« Mécanique Panorama » [Mechanical panorama] proposes a reflection on the interaction between inhabitants and their environment, be it urban or rural, geological or architectural. The environment conceived as the space in which we evolve over time. This ingazes of inhabitants at their windows, bearing witness to the different scales that distinguish us as individuals within the spaces that surround us. This project has been shaped as an experience that asks itsembrace the scale of given landscapes. These reveal the unseen activities and phenomena occurring each day during the 16 daily hours during which we are awake. Spectators become attuned to the rhythms of cities and countrysides, clouds, trafficthese surfaces. This tempo is bigger than we are, and our ability to unpack it, connects us more fully in our environment.

Principle Mécanique Panorama is an interactive video installation created to allow the manipulation of the image of landscapes over a 24 hour span. During a time of preparation spent in the surroundings of the exhibition area (a neighborhood, a town or a territory), the artistic team meets with inhabitants, offering to set up a camera in front of a landscape visible from their window or balcony. A camera specially designed for this task takes shots at regular intervals over 24hours, capturing the evolution of a landscape. Stars, clouds, traffic, streets—everything visible within the camera field—will be registered and then transferred into a machine. This machine, which we have named a «Chronotrope», consists of a wheel and a video projector. As landscapes that have been captured are projected, it allows exhibition spectators to interact with its images. When no one is turning the wheel, a fixed image meets the gaze. The act of turning switches the images continuously. When the wheel moves quickly, the fixed images mutates into a video, as in cinematography. In slow motion, it becomes possible to concentrate on individual images. These can be read forwards or backwards, according to the direction in which the wheel is turned: landscapes shift from day to night, or time is rewound and night changes to day. The « Chronotrope » contains a volume of landscapes that is bigger or smaller depending on the space where the installation was produced, and it is possible to select a specific landscape to be used for this experiencing of time.

The experience

This very simple principle, which can be adopted instantaneously, allows one to enter into his or her own experience. The different landscapes amount to about 16,000 photos, each of which reveals a fragment of the day it was recorded and teaches us something about the secrets of landscapes. Something normally unobserved gives a new edge to familiar landscapes. The passing of time is an opening that encourages us to perceive important moments. Images captured at the inhabitants’ windows could be called “portraits of landscapes”; they allow us to measure the passing of time, taking us to a scale that surpasses us. Through choices and ways of manipulating the wheel, spectators create a constantly changing landscape. Little unseen details are discovered, the movements of cities or skies are decomposed; as if the wheel were a vinyl record, the landscapes can be “scratched” in any desired way. Creating an intimate approach to these surfaces.

Being an inhabitant is belonging to a landscape

A specific methodology has been devised to provoke a meeting with inhabitants who will share the views from their window.

In a first stage, the artistic team enters into contact with on-site actors and institutions. Once this initial interaction has facilitated connections, it is the inhabitants themselves who tend to move the project from one landscape to another (one inhabitant introducing the team to his or her acquaintances, and so on).

The setting up of photographic equipment and the presence of a team in participant’s homes are conceived to respect their constraints and to impact their daily lives as little as possible. The team is normally on site for no more than an hour and a half. This moment spent in someone’s home affords an opportunity to dialogue with participants and to ask questions regarding their relation to their environment. In fact, it is an inhabitant’s expression that best synthesizes the goal of our research: “For me, to be an inhabitant is to belong to a landscape.”

Technical requirements

Preparation time

The preparatory phase, including meeting the inhabitants and capturing landscapes, requires approximately a week.

This preparation is assured by Arnaud Chevalier, a member of the artistic team who needs to be hosted near the exhibition space.

Setting the installation up and taking it down

The set up and assembly of the installation takes a full day. It requires the presence of Aurélien Conil and Arnaud Chevalier.

The venue staff is only needed to unload the installation, and to help understand the exhibition space.

If the set up begins at 9am the opening could occur at 7pm but not before.

The artistic team will be present at the exhibition opening and later if possible. The assistance of a mediator is needed when the exhibition lasts for more than four hours a day.

Dismantling takes approximately three hours.

Aurélien and Arnaud need to be housed near the exhibition space in separate rooms.

Space: Indoors:

Around 35sq m, in a single room.

Outdoors:

Around 42sq m in an open space (like a square, a park, a forecourt…)

Height:

3m minimum (4m recommended)

Condition:

The space needs to be in good working condition: an empty room, clean walls, and a steady even floor.

Screen or wall:

In both indoor or outdoor conditions, the video can be projected onto a clean white projection screen measuring 2x3m minimum (ideally 3x4m). It can also be projected onto a clean white wall measuring 2x3m minimum (ideally 4x6m).

Before arrival

Electricity:

Access to two standard electrical outlets is necessary.

Storage:

A small and protected storage space is required to store the technical equipment of the team. It is necessary to store the installation in outdoor conditions as well.

Access:

The site of the exhibition space must be accessible by car.

Lighting:

Artificial lighting can be requested to facilitate the movement of the spectators.

Darkness:

The area must be sufficiently dark to allow for video projection. In outdoor conditions, city lighting or any other lighting should be disabled. During daylight, the installation must be set in a shaded area with no direct lighting.

Technical requirements must be discussed with the artistic team before their arrival to set up the installation. To choose the exhibition space, plans and photos will be needed.

Summary of technical device

The «Chronotrope» is composed of a computer, a video projector, a small led light and an Arduino board.

Team ARNAUD CHEVALIER / Conception and photography specialized in the intersection of technical creativity and living art. He has worked as scenographer, performer, and light-designer. He began his exploration of art at university and has since collaborated with scenographers, directors and dancers. These experiences have enhanced his interest in both traditional and modern techniques, which he applies to outside artistic projects or uses to develop his own intuitions. He is presently exploring the capacities of new media, including videography and photography, while collaborating with scientists or engineers to research un explored interactions with the public and to make visible hidden aspects of the environments we live in.

Aurélien Conil / Engineer schooled as a signal engineer, he works on the creation of interactive mechanisms that intermingle electronics and information technology for the sake of art. He also directs shows for which he has created musical machines, programs choreographies for robots and creates video-projection systems. He also worked for a year as trainer at the Fablab La Casemat in Grenoble (France). He sees himself as a technology designer who develops tools linking video production, video creation, musical creation, and the use of sensors and electronic drivers. Each tool he creates is unique and adapted to the specific needs of a given project.

JULIEN LEFÈVRE / Editor Trained in film-editing and post-production, he uses his technical capacities to experiment in the diverse frameworks of projects (video clips, web series, trailers, TV documentaries). He is also a video-production manager for theatrical companies and is today employed as a video-maker at Lieu Multiple (France). Julien has channeled his creativity to delve into the relationships of image associations in various exhibition contexts, especially the expressive potential of image editing. As a movie buff, he observes and explores the interacting of videos and the cinema, the space of junction that enables the passage from technical support to art object.
