Effects of WWI• World War One made the holocaust possible.

Because of new advances in technology mass killings became normal and people became used to seeing devastation. Before WWI the holocaust would have been unthinkable and Hitler would have been stopped immediately.

• Hitlers Role

• WWI is where Hitler found his niche. He loved fighting in the trenches and found the terror exhilarating.

Effects of WWI

• When Germany lost the war, they were ready to blame anyone they could. They decided to blame those who fought against fascism from the beginning: The Jews and Socialists. The Government had created propaganda that named the Jews and Socialists responsible for the loss and said they were backstabbed by their own people. This created hatred in German hearts and gave Hitler the ammo he needed for the Jewish question.

WWII

• Germany was at the center of World War Two. Hitler was in power and gaining more support every year. He eventually got support from other fascist groups in countries such as France and Yugoslavia. Germany was fighting on both sides of its borders, the East and the West. The East (Communists) and the West (Democracy) decided to fight together to put an end to Fascism for good.

WWII

• WWII was being fought to rid the world of fascism, it wasn’t until later that the allies found out about the death camps. Those in these camps were only liberated at the very end of the war and tragically 6 million Jews and many others died before the allies stomped out the camps.

Hitler/Fascism

• Hitler, originally an austrian, fought for Germany in WWI and then joined the Nazi party in Germany. Their mission was to bring the Nazi party to the forefront in the German government. Hitler moved up in rank fast and was soon chosen to lead the Nazi’s into power because of his ability to give speeches that aroused and convinced people of his goals.

Hitler/Fascism

• Germany had over 20 political parties, so no one really held a majority. The most that the Nazi party received was about 36% of the vote right before the war.

• They received this many votes because they kept their propaganda purposefully vague. Many were disgusted with the current system and the Nazi’s generated interest by saying “Hate the system?! Vote Nazi!”, never explaining what their policies were exactly. Back

Ethnic Cleansing

• At first the death camps were used for extermination only, but because the war was taking away so many men from the German workforce, they used the camps as a recruitment for slave labor.

• Usually women and children were killed right away and only the strong men were able to live a little longer because of the labor they provided.

Ethnic Cleansing • Before the Germans used gas chambers to kill those

in the camps they placed them in trenches and shot them.

• After they were killed hundreds of bodies were thrown on top of each other in mass graves.

• Many people starved to death. Rations usually included a piece of bread and soup once a day

• Living conditions were unbearable with no room to sleep, no family, fear of selection(if you were selected you were killed) and fear of starvation. Back

Finally Free!

• Those still alive and living in the camps could hear the allies coming nearer toward the end of the war. Every time they heard bombs getting closer, they would have to move to another camp deeper into Germany. On the journey they had to run the whole way with no food, no water, no rest, no shoes and usually in the snow.

Finally Free!

• Selection was used more and more to get rid of as many Jews as possible before the Allies found the camps and saved them.

• When the allies finally stamped out all the camps more than 6 million Jews were killed and those that they found alive were on the edge of starvation.
