SPECIALIST ADVISORY

COMMITTEE

Seah Chin Aik

Dear Members, I would like to begin by introducing our new Membership, Marketing and Communication manager Jeffrey Low who takes over from Monica Cheang. Jeffrey is a friendly guy so don’t hesitate to say hi when you see him. I also take this opportunity to wish Monica the best for her future endeavours. She is one of the pioneer staff of our club and had been a great help during the last few years when I was working on charity golf and editorial committee matters.

On the front cover you will see a photo of our golf heroes with the coveted SGA Team Championship trophy. This competition is played under a new format where results are determined by “matchplay” and all players have to face-off with their opponents. To add to the level of difficulty, a senior division had been added and all division scores are counted as a team. So our low and high handicappers, juniors and seniors have to cooperate as a team in the mammoth task to win. NSRCC was slightly behind in the penultimate round but managed to pull out all the stops to pip SICC in the last round. Congratulations! Team NSRCC are now looking for new recruits next year to defend the title so if you are passionate about golf, enjoy team camaraderie and have an indomitable fighting spirit, we want you! Please contact the golf office for more details.

In this issue you will read about our NS day golf competition. Although participation was down from last year due to the Presidential elections on the same day, zealous members signed up and performed “Gotong Royong” to repair our golf course divots before teeing off. Covering up divots with sand and repairing ball marks allows roots to quickly re-grow. This is important as our golf course utilisation rate is very high and care of the course will help us to maintain current green fees.

On the resort front, NSRCC hosted the 12th Youth Inter-Club Bowling League competition and our junior member Gina Lim did well to emerged as Girls division champion. She was runner-up and 2nd runner-up in previous years and persevered to win this time round. Well done! Another event the resort committee is busy organising is the member’s annual Year End Party. Chee Peng and his committee have arranged fantastic entertainment, food and drinks to go round. There are lots of lucky draw prizes to be won including top 3 prizes worth $2500, $1500 and $1000 each. Gosh, with only two hundred places it certainly sounds like a good deal with good odds to win something to start the New Year with.

The word “stress” was coined in 1936 by Dr Hans Brunoselye. According to him, stress can be good or bad. This month my picture was taken at the NSRCC’s tranquil area, behind the gym where you can rest or read a book and be rejuvenated to fight workplace stress. My NSRCC friends have also gone on a weekend makan and golf trip in the heart of KL. Perhaps you would like to gather a few friends and replicate what they did.

We are trying to increase our presence through our e-newsletter RV Connect and social media platforms to reach out to our membership base. There is a member’s F1 photo contest that you can read about under our “Live Well, Eat Well’’ section. The article will also be available on our Facebook pages. For our active alternative media users, please “like” our Facebook page. We will increase content available electronically and you might wish to opt out of receiving hardcopy RV in future and save a few trees.

Have a good read and wishing you Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Regards,Tan Sze WahEditor

CorrectionThe following error was noted in the previous issue of RV Sept/Oct 2011 in the article, ‘Member found guilty of altering Golf Scorecard’: The sentence “the club found him guilty of submitting higher scores” should have been “the club found him guilty of submitting lower scores”.

updates

It all started very early one Friday morning, with our enthusiastic golfers lugging their golf bags to a luxurious supersized tour bus. From the outside, it appeared almost like any other normal Singapore-KL bus, but the key difference was the large “First Class” sign emblazoned across the side. It’s rather odd that bus travels could be considered first class, but the moment we entered the passenger area, what amazed us were the widest passenger cocoons we had seen since Singapore Airlines rolled out their sky suites.

Each full leather reclining seat was located in its own cocoon, equipped with massage function and cup holders. Safety was not forgotten, each seat was equipped with comfort seat belts.

In front was a personal 10” LCD monitor offering a wide selection of 100 Asian and Western movie titles, interactive games or music channels. With a variety of onboard entertainment, the mile markers along the North-South Highway flew by.

An hour into the journey, the coach steward served us delicious and rich nasi lemak which was surprisingly tasty. After a quick restroom stop about halfway through

the journey, we arrived at our destination in Bukit Kiara - Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club (KLGCC), a prime residential suburb of KL.

The outstanding clubhouse greeted us as the bus pulled up through the impressive driveway. The changing rooms were spotless and lunch was scrumptious, but nothing could top the amazing view from the elevated first tee and the immaculate condition of the course.

KLGCC, designed by Robin Nelson and Rodney Wright, plays host to Maybank Malaysian Open and Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia, among other prestigious tournaments and justifiably so. It has two 18-hole courses: the West Course, an international championship Par 72 course and the East Course, a social, wetlands-themed course.

The course with undulating rolling fairways required strategic shot-making at many holes. Despite the hot weather, the beauty of the course and companionship made it all worthwhile.

After our game, we departed for our hotel, Mandarin Oriental in the heart of Kuala Lumpur City Center (KLCC), right next to the iconic Petronas Twin Towers. Mandarin

Kuala LumpurA Neighbouring Golf Paradise

Golfers travel far and wide for golfing holidays, but just a stone’s throw away in neighbouring Malaysia exists a golfing paradise. Brian Tan recounts vivid memories of his trip to NSRCC-KL affiliated golf clubs with fellow golfers from 19-21 August. Here is an account of their adventure and we tell you how you can organise one of your own.

updates

Oriental has been a landmark in the city for over 20 years, but the hotel showed none of its age. The greeting was warm and the rooms were luxurious. Dinner was international buffet style at the hotel’s Mosaic Café Restaurant. Of special mention was the wide fresh seafood spread and full grill with plenty of choice cuts grilled in front of your eyes.

We had our afternoon game the next day at the Royal Selangor Golf Club (RSGC). Located in the heart of the “Golden Triangle” section, the city centre, RSGC is a prime oasis within the bustle and rush of KL City.

Established in 1893, RSGC is almost 120 years old. It has two full 18-hole courses and a shorter 9-hole course. It is a walking only course, which fortunately for us, was relatively easy to get by after our fatigue from the previous day’s game. We played the Old Course, which, at several holes offered amazing views of KL City skyline. There were few water hazards and OB lines, fairways were wide but lined with multiple mature trees, requiring good drives and punishing errant ones. Greens, at some times required precision approach shots.

After our game, we had dinner at Restoran Oversea, a famous Chinese restaurant in Jalan Imbi. The Char Siew and Roasted Pork Belly were excellent appetizers. Also fantastic was the Pork Belly Hot Pot and the Big Head Prawns in Black Sweet Sauce which are not to be missed. Prepare to pay RM100 per head for a truly meaty, heavy dinner. Bookings are a must if you want a taste of the pre-ordered Char Siew and Roasted Pork Belly.

Before our coach departed the next day, we spent the next four hours shopping at Suria KLCC, just round the corner from our hotel.

Located at the foot of the Petronas Twin Towers, Suria KLCC is an immense, crescent-shaped shopping centre with six floors of major international brands, retail outlets and food courts. It is also home to Malaysia’s only branch of Kinokuniya housing two floors of books, making it KL City’s premier bookstore. Also notable is Madam Kwan’s restaurant which is famous for its Nasi Lemak.

Just next door is Jalan Ampang, offering a large range of clubs, pubs and late night shopping all within walking distance.

Finally, it was time to depart and we headed back to Singapore feeling extremely satisfied with our fill of golf, food and fun.

Travel Tips- Do not bring down your luggage or golf bags from the bus at Customs when entering Malaysia.- Bring golf and luggage bags with wheels for easier transit as you will need to completely unload as you pass through Customs on your way back to Singapore.

NSRCC fielded five teams of bowlers to play an Inter-Club friendly match at Serangoon Gardens Country Club (SGCC) on 28 August. Made up of two adults/mixed teams, two youth boys teams and one mixed youth team, the match got off to a fiery start as both sides battled neck to neck for each game.

Despite the valiant efforts of our bowlers, only the 2nd youth boys team managed to score a win against SGCC with a total of 2117 pinfalls. Special mention goes to Jonathan Hong from the NSRCC youth boys team who bowled a high of 660 pinfalls.

We would like to put on record our thanks and appreciation to our host for the warm hospitality and friendship accorded to us.

Gina Lim Emerges as Girls Division Winner! The 12th Youth Inter-Club Mixed Bowling league was held over a period of 24 weeks and is one of the major tournaments in our youth bowler’s calendar. A total of 11 clubs participated in the tournament as NSRCC played host to the event on 24 September.

Our team was represented by 20 bowlers ranging from 13 to 21 years old and they showed that they were no amateurs when it came to the mixed bowling league. This year’s league posed great challenges, making it full of excitement and evoked a high level of intensity. Despite coming in 7th place this year our bowlers put up a very good fight on the lanes and their team spirits was clearly unrivalled.

Gina Lim nabbed individual titles for the League awards high series scratch and Masters awards high game scratch. She previously came in second and third place for past tournaments but managed to step up her game this year to emerge as winner of the Girls Division. When asked about what she had gained from participating in the Inter-Club bowling league for the past few years, 20 year-old Gina Lim replied “The Inter-Club has been great fun, we learnt good team spirit and to never give up.”

Indeed, during the league this year, Gina had shown great perseverance and focus on the game to walk away with the champion title.

The event culminated in a prize giving ceremony and dinner held at Jumbo Seafood Restaurant. During the dinner, our bowlers engaged in interactive activities and gave a surprise birthday celebration to our bowling convenor, Florence Khemlani. Jessie Phua, President of Singapore Bowling Federation commended the club’s overall performance and has this to say, “It was a very well planned function and tournament. More importantly, NSRCC has been a tremendous host.”

Constant Wind Match Racing Cup 2011 –

RESULTS

The highly anticipated Constant Wind Match Racing Cup was held at NSRCC Sea Sports Centre during 8th and 9th October 2011. This year, the number of teams that participated in this event increased to 16, as compared to 12 teams last year. The race started in perfect conditions, in blue skies and relatively light winds, and some of Singapore’s elite match racing teams, gave the spectators action packed sailing, with tough maneuvers pushing the boats to their maximum. The excitement kept on going all day long with tight racing to the last match of the day.

The titles were decided on the last day of the race as Maximilian Soh, and his crews, Andrew Paul Chan and Fidelis Tan triumphed out on the waters as they claimed the 1st position.

Coming up right behind them were the champions, for the 2010 Constant Wind Match Race, Low Wen Chun and his crews, Justin Lin and Chung Pei Quan. After a close and tough fight with a photo finish, the third place eventually went to veteran sailor, Borstnar Vladimir and his crews, Omar Agoes and Borstnar Rafaela.

Once again, Constant Wind would like to thank all the supporters, as well as the sailors for taking part in this year’s match racing cup. That mentioned, do look forward to next year’s match racing cup, as the pack is expected to grow. Till then, enjoy sailing!

The KinderGolf SuperJuniors Golf Championship 2011, which was held at the Executive Par-3 Course of the club, saw 57 young golfers coming together during the Final Rounds for a time of fun. Apart from all the enjoyment and family bonding, the event was also aimed at encouraging young golfers to take up the sport competitively.

Throughout the span of three months from June to August during the Qualifier Rounds, more than a hundred kids between the ages of 4 to 12 have competed in divisions respective to their age groups, allowing them to have a fair competition platform for both boys and girls. With the Finals held on 8 and 9 September, the champions were crowned and they walked home with prizes and pride.

All participants were invited to the prize presentation ceremony and lunch at the Jumbo Seafood Restaurant.

But did you know: A Maclaren F1 car has a top speed of 240mph while a Canadian long drive champion Jason Zuback broke the world record with a golf ball speed of 204mph.

Playing both golf and watching a F1 race will damage your hearing! So watch out! The first golfer in history was King James IV from Scotland while James “Jim” Clark. Jr was a F1 Team Lotus racing driver from Scotland who won two World Championships, in 1963 and 1965.

In recent years, Williams F1 race team and constructors applied their F1 aerodynamics to golf by using a Tungsten alloy known as Densimet in their irons.

Neither the presidential election nor drizzle could dampen the spirits of golfers who turned up to mark National Service Day Golf. The place was teeming with golfers armed with sand bottles and divot repair tools. At the start of the Marshals’ siren, golfers proceeded in the spirits of “gotong royong” to fill divots and repair ball marks on the golf course before moving to their respective tee-boxes for the shot-gun start.

Gracing the dinner was Rear Admiral Ng Chee Peng, Chief of Navy. RADM Ng gave away prizes to the winners and heartiest congratulations to William Tay who bagged the Overall Champion this year. He was also the champion last year.

We look forward to seeing you next year!

NSRCC narrowly edged out Singapore Island Country Club (SICC) by 1.5 points to grab the SGA Inter-Club League Overall Champion Challenge Shield 2011 after 13 legs of grueling competition.

Teams from four divisions represented the club from March to August as players fought it out for honour for themselves and the club. In divisional events, NSRCC retained the ‘A’ Division title, while coming in 2nd, 3rd and 4th place for ‘B’, ‘Premier’ and ‘Seniors’ Divisions, respectively.

Wee Yee Kok, captain of Senior Division deserved our mention for scoring the most individual wins having won 11 out of 11 games played. In leg 3, NSRCC made history in the Inter-Club record books by defeating our opponents 12-0.

The team held on to 2nd position in the earlier legs. However the turning point of the match came at the 13th leg played at SICC. It was indeed a nail-biting finish as our opponents faltered in their away game and our players won the game 10-2. This contributed to the crucial 1.5 points lead that sealed the victory for the club.

We congratulate all teams and players for an exciting season and special congratulations to “Division A’ for their tenacity, bringing home the divisional title.
