PSYCH:OPHIARMACOLOGYSymposium at the December 1954 AAAS Berkeley Meeting

Publication No. 42 of the American Association for the Advancement of Science

Unlike earlier drugs that clouded the consciousness of the mental patient or even rendered him unconscious, chlor-promazine and reserpine "have the unusual property of sedating the patient, reducing his overactivity, and allaying hisanxiety, while at the same time he remains fully conscious and thus far more amenable to the various other therapeuticapproaches of a psychological nature. Add to this the facts that the drugs are almost free from untoward side effects, and that they are non-addictive, and it is easy to see why an extraordinary enthusiasm over their possibilities has beenexhibited." (W. Overholser)

This first major conference on the use of chlorpromazine, reserpine, and related drugs covers treatment of schizo-phrenia, psychoneuroses, manic depression, and chronic alcoholism in children, adolescents, and adults of both sexes.

Methods of treatment, side effects, results, and conclusions are presented with case histories and proper cautions aboutnot considering these new drugs panaceas. Discussions of the papers introduce the valuable experience and observationsof additional leaders in the field.

This volume will be of the utmost importance to psychiatrists, neurologists, clinical psychologists, physiologists, pharmacologists, and biochemists.

This versatile counter offers unusual flexibility, because its highly unusual design permitshighly efficient alpha, beta, or gamma countingwith easy interchangeability. Samples may beinserted or changed without introducingspurious counts or making it necessary toreduce high voltage.

Correct sample position is assured by an auto-matic stop. The geometry of sample andsensitive crystal is widely variable, andreproducible to .001 inch by a calibratedindication which may be locked in place ifdesired Flat samples of alphas or low energybetas are held close to the phosphor formaximum efficiency.

This is one of many instruments- which NRDoffers for your radioisotope laboratory. Write Ifor our general catalag of counters, scalers-,and accessorFes.

PAPER ELECTROPHORESIS

300-911

PAPER ELECTROPHORESIS ASSEMBLY,Spinco Model R. For reproducible separation andquantitative measurement of electromigratoryserum components, affording high resolution anduniformity of migration. Consisting of a Durrumtype migration cell, power supply for closely con-trolled power input, and the Analytrol-a den-sitometer specially designed and calibrated forblood serum analysis, and which automaticallyscans, plots and integrates dry paper strips in2 to 3 minutes.

Advantages are: the small size of the cell; a

completely developed and tested system for bloodserum proteins; and a densitometer which com-pensates, by built-in correction factors, fordeviations otherwise introduced by interpreta-tion of uncorrected absorbance measurements ofdye density on paper strips.Electrophoresis Cell, Durrum Type. Processes simultaneouslyeight paper strips, conveniently placed on and removed from afolding Nylon rack. Cell is constructed of transparent metha-crylate plastic, with full length baffled buffer reservoirs andplatinum electrodes. Serum samples are evenly distributed ina uniform stripe at the apex of the paper strips, using the specialapplicator. Electrical connection to the strips is establishedabove the liquid level of the buffer in each reservoir throughhorizontal wicks, which eliminates subsequent bloE4ting or

trimming of the strips with consequent disturbance of themigration pattern. After the migration period, the racks can beunfolded to horizontal position and placed directly in thedrying oven, without handling the wet strips.

Duostat Power Supply. Range 0 to 500 volts. With connectionsfor use with two cells. Provides automatically regulated powerinput, either constant-current or constant-voltage. Accidentalcontact with output-voltage circuit is prevented as current isnot supplied until cover of cell is safely in position and the elec-tro-mechanical interlock is closed.

More detailed information sent upon request.

I LABORATORY APPARATUS

Analytrol (Densitometer). A curve-drawing integrator whichautomatically scans finished paper strips in two to threeminutes. Oiling of strips to render them translucent is un-necessary. Converts the color density pattern into a pen drawnconcentration curve, simultaneously making a saw-toothintegration tracing. Provides an accurate measurement of thearea under each peak, which area is quantitatively related to theconcentration of the component defined by the curve.
