  • Intergraph, a high-tech software company in Huntsville, Alabama needed a new headquarters facility to reflect its smaller size, increasingly collabo-rative culture, and cutting-edge technology. Cooper Carry was asked to transform Intergraphs existing workplace spread across 20 buildings into an integrated work community by designing a state-of-the-art five story building.

The layout is designed to promote productivity and collaboration between Intergraphs more than 1,000 employees in the building. Scattered throughout the building are dedicated areas to encourage impromptu meetings and conversations between co-workers and clients and even in some instances provide a quiet respite for reflection and thought. The state-of-the-art facility also features the MegaBytes Caf, a barista coffee bar, videoconferencing rooms, binary clocks on every floor, more than 1,000 parking spaces along with charging stations for electric vehicles, a beautiful lake stocked with fish, and more.

Cooper Carry provided full services for the $58 mil-lion facility including workplace strategy, programming, and change management consultation along with the architecture, interior design, landscape architecture and environmental graphics. The firm has also de-signed a master plan for the campus, which could in the future feature 60,000 square feet of retail build-ings, 117,000 square feet of entertainment facilities and 695,000 square feet of additional market-rate office space.

The building is 232,000 square feet, 500 feet long, twice the length of a conventional office building. More than 5,500 gallons of paint were used on the project. It takes a lot of carpet to keep feet comfortable the crew laid 26,000 square yards. The construction crew consisted of 225 highly skilled technicians, carpenters, electricians and painters. The lobby floor is constructed of end-grain wood, whose use dates back to late 1800s. Each piece is made by continuously cross cutting or slicing logs into blocks that expose the trees annual growth rings. To re-flect Intergraphs global presence, the conference rooms on the lobby level have been named North America, South America, Australia, Europe and Asia. Another key to creating a collaborative environment is the innovative Main Street concept, a pathway connecting the north and south wings of the building. Daylight is not only conducive to creativity, it also saves energy. Thus, all workstations have been designed in close proximity to the exterior windows and daylight exposure. There are 1,020 parking spaces and a few charging stations for electric cars. The lake, with perimeter lighting, is 10 feet deep and contains bass, carp and catfish. The linear canopy on the front of the building is designed to draw the eyes of arriving visitors up the face of the building to the Intergraph and Hexagon logos. The window blinds have pinhole perforations that not only allow one to see outside, but also permit natural light to enter the space even when the blinds are closed. The employee recreation area is available 24/7. An op-portunity for innovative minds to take a mental break, it is furnished with gaming equipment inside and out on the terrace. Buzzy blinds, the free-standing fabric vertical blinds that surround many of the areas where teams can hold impromptu meetings and collaborate on that next great idea, provide open and semi-private options for meetings. Trying to figure out that odd assortment of red disks on the walls in the restroom alcoves? Its a binary clock, which displays traditional sexagesimal time* in a binary format. Another key to creating a collaborative en-vironment is the innovative Main Street concept, a path-way connecting the north and south wings of the building.
