INTERACTIVE LECTURE DEMONSTRATIONS ASSIGNMENT for ILD Small Group Session June 13, 2017 New Faculty Workshop American Association of Physics Teachers Interactive Lecture Demonstrations (ILDs) are a strategy for making the learning in a large (or small) introductory physics lecture class more active and engaging. The ILD Small Group Session on Tuesday morning, June 13 will introduce you to ILDs—by presenting several to you, and provide you with the resources you will need to implement them. The session is intended for those whose class structure includes lectures. It should be of interest to (1) those who want to experiment with small incremental changes to their introductory courses, (2) those interested in making more dramatic changes in their courses and (3) those looking for strategies to use on a regular basis in a flipped classroom. The questions we will address are: What changes in teaching strategies are needed to make a lecture classroom a more active learning environment? How do ILDs accomplish this? Please consider these question as you read the enclosed article, “Using Interactive Lecture Demonstrations to Create an Active Learning Environment” prior to the morning of June 13. We are looking forward to working with you at the New Faculty Workshop! David R. Sokoloff Ronald K. Thornton University of Oregon Tufts University
