Channarayanadurga, a village having a hill fortress is at a distance of 95 km from Bangalore. It is one of the nava-durgas ('nine-forts') around Bangalore. This 1139m hill was fortified by Channapa Gauda, a chief of Madhugiri in about the middle 17th century and was later taken by the Marathas. It was also under the control of the Mysore Rajas during whose regime the name of the place was changed to Prassannagiri. In one of the inscriptions, dated 1766, the hill is called Channarayanadurga.Successive wars with Mysore ruler Haider Ali and his son and successor Tipu Sultan resulted in vast tracts of land passing into British control. Small but strong fort surrendered to troops commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Maxwell on 23 July 1791. Control was officially ceded to the British by the Treaty of Seringapatam (Srirangapatna) at the conclusion of the war in 1792.

The walk uphill is on a steep rocky slope. The ruins of this majestic fort is inquisitively structured with ancient temple, dungeons, granaries and other ancient structures. A day trek or camping in the fort is an exclusive experience.

Gudibanda, situated near Goribidnur is 93 Kms away from Bangalore. As it is situated at the southern foot of rock (bande), which is surmounted by temple (gudi), the town got the name Gudibanda. On the top of the big rock, there is a rock-cut shrine dedicated to Ahobala Narasimha, described as an Udbhavamurthy. Kasim Khan, a mughal fauzdar gave Gudibanda to Havali Baire Gowda on the capture of Doddaballapur. It was he who fortified the hill. This place is famous for the cultivation of paddy and sugarcane. In addition to the temple at the top of the hill, there are two basandis and ruins of fort.

This is an ideal destination for a day's trek. The 45 minutes to an hour walk up the hill is an fascinating tour through rings of fort walls, tunnels and dungeons. You can also try some bouldering and rock climbing.

Madhugiri is 110 Kms northwest of Bangalore. The town derives its name from Madhu-honey and giri-hill. The erection of this fine fort is ascribed to a local chief, Raja Hire Gouda. Hyder Ali later improved the fort. Hyder Ali, after the conquest of Bednur, kept the queen imprisoned in this fort until its capture by the Marathas in 1767 AD. Two temples with lofty towers are built in Dravidian Style of architecture. On the summit is a fine mosque with two minarets at the sides and ornamental parapet all round the roof. About 60 minutes of walk up the hill takes you through granaries, dome like structures for storing ghee and oil, powder magazines and springs. Madhugiri is just right for a day trip.

Kalwarbeta, 60 Kms from Bangalore, is one the hill forts amongst the Nandi Hill ranges. The dilapidated walls of Tipu's fort can be found today on steep Kalavara Betta

(Skandagiri), near the village of Kalavara History says this was a small but strong hill fort. It surrendered to British

troops on 19 October 1791. It remained in British hands until the peace treaty of 1792, which concluded of the third

Anglo-Mysore war. This is a tedious trek as the hill is precipitous and high. The trek starts from the Papagni

Temple at the foothills of Kalwara village. The fortress of Kalwarbeta is in full sight throughout the walk uphill. This

steep and fantastic trek through a maze of dense shrub is highly intriguing. Kalwarbeta is a teaser. Just as you reach

the fort wall contended that you have topped the hill, you see another ring of fort. No sooner you reach there; you

will find another majestic fort wall waiting to be conquered. There are six such series of stonewalls protecting an

abandoned temple on the hilltop. Kalwarbeta trek takes about 2 ½ - 3 hours. Carry plenty of water. High winds and

foggy weather is typical of Kalwarbeta.

Channagiri, 56 Kms from Bangalore, is one the hills amid the Nandi Hill ranges. The Nandi hills range has views across the plains and ideal for hiking. Channagiri hill is densely covered with shrubs. The trek starts from a temple near Sultanpet and the track goes behind the hill and culminates at the hilltop taking wholly about 2 ½ hours. A small temple within a fort stands in ruins. Hardly used by trekkers, Channagiri is secluded and suitable for teams to enjoy nature at its best. Expect strong winds as you near the top. Adjacent Nandi Hills and Kalwarbeta are in full view from Channagiri.

A nice drive from Bangalore and good trek makes Channagiri an ideal destination for a day trip. Do carry lots of water and beware of the naughty monkeys at the temple.

Savandurga is a place with a fort on a lofty mountain, about 60 km from Bangalore. The hill consists of two granite cliffs of 4000 feet tall and 13 kilometers (8 miles) in circumference, one called Bilibetta or white peak, another Karibetta or black peak.

It was a prominent place during the Hoysala rule. Over a period of time several rulers held this place. The hill fort on the top of the outcrop was erected in 1543 by Samanta Raya. It then came to Immadi Kempe Gowda of Bangalore until 1728 when it was captured by the Raja of Mysore from whom it passed to Haider Ali. During the Anglo-Mysore Wars of the late 18th century, Savandurg was the most forbidding of all the Tippu's hill forts in the area and hitherto deemed impregnable. Nevertheless, British troops under Cornwallis commanded by Lt Col Stuart mounted a successful assault against the fort in December 21, 1791.

The entire area is covered by verdure and serene atmosphere. This region is famous for medicinal plants and shrub forest. This is a paradise for the climbing enthusiasts. Climbers can scale sheer rock faces enduring up to grade 7. It is also good for a day's trek and camping at the foothill.

The second-highest peak in Kodagu (Coorg), Pushpagiri (1712 m) is a popular walk. 300 Kms from Bangalore, also called as Kumaraparvat, is a part of the Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary. Views of the semi evergreen and evergreen forests are regularly obscured by mist, regardless of the time of the year. The stream that runs down the valley bubbles with lot of springs. There is abundant variety of avifauna, insects and medicinal plants. Do explore the rich tradition and culture of the ever-hospitable natives.

The 8 km walk to the peak of Pushpagiri from Somwarpet is easier than the west side 14 km trek from Kukkesubramanya. This peak is significantly higher than the other two nearby peaks - Paruvatgiri (1571 m) and Kolkallu Betta (1482 m).

100 km from Bangalore, Kuntibetta near Mysore and very close to Padavpura. Kuntibetta is actually two hills and the one on the right is also called Bhimanabetta. The rocks are oddly enough- also known as the 'French Rock' as the French who assisted Tipu Sultan in his fight against the British, who stayed here. An interesting place to explore history! In the countryside, you get to sniff at pungent smell of the jaggery and a warm smile, some polite words and a small request will guarantee unlimited amounts of the fresh sugarcane juice more delicious than anything you've ever tasted. From the hilltop, the lake below shimmers in the sun, the twin humps of Chamundi hills at Mysore flirt with languorous clouds while Melkote's peak beckons in the distance. You can walk the hill on the right where the path here is rather well defined. But in terms of adventure, it is the hill on the left that is more interesting. Reaching the top here would take a lot longer as the way is rather hazy and unclear. But the strain and effort on this route is more than compensated by the spectacular views from the top.

Sultanpet to Nandi durg [hills] trek is a visual treat. 56 Kms from Bangalore, the trek starts at the foothills of Nandi Hills at Sultanpet. Use the stone steps that edges gently on the slopes to reach the summer rest house of Tippu Sultan situated inside the hilltop fortress.

Nandidurg is at an altitude of around 4800 feet amid the Nandi Hills near Bangalore. Captain Allan described the fort as "a strong spacious fortress, with the best constructed works of all the hill forts, and one of those by Tippoo deemed impregnable". It was captured by a detachment commanded by Major Gowdie on 18 October 1791. Control came at quite a cost: the casualties during the siege amounting to 110. The British found a plentiful stock of provisions and military stores here, but ceded the fort to Tipu after the Treaty of Seringapatam in 1792.

The leisurely trek takes about an hour and half. During monsoon, the route is richly decorated with wild Lantana shrubs. The beautiful clusters of pink and yellow lantana flowers and abundant bird life keeps the trek interesting and soothing. As you near the top, gusty winds howl past you. A few reminiscent stone doorways create a feel of timelessness. Though the Nandi top is crowded with picnickers, this day trek route is otherwise an isolated get-away destination. You can expect the top to be foggy between late dusk and dawn.

Gopalaswamy Betta also described by tradition as 'Kamaladri' situated over the summit of one of the chains of peaks in the Western Ghats is a beautiful hill resort in the Mysore District. The approach to the hill is by a motorable ghat road from the Hangala village at the foot of it. On the summit of the tall flat hill (about 4,769 feet MSL) is the Gopalaswamy temple. The garbhagiha has early Hoysala features and the doorway has decorative carvings. The main deity also called Himavat Gopalaswamy is described as installed by sage Gautama. It is a beautiful image, about one-and-half meters tall with an ornate prabhavali with the tree motif. The mukhamantapa of the temple is renovated with brick and mortar. Nearby the temple towards north is a forest bungalow. From this bungalow one can witness the panoramic surroundings for a considerable distance including Wynad in Kerala State. The hill is mostly shrouded in thick fog and hence the name 'Himavath Gopalaswamy Betta". The place is frequented by wild elephants, which sometimes enter the temple premises too. There are no permanent residents near the temple. The hill had a fortification all around and was called Bettadakote, but only meagre traces of it now remain.

A succession of dilapidated fort walls and a temple housing the statue of Linga and Nandi tells the tale of Sage Markandeya performing penance here for a long time.Though the ascent is tedious, the summit offers inquisitive 360° landscape views. The jabbing dry grass is an irritant in dry months and is challenging to discover the grass-covered route during the rains. Expect high winds and fog on the hilltop. 275 Kms from Bangalore, near Chickmagalur, Bababudangiri hills are heaven on earth in the Western Ghats. Luxuriant green grass, moss infested trees, sparkling waterfalls, rugged hills and pure air seems generously God gifted. The dense mist reduces the visibility to just a few meters. The wind almost blows you off the hill. Sometimes it appears as if the mountain has conspired with the rain and the wind and is trying to throw away the unwelcome intruders. Also the daytime temperature drastically falls from 34 C to below 10 C by nightfall.

There are very exceptional and challenging treks between Mullayanagiri, Bababudangiri and Kemmangundi. The trek from Kaimara to Mullayanagiri is steep. 9 hours drive from Bangalore to Mangalore and further 4 hrs from Mangalore, Kodachadri is a trekkers delight. Earlier known as the Kutachadri, is believed to be a piece of the Chandragiri mountain that fell off when Hanuman was carrying it to save wounded Lakshmana and indeed Kodachadri abounds in medicinal plants. About 64 different medicinal plants have been identified as of now. Since medicinal plant kuteja was available in this hill in abundance, it is also known as Kutejaparvatha in the puranas. There is a small temple complex known as Mookambika Moola Devi Kshetra. Bound by tradition this place is flocked by devotees from nearby villages and an annual fair takes place during the Mahashivarathri and Navarathri festivals.

From here, after an hour of uphill climb one can reach the Sarvaghna peeta, the summit of Kodachadri. The view of the Western Ghats from here is breathtaking. If the skies are clear, which is not most of the time, the distant Arabian Sea is also visible. The overlooking green valley offers a panoramic view of the Sharavathi River flowing like a silver stream down below. From the peak, a steep descent to the left in the thick bushes leads to a cave cut into the rocky cliff face. This is Chitramoola where Adi Shankara is said to have sat in penance. A perennial sweet water spring and the sight of an unconventional cave located in the wilderness, shrouded with mist, makes every step to Kodachadri worthwhile!

After a overnight Bus journey to Sringeri from Bangalore a 20+min local bus travel will take you to a place called Kigga. (frequency is 30+min approx) From kigga (the last stop for the bus) there are two ways .1: towards Sirimane waterfalls and 2: towards Narasimha Parvata.

Since this peak is inside the Kudremukh National Park you will be asked to pay some entry fee at the top. It is better you talk to a forest department official in kigga itself for any enquiry etc. It is 4.5hrs (awt- average walking time) from here to the peak. After kigga the water point is just before the summit of the peak. Fill your water bottles here. You are not allowed to camp inside the national park, though you can go to the next water point after the peak and camp there.

From the peak if you see in the north west direction you will find a tower of certain relay station of Aagumbe, your destination. If you see to a little right to that you will find a bald patch of significant area between the forest, this place is the paddy fields of the Mallandoor village. There is a big valley between Narasimha parvata and Mallandoor. Keeping this in mind as the destination for the next days trek the wild track begins going through the forest and across the valley. Though there is plenty of water in the valley , there is only one or two water points in between. This trek to the Mallandoor village is about 6-7hrs awt (if you don't get lost in the forest). You may not find any paths in the jungle. Even if you find them they are bound to mislead you.

(Plan B: instead of camping just after the Narasimha parvata, get down to the valley and camp there. This way you would have covered a good distance of the next days trek.) After the valley it is only climb uphill in the forest , so keep your eyes open as there is a good chance of getting lost. Take extra food items just in case and a good compass.

The next day you once you reach the village you can stay in the village school premises. From here it is 2.5+hrs awt walk to Agumbe. On the way you have to take deviation to go to the Barkana View point and Jogigundi. Ask a localite to guide you. The Barkana view point gives a splendid bird's-eye view of the Barkana falls and the great forest of the Western Ghats. Jogigundi is a place where a stream forms a waterfall. and good camping area. Now it s being littered allover.
