Why recycle?
Recycling helps to save the world's resources. There is a limit to the amount of oil from which we can make plastic, and aluminium ore to make drinks cans.
Resources that run out eventually are called 'finite resources'. Recycling materials saves finite resources for the future and also reduces the amount of rubbish which ends up in rubbish tips (also called landfill sites).
If no one recycled, we would eventually run out of finite resources and space to bury rubbish.

What can be recycled?
Nearly all the rubbish disposed of in dustbins can be recycled although some materials are easier to recycle than others (for example some types of plastic and shredded paper can be difficult to recycle).

Plastic Recycling
Did you know there are over 50 different types of plastics and a wide variety are used everyday? These materials are also usually very light which means that it is not always economically feasible for your local council to offer facilities for plastic recycling.
The cost of pick-up, storage and delivery far outweighs what local authorities can earn by taking plastics to be recycled - the only exception is drinks bottles, which are heavier than, say, yoghurt pots, and so are worth more.
In a survey by Recoup, the UK's household plastics recycling organisation, 75% of councils without a collection scheme blame the cost. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/3116318.stm accessed 6/1/11

Can shredded paper be recycled?
Shredded paper can be recycled, however not all local authorities will collect it. This is because shredded paper can affect the quality of recycled paper and make it weaker, also shredded paper can be difficult to handle causing maintenance problems at paper mills along with the risk of fires.
