REWORK

CPUT 2011: Interim Submission 3Community Hub

Main idea? Look in anthropometrics, the idea of power is good, but taking the logo so literally into the form is a bit problematic.

Nice model - why masonry right in middle?

Find more good architectural technological precedent

Feedback on hub work:

Phase 3:

My Point of view• Provide space for the less extroverted person to enjoy, a space

which anyone can enjoy but caters for those quieter people as well – a semi-private space.

“Not cut off from the world,

but the world should not intercept your ‘bubble’ unless you choose for it to do so”.

Functional precedent 2:The meeting place,

little hunter street, Sydney, Australia

• Client: Sydney City Council

• Architect/s: ASPECT studios

Induced communication: people have to negotiate through a laneway by communicating with people like themselves that are traveling in the opposite direction.

The social aspect of watching and communicating with people will increase positive contact with a sense of play. Note how color“lightens” the mood, and how the screen filters movement.

Functional precedent 3:The meeting place (deck),

Old Mac Daddy, Grabouw, Cape Town

To me, this is the most relevant of my functional precedent. Throughout this project I have had the idea of ‘meeting’ in my head, and have yet to find a way to illustrate my idea.

My idea/point of view of meeting:

Intimate, formal, undisturbed communication, time, valuable.

One must be able to meet a person/group of people and be undisturbed by anything irrelevant to the function of that meeting. For example: we met on the deck looking over the lake at Old Mac Daddy –immediately everyone knew where to go, where they wanted to be and assumed a preferable position, ready for the guest speakers speech. That was formal meeting.

When there were fewer people, the deck became a more private, intimate space, defined by its boundaries and context, but still open to the rest of the world yet it remained undisturbed. A person could meet with another and converse privately spending time together, or meet with a small group for desired company. This is a more intimate type of meeting, yet still formal in a sense.

Technological precedent 2:The Pole Yard,

Noordhoek, Cape Town

This is the best technological precedent any student could wish for. From hundreds of examples of joinery to physically seeing gum poles being cut, machined and stored, even the staff making the furnishings.

Unfortunately I find it difficult to sketch technology, simply because I grew up around it. From building the first school I attended (2 storey gum pole classroom in a forest) to daily exposure to structural systems and ideas, its all in my head and when asked to sketch technology I have a block because its all first nature and I assume everyone should know it. This however is wrong, and with this precedent I shall display what is in my mind and thereafter sketch the joinery and structural system I intend on using.

Design DevelopmentThe first concept was based on an idea purely from form which integrated function

thereafter. This next concept is using the same main idea, but centered around function, feeling and experience which form will follow.

First: Taking the shape of the power symbol was because of the lack of informants for the plan.

Second: The service core in the center was for even Wi-Fi connection strength but it interrupted movement.

Third: The main idea is meeting. No more. No less.

Fourth: The structure was too enclosed, too complex for no functional reason.

With all of this said, what shall now be foreseen are explanatory sketches which will completely clarify my hub design.
