I don’t have a way with words, but neither didEinstein. That being said, I just wanted to thank SLS forawarding me Student of the Year. I never believed thatI could have won. Students Leading Students is an amazinggroup. SLS is what made me, me today. Without SLS, Iwould still be the anti-social girl sitting in the corneravoiding eye contact with everyone in the room.Without SLS, I never would have met my best friend.SLS to me is helping people realize their potential.

Before SLS, I knew no one in high school. Freshmanyear I hated school. Not because of the homework, because that is inevitable. But, because of the bullies and the people who would exclude you from everything.Once I started going to SLS, it made school more bearable. My sophomore year,I got more involved in SLS, and it became my life.

Today SLS has made me a little bit more outgoing, even if I am still shy.I’ve met so many people who have become my second family. Mr. Bartlett and Mr. Coateshave been great role models and have had such an impact on my life. I have no words for

how amazing they are. Thank you for making my last three years of high school so amazing.-Paige Webb, SLS Student of the Year 2014, Cousino High School (photo above)

Orchard Lake St. Mary’s SLS Speakers Share Important MessageBy Brenden Wallington, OLSM SLS Chapter President

On September 17, 2014, the Orchard Lake St. Mary’s SLSChapter had the privilege of welcoming Orchard Lake Police Chief JoeGeorge and his wife Sandy Richards to our campus to serve as aprecursor to Homecoming. As we all know, Homecoming is a timewhere peer pressure is strongest; if a high school student were ever to betempted with drugs or alcohol, this would be the time.

Chief George reminded us of the consequences of giving in topeer pressure, but he also reminded us that this should put no restrictionson having fun. One of the things that Chief George stressed is knowingthe contents of your vehicle. This includes knowing what is brought intoyour vehicle by passengers. Being caught with alcohol in your vehicle asa minor, will lead to you and any other passengers to receive an MIP --which Chief George called, "A big mess you do not want to deal with."Overall, Chief George’s words had a tremendous impact on our studentbody. I believe his ability to do this was a direct result of his many yearsof experience. Chief George understands what students go through. Afterthe conclusion of Chief George's speech, his wife Sandy Richards sharedher experience with a tragedy brought upon by distracted driving.

Mrs. Richards' son was killed in a car accident several yearsago when he crossed over the middle line while driving his cousin home.Richards' main point was that you never know when your world will beflipped upside down. You could see the immediate impact this point hadon the students. I know I was not the only one who pictured my ownworld being devastated with the tragedy of losing a loved one, and themere thought of it is hard to cope with. Sandy made us vow to be morealert while driving because she does not want others to have to feel thepain she felt when she lost her son. Today Mrs. Richards is anaccomplished author of the book A Far Cry . . . from Home, which tellsthe story of the loss of her son, the pain, and the recovery.
