Welcome Address
“I WILL bless the Lord at all times: his praise shall continually be in my
mouth. My soul shall make her boast in the LORD: the humble shall hear
thereof, and be glad. O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt His
name together.”
~Psalm 34:1-3
A Sincere Christian greeting to our visitors, fellow saints and friends. We greet you
in the matchless name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. It is with great delight and
pleasure that we welcome you to Berea Apostolic Faith Church. We are so excited that
you have chosen to worship with us today, at the place where we receive correct
teaching according to the word of God.
It is our prayer that you will allow the Love of Jesus to consume you and open your
understanding to understand His Word, and receive healing from whatever ails you.
Jesus said in His Word, “I am the Lord that healeth thee.” It is our belief that you don’t
have to leave this place the same way you came in. Jesus promised “healing” for your
body, mind, and soul. Remember that you always have a standing invitation to worship
with us, and may this be a day that you will always remember.
Biography of Pastor Edward C. Matheny
Pastor Edward C. Matheny is the son of the late Mrs. Annie M. Ivy and Joshua
Matheny. He was born and raised in the city of Indianapolis, Indiana. He is married to
Oberon Matheny. They have been blessed with five children, two daughters, Crystal
Joyce and Lydia Kay Matheny, and three sons, Victor Allen (Joanne) McNeal, Cedric
Michael (Millini) Matheny, and Geoffrey Lynn (Makeda) Miller. Pastor Matheny has
five grandchildren, Nicholas Purcell, Kali Thompson, Victor McNeal III, Gabrielle
McNeal and Isaiah Miller.
Pastor Matheny was baptized in Jesus’ name and received the gift of the Holy Ghost on
January 26, 1979 under the ministry of District Elder Willie. W. Harris, Pastor of
Greater Christ Temple Church in Nashville, TN. As a college student at Tennessee State
University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology and Chemistry in
1981, he was awarded the “Rookie of the Year” for outstanding soul-winning in 1979.
Pastor Matheny served faithfully in various capacity of the church from
“groundskeeper, bus driver, Sunday school teacher, pastoral assistant and associate
minister. Upon graduation from TSU in 1981, Pastor Matheny moved back to
Indianapolis and became a member of Bethel Tabernacle Church under the leadership
of District Elder Owen Q. Young. He served faithfully as an usher, Sunday school
teacher, youth chairman, bible bowl participant and associate minister. During this
time, Pastor Matheny began to serve as council evangelist, International Convention
Teacher, Apostolic Bible Student Association Speaker and Panelist, Outreach Ministry
and Altar Worker. From 1983 to 1985, Pastor Matheny served as an Assistant Pastor
under two pastors, namely, Elder John H. Grier, Antioch Apostolic Church of
Indianapolis, Indiana and Elder Robert I. Scott, Christ Temple Church, Hendersonville,
Kentucky. In 1985, after the death of Elder John H. Grier, he became a member of
Grace Apostolic Church of Indianapolis, Indiana under the late Bishop Morris E.
Golder. During this time he earned his Master’s degree in Business Administration and
became instrumental in working with Aenon Bible College of Indianapolis, Indiana as
an adjunct professor. At Aenon Bible College, he helped develop instructional material
for “home study” ministerial training and licensing. He was ordained an Elder in 1994
and served in various capacities in the church. He was often called to teach Bishop
Golder’s Sunday School classes in his absence. In 1996, Pastor Matheny heeded the call
of God to move to Stone Mountain, Georgia, where he founded Berea Apostolic Faith
Church in his home, with just his family and a few newly met friends.
Biography of Pastor Edward C. Matheny (contd.)
In 1998, Pastor Matheny was lead of the Lord to move the ministry from his home to
3960 Rockbridge Road in Stone Mountain, Georgia. As the Lord led him, this small
unoccupied building was renovated and this became the place of worship for next six
years. During this time, the Lord added to the church as such as should be saved. As
the membership began to grow, Pastor Matheny founded the outreach program the
“Church in the Wilderness” feeding the homeless program.
In 2004, the Lord pressed upon Pastor Matheny’s heart to find a larger facility to worship. In July of 2004, Berea Apostolic Faith Church moved to their current location at 850 South Indian Creek Drive, Stone Mountain, Georgia. Elder Matheny believes that every born again believer has the responsibility of winning souls for Christ. He also believes that it is the duty of the church to train and equip Ministers, Deacons, and Missionaries for this great task. Therefore, it is his goal to train and equip future leaders of the church, so that they can be effective in their ministries. Pastor Matheny is a graduate of Tennessee State University of Nashville, Tennessee and Indiana Wesleyan University of Marion, Indiana, and has completed additional studies at Aenon Bible College in Indianapolis.

Berea’s Vision Statement
Vision – is the ability to see the opportunities
within your current circumstances.
It is the vision of a place where many hurting, depressed, frustrated and confused
can find love, acceptance, help, hope, forgiveness, guidance and encouragement.
It is the vision of people united together in one body working harmoniously, not
for self-recognition but serving to fulfill the will of God.
It is the vision of a ministry where every member is a part and doing their part for
the perfecting of the saints and the edifying of the body.
It is the vision of love in action! A dynamic love that reaches out to make
disciples of men.
It is a vision of light and life. The light of truth as demonstrated through living
the life of holiness and dedication to the things of God.
It is a vision committed to studying God’s Word and living the example, devoted
to sharing the Word with others.
And the brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas by night unto Berea; who
coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews. These were more noble
than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of
mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.
~ Acts 17:10-11 KJV
Berea’s Mission Statement
Exalt the Saviour, Evangelize the Sinner, and Equip the Saint
History of Berea Apostolic Faith Church, Inc.
The ministry of Berea Apostolic Faith Church officially began in September 1996,
with the filing of the Articles of Incorporation with the Georgia Secretary of State’s office. In
October 1996, Pastor Edward C. Matheny began the process of moving his family to Atlanta,
Georgia from Indianapolis, Indiana. Beginning in January 1997, Pastor Matheny and his
family, joined with neighbors and friends, held bible classes and church services in their new
residence, in Stone Mountain, Georgia. In the fall of 1997, the corporation was granted
501(c)3 status by the Internal Revenue Service. In 1998, the Lord laid upon Pastor Matheny’s
heart to seek another place of worship because they were outgrowing the “basement” services
in his home. The Lord directed Pastor Matheny to a vacant building at 3960 Rockbridge Road
in Stone Mountain, Georgia. After contacting the owner and negotiating a lease contract, the
few members of Berea worked to renovate the 1200 sq. ft. space. Three months later, in
November 1998, Berea held its first service in this facility. The Lord continued to bless the
work, and souls were added to the church.
In 2004, with the approval of the congregation, the church relocated to its current location at
850 South Indian Creek Drive, Stone Mountain, Georgia. The current property, which
features two buildings on 3 acres of land and was once a Masonic Lodge, met the needs of our
small but growing congregation. The church successfully negotiated a lease-to-purchase
contract with the Lodge leaders, and leased the buildings for the next three years, from July
2004 to May 2007. During this time, Berea worked to gain rezoning approval from the
DeKalb County Board of Commissioners. In order to purchase the property, rezoning was
required. Where two other organizations had previously been unsuccessful in obtaining this
rezoning approval, Berea’s request was denied, then appealed and finally approved. The
rezoning approval cleared the way forward, to proceed with the purchase.
In May 2007, the Lord blessed the congregation to purchase the property from the lodge.
Since that time, the Church has completely renovated the interior of the sanctuary and work
has begun to build classrooms and a baptismal in the lower level of the fellowship hall
building. In 2013, the church building exterior was painted. In 2014, a portion of the
driveway was paved, both buildings had roof and gutter replacements, and the fellowship hall
building exterior was also painted. Lord willing, in the next year we will purchase a church
van, restart the classroom build project and beautify our fellowship hall interior, among other
things
In the near future, the church is looking forward to offering a ‘Before & After School’ program
for our neighborhood youth, becoming a host site for the GED program, and continuing to
build a strong bond within the community in which we serve.

Anniversary Guest Speakers
Bishop Ivan R. Gordon, Sr. is the founding pastor of First Assembly Apostolic Church, in Decatur Georgia. Ivan R. Gordon, Sr. was born in Terre Haute, Indiana, on January 6, 1958, to Elder Mayfield and Mrs. Elizabeth Gordon, the eleventh of their twelve children. He was raised in a home where strict holiness was taught, and the fear and admonition of God was prevalent. Even as
a young child, he displayed a genuine interest in the word of God, and wanted to follow the principles and teachings that were set before him. He was baptized in the name of Jesus, under the Pastorate of the late Bishop Stanley Halton before he was even tall enough to stand up in the pool, and a few years later on January 7, 1966 the Lord filled him with the Holy Ghost. He discovered his love for music early, and began playing the piano at the age of nine, and later played the cello, and trumpet.
In October 1976, Bishop Gordon preached his first message entitled: “Stop, Look unto Jesus,
and You Shall Live”. Shortly after, he married Sis. R. Renee' Purnell on November 12,
1977. Unto this union were born three children. He worked as an associate minister at
Bethlehem Temple Church -Terre Haute, IN., and was the Chairman of the Minister’s
Alliance. He also served as the Vice Chairman for the Youth Dept. in the Tri- State Council for
8 years. After talking with his Bishops, he felt the Lord leading him to a greater
calling. Bishop Ivan Gordon knew that God had called him to pastor shortly after he started
his ministry. However, this was not in motion until 10 years later. Bishop Gordon states, “I
would awake from my sleep and God would inspire me to pray. The inspiration would be so
strong, I couldn’t go back to sleep.” The name of the church came one night through
inspiration – The CHURCH began at Jerusalem as the FIRST official ASSEMBLY of believers,
headed by the APOSTLES as they followed the instruction of the Lord Jesus Christ. From this
came the name, “First Assembly Apostolic Church.”
Although the church has been blessed with much progress, we are excited that this is just the
beginning! What God has started we know He will continue to refine. By the grace of God,
with prayer and fasting we will press until the victory is won. As the psalmist wrote, “Except
the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it…”

CONGRATULATIONS!!!
Pastor Edward C. and Lady Oberon Matheny
and Berea Apostolic Faith Church Family
Dear Reader: When God said it, that settled it. Whether you like
it or not! You must remember that God is very strict in His
Commands.
Listen: There are many ways to be saved-(Born Again) according to
the teachings of man but, there is only One True way according to
God’s Word. That One True Way is the Way that the Apostles of
Jesus Christ taught and practiced in Acts 2:38;
Which Reads:
”Repent, and be Baptized every one of you in the Name of
Jesus Christ for the Remission of Sins, and ye shall
receive the Gift pf the Holy Ghost.”
Acts 2:39 tells; that this Salvation belongs to all Mankind upon the face of God’s earth. It Reads:
“For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as
many as the Lord our God shall call.”
Serious Question: Should we Obey the Doctrine of men and not Obey the Doctrine of the Almighty
God of such an important matter as our Eternal Destiny? Remember, we must spend Eternity
somewhere; either in Hell or in Heaven Forever. Once we get in Hell we cannot get out. (Revelation
20:10 & 15)
Dear Reader: You better look into it, because eternity in the Lake of Fire and Brimstone is too long
to be neglectful; there is no end. The only escape route is to take the Apostles of Jesus Christ advice
and be safe. To fulfill Matthew 28:19 you must obey Acts 2:38 &39.
It is written:
Then they that feared the Lord spake often one to another: and the Lord harkened,
and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared
the Lord, and that thought upon His name. And they shall be mine, saith the Lord of
hosts, in that day when I make up my Jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spared
his own son that serveth him. Then shall ye return and discern between the righteous
and the wicked, between him that serveth God and him that serveth him not
Malachi 3:16-18
Congratulations Pastor Edward Matheny and First lady Oberon Matheny
on your 18th Anniversary. May the Good Lord continue to give you wisdom and
understanding, to lead and direct His people. Thank God for one more Year.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!
Pastor Edward C. Matheny & Berea Apostolic Faith Church
God has blessed us with a man of faith, a man of vision,
a man with a passion for lost souls, a man filled with the Holy Spirit.
Pastor Matheny, may God continue to guide you as you go forward in His Mighty Name.
May God shower His choicest blessings upon you.
With much love, the Shorter Family
Pastor Matheny, God sent you to Stone Mountain to do a work! He has been mighty faithful these 18 years! Continue to focus wholly on the work He called you to do. The vision shall surely come to pass! God said it, and that settles it! YOU SHALL REAP, if you faint not. Payday is coming soon, and very soon. Precious Saints of God – Remember the words of our LORD Jesus – “Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.” Don’t lose focus. Don’t be slothful. God expects faithfulness and obedience. Our reward is according to our work. Our eternal life is at stake. We can make it. Let us serve the LORD with gladness! Matthew 16:24-27 24 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. 25 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it. 26 For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? 27 For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.
Love and Blessings, Lady Oberon Matheny
Thank You!
“Having therefore obtained help of God, I continue onto this day…” ~Acts 26:22 Greetings in the Mighty Name of Jesus!

Special thanks are due to the Anniversary Committee. We want to thank you for your
untiring work ethic in striving to make this celebration a success. I know that your job

Thank you to the great saints of our church that have rallied together to show your love
for your leader and for our church. I am so thankful to have your support in this work
for the LORD. “Be not weary in well-doing…” the best is yet to come!
Thanks to our guest pastors, ministers, and congregations who have taken the time to
