1 Introduction

1.1 General ADP-ESPA / ADP-ESPA-U are devices to connect a Control and Indication Equipments (CIE) of fire detection and fire alarm systems (FAS / FDAS) to a telephone system (Telecommunication – TC) or a personal call system. Messages from the CIE will be saved in the interface device. According to the configuration alarm-, fault- and other messages will be sent to the appropriate TC-system / personal call system. Thus the staff can execute countermeasures to the danger early enough. By an individual programming the user can define which message is sent to which participant / pager of the system.

The serial communication between ADP-ESPA / ADP-ESPA-U and the call system via RS232 interface (galvanic isolated) based at the ESPA 4.4.4 protocol. The terminal clamps of the according interface are label with „ESPA“. The interface uses the signal lines Rx, Tx and GND.

ADP-ESPA and ADP-ESPA-U (universal version) are identical in function but differ in the hardware of the interface to the CIE interface:

• ADP-ESPA : with RS485 interface to CIE (galvanic isolated) • ADP-ESPA-U: with variable interface to CIE – plug in module interface (RS232, RS422, etc.)

In the following descriptions "ADP-ESPA" stand for both versions ADP-ESPA and ADP-ESPA-U !.

Power and CIE interface are to connect according the specific application – given with as separate documents !

When shipped the ADP-ESPA(-U) is pre-configured according the application version given with the ordering. Programming via USB is needed for special settings only, e.g. ESPA option etc.

This device is operating according to ESPA 4.4.4 pr otocol specification.

Other devices with ESPA-interfaces, e.g. paging systems of different manufacturer, can have different behaviour. Therefore it is absolute necessary to verify the communication between fire alarm panel via ESPA-interface to the telephone system or paging system. For this reason a complete test procedure has to be performed for validation!

3.6 Connection ADP-ESPA(-U) with TC-/Call-system vi a RS422-Adapter RS232 connections are terminated to a maximum of 15 m cable length. For a longer distance between ADP-ESPA and TC-/Call-system an interface adapters will be used to convert connections from standard RS232 to RS422 and reverse. When the TC-/Call-system is equipped with RS422 interface the reverse adapter RS422 to RS232 is not required.

Note: In most cases a galvanic isolation of the interface is required !

The adapter ADP-PRS-422 is designed to convert RS232 and another (e.g. RS422) signal standards vice versa. The RS232 interface is performed as a 9-pin D-Sub male connector. The other interface connector is carried out as plug-in clamps. For better handling the PCB is placed at a carrier plate for DIN rail mounting.

Figure 8 : ADP-PRS-422 placed at carrier plate (Ph oenix Contact)

Normally two adapters are needed for a complete RS232 – RS422 – RS232 connection. The remote adapter must have a RS232-opto interface module for galvanic isolation.

3.7 Power-on behavior / hints for start-up procedur e The communication to the control an indication equipment (CIE) starts directly on Power-On or Reset. Communication on the output side to the ESPA starts 5 seconds later. If the initialization is successful, the configuration is without failure and the communication between CIE and ESPA is correct, the green LED-3 flashes with 2 sec break.

In case of any fault or malfunction at the interface "BMZ" (wrong wiring, wrong or no communication) LED 2 (yellow) will show an error code.

When ESPA interface doesn't work (TC-/Call-system) LED 3 (green) will light permanent.

If supervision of ESPA interface is activated the communication with the CIE will be interrupted and the red LED lights permanent.

With the ADP-ESPA is wether connected to the CIE nor to the TC-/Call-system both error LED – LED 2 (yellow) and LED 3 (green) will light permanent.

Fatal errors (e.g. wrong configuration) are signalised by LED 1 (red). This LED will blink with 1 sec interval.

When connecting the USB interface with a PC or Notebook the device will enter the programming mode automatically. The diagnostic LED will display a cyclic light sequence green/yellow/red yellow/red red.

While firmware updated is running LED 3 (green) will cyclic blink short 3 times followed by a break.

Analysis logic for rules and exclusions:

Any rule is a stand-alone rule and effects one ESPA output considering their exclusions.

All rules regarding an event are considered.

ESPA outputs are added when more than one rule are applied.

If there are more than one exclusion for one rule exist the most particular exclusion regarding the event will be applied.

Exclusions are applied only when the rule itself is applied regarding the event.

Exclusions can prevent an ESPA output or if applicable change a rule.

The menu „Setup ESPA Preferences“ offers settings for general behaviour of the ADP-ESPA module and influence the structure of text messages:

The field „Text rule“ is used to select the parts of the complete text message to transmit to the pager. Place holder can be inserted as well as any pre-defined text parts. Click the button "Edit" get the dialogue "Edit text rule.." and adjust the message format by handling the text formatting components.

4.5 ESPA-Tool for testing the interface / connectio n

4.5.1 General information and connection

Before connecting the ADP-ESPA to the TC- / Call-System the ESPA interface can be tested with the PC or notebook by using the ESPA-Tool. This Tool (ESPA_Tool.exe) stored at the CD included in delivery.

The program simulates the communication according ESPA-4.4.4 standard via RS232 interface. Install a connection between PC / notebook and ADP-ESPA device.

Call the ESPA simulator tool (no installation required) for testing the communication. The buttons "Start" / "Stop" enable / disable the communication that is shown in the terminal window.

4.5.2 ESPA 4.4.4 protocol / message transfer

All characters are ASCII characters (printable chars). Control chars (values 1-31 = 0x01-0x1F) are displayed with angle brackets.

The ESPA Tool (Simulation software) transmits the quit control chars <EOT>, <ACK> and <NAK> and these "answers" will be displayed as "eot" / "ack" / "nak". Using lowercase letter for controls signifies the data being transmitted by the ESPA receiver (PC / notebook). Message transfer :

The following example shows the data flow: polling, select and message transfer. There are both messages "coming" and "going" with differences in the record '4' and record '6' displayed.

record '4' = "call type" : coming '3' = standard call going '1' = reset call record '6' = "priority" : coming '1' = alarm (emergency) going '3' = normal

Polling – no event / message pending :

Polling sequence 2<ENQ> (supervision of connection)

In normal state the connection will be supervised byte cyclic polling. ADP-ESPA send address "2" followed by control char "enquiry" = <ENQ>. This will be answered by the receiver with "eot" (release bus). If no answer was received the ADP-ESPA transmit <EOT> followed byte the next polling sequence. Event / message pending :

Select sequence 1<ENQ>2<ENQ>

This select sequence is to answer by the receiver station with "ack" (acknowledge = ready to receive). If select is acknowledged ADP-ESPA send the message that is also to quit with "ack" by the receiver station. ADP-ESPA terminates transmission with <EOT>. Message format :

<SOH> Header <STX> data-id <US> data … <R S> data-id <US> data <ETX> CC

The message starts with "Start of header" <STX>, the header, "Start of text" <STX> and is terminated by "End of text" <ETX> followed by the checksum CC. The data between <STX> and <ETX> consist of one or more records to complete the message. Records are separated by record separators <RS>. Each record has a record type identifier followed by the unit separator <US> and the record data.
