing their skill level.

“We are so fortunate to have one of the fi nest training facilities around,” said Head Coach Debbie Yohman. “We have everything

we need to train all levels of gymnastics—from elite student-athletes to young campers. Everyone who sets foot in our training center is

impressed. The University of Pittsburgh has made a tremendous commitment to Panther Gymnastics.”

COACHING STAFF

Debbie Yohman begins her 24th season as the head coach of Pitt’s gymnastics program. She’s eager to add to an already illustrious career that has been filled with many individual record-break-ing moments and tremendous team accomplish-ments. Coach Yohman has worked tirelessly for more than two decades to help mold young wom-en from this university into fierce competitors and productive members of society. The fruits of her labor, both in and out of the gym, have come in many forms, including quality recruits from Olym-pic-caliber gyms and an ever-increasing amount of national recognition for the program. These successes have Yohman, and everyone associated with Pitt gymnastics excited for the program’s bright future. Success is not a new phenomenon for Coach Yohman and the Panthers. In 2000, she coached her team to a second-place fi nish as they hosted the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Championships. Then in 2004, she watched as Alyse Zeffi ro recorded the Panthers’ fi rst two perfect 10.0 scores on the vault and fl oor exercise. Yohman’s teams have re-ceived bids to the NCAA Northeast Regional Cham-pionships 18 times in her 23 years at the helm. An ECAC Coach of the Year, EAGL Coach of the Year and the 2002 Northeast Region Coach of the Year, Yohman has produced numerous decorated ath-letes over the years. Zeffi ro was a 2004 league cham-pion on the vault, Danielle “Freddie” Alba was EAGL balance beam champion, and Samantha Salyers won Uneven Bars both at EAGL & NCAA Regionals. Two years ago, Yohman produced two individual EAGL Champions (Dani Bryan-Vault, Andrea Arlotta-Bars). In addition to her bar championship, Arlotta left as Pitt’s all-time scoring leader with 1,609.180 points, was named Northeast Region Gymnast of the Year and became the fi rst Pitt all-arounder to qualify to the NCAA National Chapionships. The string of EAGL champions continued the next two seasons when Anya Chayka won the 2008 balance beam title and Alix Croop won the bars title in 2009. Yohman has led the team to four EAGL in-dividual titles in the last three years, more than the previous 11 years combined. “Coach Yohman, the assistant coaches and stu-dent-athletes have been working very hard to pre-pare for the upcoming season,” Associate Athletic

Director Paul Klaczak said. “They are focused on our aspiration to achieve great things in our conference and we are excited about competing this year.” In addition to having successful competitors, Yohman said one of the major highlights in the last 23 years is the new state-of-the-art training facility. “The facility aff ords us all kinds of opportunities for training skills of any level—from learning new to refi ning current skills,” said Yohman. “We have be-come more attractive athletically than we were in the past. We couldn’t train elite athletes. People are now aware of our current facility. We’ve been able to raise the level of our gymnastics and our expecta-tions and we’re getting more looks by higher caliber gymnasts.” The new facility has aided the progression of Yohman’s program and has attracted national at-tention, drawing in new recruits from Olympic-cal-iber gyms. For the past three seasons, Yohman has brought in a number of infl uential gymnasts. Their hard work and motivation rubs off on the other gym-nasts and makes them all work harder. Yohman’s gymnasts may have achieved many successes in the gym, but they have been equally strong in the classroom. In the last 10 years, the Pan-ther gymnasts have accumulated 88 All-EAGL Aca-demic selections with eight gymnasts being named to the team for four consecutive years. The team has also boasted over 70 NACGC/W All-American Scholar Athletes having a grade point average of 3.5 or better. Yohman has also had a long association with successful gymnastics programs as a competitor. During her collegiate career, she was a member of the 1976 national championship team at Clarion University. Additionally, she served as a student as-sistant for Clarion in 1977, also a national champion-ship season. She served as graduate assistant at the University of Iowa from 1977-79. Her head coaching career began at the Univer-sity of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1982. From 1982-86, she helped the Division III Panthers transition to the Division II level, giving the school an opportunity to off er scholarships for the fi rst time. Under Yohman’s guidance, the program rose from the cellar of the WWIAC to a national contender, as they fi nished runner-up to national champion Univeristy of Wis-consin-Oshkosh. Following her tenure at UWM, she

returned to the NCAA Division I level as an assistant coach at Oklahoma State. She spent four years in Stillwater before coming to Pittsburgh. Yohman has also devoted many years to leader-ship at the national level. She has been unselfi shly in-volved on many committee and volunteer positions with the National Association of Collegiate Gymnas-tics Coaches including the evolution of the Women’s Collegiate Program Committee, the rules advisory body that works closely with the NACGC and the NCAA Gymnastics Committee. Yohman is widely regarded by her peers through-out the NCAA as an expert go-to person for questions on the JO Code of Points and NCAA modifi cations. Yohman is a current representative of the Wom-en’s Collegiate Program Committee, has served two tenures as its chair and previously was the NCAA Gymnastics Coaches representative to the Women’s Technical Committee (WTC) of USGF. Yohman also served for four years as chairperson of the ECAC Division I Selection Committee. She has served as meet director for Big 8, Big 10, and MAIAW Regional Championships, and is a USAG Elite judge.

COACHING STAFF

Terry Karwoski enters her fi rst season as an assistant with the Panthers’ gymnastics program, after having served as head coach at Western Michi-gan for the past 13 years. “We are so fortunate to be able to attract someone of Terry’s experience and committment to our program,” head coach Debbie Yohman said. “Terry is one of the most positive people I have ever been around. She is an excellent teacher and a wonderful addition to our team and staff . The athletes and support staff took to her immediately and she’s brought a wealth of ideas which compliment the things we are doing. I’m pleased to work with someone of her caliber and I look forward to her role in achieving our goals.” “I am absolutely thrilled to be joining the Pitt gymnastics staff ,” Kar-woski said. “I have been extremely impressed with the positive environ-ment and the quality of life that Pitt fosters for its student-athletes and I can’t wait to get started. “I am really looking forward to joining Debbie and (assistant coach) Mike (Rowe) and bringing my 13 years of experience as a head coach to the Pitt program. Debbie has set outstanding goals for this program and I am ready to step in and help achieve those goals.” During her time as head coach at Western Michigan, Karwoski helped lead her squad to a Mid-American Conference regular season and tourna-ment title in 2006, and was named the MAC Coach of the Year in 2002 and 2006. In the classroom, Karwoski’s student-athletes excelled as well. Western Michigan received NCAA recognition for a perfect Academic Progress Rate (APR) score in 2008 and 12 of her student-athletes have been named as NACGC/W Athletic-Academic All-Americans. Karwoski originally hails from Doylestown, Pa., where she began gymnastics at Central Bucks. She later trained at Berks gymnastics, from where she was recruited to compete for Western Michi-gan. Karwoski w i l l j o i n h e r husband, Chris, at Pitt. Chris was named as a n a s s i s t a n t men’s soccer coach for the Panthers in the spring of 2009.

Mike Rowe is now in his fi fth year as an assistant coach for the Pitt gymnastics team. Rowe is primarily the head coach on the uneven bars and leads the Panthers’ recruiting eff orts. “Our incoming freshman class has made an immediate impact on all of our line-ups this season,” Rowe said. “Their greatest contribution will be to our bar depth. It’s been exciting to see the competitiveness they’ve brought in every respect on all events this preseason.” His immediate contributions to the program were recognized in 2007 when he and former assistant Jessica Bartgis were named the Northeast Region Co-Assistant Coaches of the Year. Last season, he coached senior Alix Croop to the EAGL uneven bar title. He also coached Andrea Arlotta, the 2007 EAGL Bar Champion. Originally from Michigan, Rowe has over 20 years of experience in gymnastics instruction and competitive coaching. While in Michigan, Rowe worked at Geddert’s Twistars-USA as a head compulsory coach, optional team coach and choreographer. Rowe was an integral part of the women’s coaching staff , qualifying all but one gymnast to the 2005 Junior Olympic National Championships, and he continually produced national champions. He was additionally a member of the 2002 Region Five USAG Coaching Staff of the Year. “I truly have an experienced, dedicated staff that begins with Mike” says Yohman. “His high energy, enthusiasm and outgoing personality keep the environment lively but focused. He has an easy rapport with recruits, their parents and coaches, along with a well earned respect among his peers. He is competitive as well as a strong technician in all areas from skills to dance. He is a total professional and is tremendously loyal to the Pitt family and university.” In addition to coaching at Geddert’s, Rowe was a clinician for the Region 5 Mini-Congress, Michigan State Congress and various state and region camps. He chaired a National Gymnastics Day initiative to raise money for Children’s Miracle Net-work at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, Mich. Rowe is a 1985 graduate of Michigan State Univer-sity where he was a colle-giate cheerleader. Prior to that Rowe was a gymnast at Western Michigan and in high school. He also danced professionally from 1983-1996, mostly in regional and national tours of musical theatre.
