THE PROJECT CONCEPT. AS FUTURE HOTELIERS, WE NEED TO BE AWARE OF NEW TRENDS, ECO-FRIENDLY TOURISM
AND SUSTAINABILITY. WE DISCOVERED LOHAS WHICH STANDS FOR LIFESTYLES OF HEALTH AND SUSTAINABILITY, A MARKET SEGMENT
FOCUSING ON HEALTH AND FITNESS, THE ENVIRONMENT, PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT, SUSTAINABLE LIVING, AND SOCIAL

WITH THIS IDEA IN MIND WE CREATED A UNIQUE CONCEPT: BRING NATURE INSIDE.
THE MAIN AIM IS TO CREATE A HEALTHY AND NATURAL ENVIRONMENT COMBINED WITH THE FITNESS ATMOSPHERE OF THE TENNISOTEL
IN ORDER TO SATISFY DEMANDING GUESTS PUTTING SPECIAL ATTENTION ON SUSTAINABILITY AND THE ENVIRONMENT.

NATURE. INSIDE.
THE LOCATION. UNDER THE “OUEST LAUSANNOIS” DEVELOPMENT PLAN, THE AREA IN WHICH OUR PROJECT IS LOCATED, “SECTEUR ARC-EN-CIEL” IN
CRISSIER, IS SET TO BECOME AN ATTRACTIVE AREA FOR BUSINESSES, OFFICES AND RETAILING. EASILY ACCESSIBLE DUE TO A TRAMWAY
LINE ALONG THE BOULEVARD ARC-EN-CIEL, AS WELL AS CONVENIENT CFF CONNECTIONS, THE HOTEL AND TENNIS COURTS WILL BE
IDEALLY LOCATED TO ATTRACT GUESTS FROM THE NEIGHBOURING BUSINESSES. INCORPORATING GREEN SPACES IN THE FORM OF PARKS
AND FORESTS FOR THE LOCAL FLORA AND FAUNA, THE DEVELOPMENT OF THIS AREA OF LAUSANNE, WHICH IS CURRENTLY AN
INDUSTRIAL AREA, WILL ENCOURAGE SUSTAINABILITY THANKS TO A NETWORK OF PEDESTRIAN ZONES AND CYCLE LANES.
WE BELIEVE THAT INCORPORATING THE CONCEPT OF “BRINGING NATURE INSIDE” AND VARIOUS SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES INTO OUR
PROJECT, WILL NOT ONLY APPEAL TO OUR TARGET MARKET, BUT ALSO FIT IN SEAMLESSLY WITH THE ENVIRONMENT IN WHICH THE
PROJECT IS LOCATED. (WWW.OUEST-LAUSANNOIS.CH)
THE COLOUR CONCEPT. GETTING THE
COLOURS RIGHT IS FUNDAMENTAL. BY CHOOSING THE NATURAL
COLOUR SYSTEM (NCS) WE ARE ENSURING LONG-TERM QUALITY.
INDEED, NCS IS THE MOST ACCURATE COLOUR SYSTEM IN THE
WORLD WITH SAMPLES RARELY EXPERIENCING ANY COLOUR SHIFT
FROM EACH OTHER OR THE MASTER STANDARDS. PLUS, HANDLED
CORRECTLY, NCS COLOUR SAMPLES HAVE A LIFESPAN OF AT LEAST
TEN YEARS AND ARE NOT AFFECTED BY FADING. (QUALITY
MANAGEMENT, N.D.).
FOLLOWING OUR CONCEPT OF BRINGING NATURE INDOORS AND
PROVIDING OUR CUSTOMERS WITH A RELAXING, COMFORTABLE
AND SIMPLE ATMOSPHERE, IT WAS DECIDED TO FOCUS MAINLY
COLOURS WHICH WILL REMIND OUR CLIENTS OF NATURE. A
PALETTE OF GREENS, BROWNS AND WHITE (NCS S 0502 G) WAS
CHOSEN IN THIS SPIRIT AND, AS A CONTRASTING COLOUR TO THE
GREEN, TYRIAN PURPLE (NCS S 5040 R30B) WILL BE INTRODUCED
IN CERTAIN ELEMENTS TO PROVIDE A VISUALLY STIMULATING AND
SURPRISING ENVIRONMENT. GREEN WILL PROVIDE A FEELING OF
FRESHNESS AND TRANQUILITY, WHILE THE BROWN WILL ADD
STRENGTH AND WARMTH. THE MAIN AIM IS TO HAVE A CALMING
AND RELATIVELY NEUTRAL BACKGROUND, ACCENTUATED BY POPS
OF COLOUR.

THE FLOORING. WALNUT WAS CHOSEN FOR THE FLOOR, THE WOOD GIVING AN AIR OF
SIMPLICITY AND NATURE TO THE DESIGN. WALNUT IS AN IDEAL CHOICE FOR FLOORING AS ITS COMPLEX
GRAIN PATTERNS AND EXCEPTIONAL FORTITUDE MAKE IT BOTH ATTRACTIVE AND DURABLE. THE SAME
FLOORING IS USED THROUGHOUT THE PROJECT – FROM THE ENTRANCE TO THE RESTAURANT – TO LINK
THE DIFFERENT ROOMS AND GIVE CONTINUITY AND COHERENCE TO THE DESIGN. HOWEVER, EXTRA COST
OF THIS HIGH-QUALITY FLOORING MUST BE CONSIDERED WHEN BUDGETING.

THE VERTICAL SURFACES. VAST EXPANSES OF GLASS
JUXTAPOSED TO CLEAN WHITE WALLS BOTH IN BAR AND IN THE RESTAURANT,
CREATE A SOOTHING AND RELAXING ATHMOSPHERE. THE WALLS WILL BE
PAINTED NCS S 0502 G, WHITE WITH A VERY SLIGHT GREEN TINGE.
AS A MAIN SOUNDTRAP IN THE LOBBY/BAR, AN ENTIRE WALL WILL BE
WALLPAPERED, ABSORBING THE NOISE. THE WALLPAPER IS FROM DESIGNERS
GUILD (NASH WALLCOVERINGS P514/02 GLYNDE) IN TEAL. FURTHER
SOUNDTRAPS IN THIS AREA WILL BE THE SOFT FURNISHINGS SUCH AS SOFAS
AND ARMCHAIRS.
IN THE RESTAURANT, “CLOUDS” WILL BE MOUNTED ON THE WALL. CLOUDS IS
A COLOURFUL, INNOVATIVE AND INDIVIDUAL INTERIOR DESIGN ELEMENT
WHICH ACTS AS A SOUNDTRAP. DESIGNED BY RONAN AND ERWAN
BOUROULLEC, KVADRAT: CLOUDS IS AN INTERDIGITATED SYSTEM MADE OF
TEXTILE MODULES WHICH CAN BE MOUNTED AS INSTALLATION AT THE WALL
OR CEILING. THE MODULES ARE MADE OF SINGLE ELEMENTS AND ARE PUT
TOGETHER WITH RUBBER BANDS AND CREATE AN UNUSUAL, THREE-
DIMENSIONAL EFFECT (CLOUDS, N.D.).
FURTHER INCORPORATING NATURE AND THE DIFFERENT TONES OF GREEN
INTO THE RESTAURANT IS A BESPOKE AND ORIGINAL HI DEFINITION PHOTO
TRANSFORMED INTO FULLY WASHABLE WALLPAPER, COVERING AN ENTIRE
WALL (BESPOKE PHOTO WALLPAPER, N.D.).
THE ENTRANCE. AS THERE IS A LOT OF GLASS INVOLVED IN OUR CONCEPT WE THOUGHT THAT PUTTING A WALL IN THE
HALLWAY FOR THE ENTRANCE WOULD BE COUNTER ACTING WITH THE REST OF THE BUILDING. THEREFORE WE DECIDED TO KEEP THE
GLASS. THIS WAY THE HALLWAY SEEMS BIGGER AND MORE INVITING. THE WALL ON THE OTHER HAND WILL HAVE a WAVE DESIGN. THIS,
IN ADDITION TO A LINE OF GREEN CARPET, WILL LEAD GUESTS TO THE RECEPTION, BAR AND RESTAURANT. FURTHERMORE, THE WAVE
GIVES THE CUSTOMERS A FIRST IMPRESSION OF OUR CONCEPT AS GIVING A VIBE OF ZEN AND RELAXING ATTITUDE. THE SAME BENCHES AS THE RESTAURANT (SEE RESTAURANT FURNITURE) WILL ALLOW VISITORS TO WATCH THE GAMES BEFORE COMING
TO THE RESTAURANT. BEHIND THESE BENCHES, BAMBOO PLANTS WILL ENHANCE THE ENTRANCE AND GIVE THOSE WATCHING THE GAME A
BIT OF PRIVACY.
LIGHTING.
BIG, ATTENTION-GRABBING, LIGHTS HANGING FROM
THE CEILING INCREASE THE LIGHT OF THE HALLWAY TO
MAKE IT MORE ATTRACTIVE AND WELCOMING TO THE
GUESTS.
THE BAR CONCEPT. WE DECIDED THAT THE
BAR COUNTER WOULD BE WHITE, IN ORDER TO HAVE A LIGHT
“SPOT” WITHIN THE BAR AREA. OUR MAIN BAR INSPIRATION
COMES FROM THE CAFÉ IPANEMA IN MAASTRICHT.
FOLLOWING OUR NATURAL CONCEPT, THE GREEN BAR STOOLS
TOPS, REFLECTED BY THE GREEN HIGHLIGHTS IN AND AROUND
THE BAR, REPRESENT LITTLE ISLES TO RELAX WITH A COLD
BEVERAGE.
AS THE RESTAURANT AND THE BAR ARE CONNECTED BY AN
ARCH, TO KEEP A CERTAIN FLUIDITY AND TOGETHERNESS IN OUR
CONCEPT, WE DECIDED TO KEEP THE WALNUT FLOOR
THROUGHOUT. THIS WILL CREATE A CONNECTION BETWEEN THE
SPACES. FURTHERMORE, TO GIVE OUR ACTIVE, SPORTY GUESTS
THE POSSIBILITY TO ENJOY THE OPEN VIEW ON THE TENNIS
COURTS, ISLANDS OF COMFORTABLE ARMCHAIRS AND COUCHES
ARE PLACED ALONG THE GLASS WALL.
THE BAR FURNITURE AND DECORATION. IN ORDER TO SATISFY ALL OUR GUESTS, WE WERE LOOKING
FOR ARMCHAIRS WITH AN ADEQUATE HEIGHT FOR ELDERLY, COMFORTABLE SEATING FOR BUSINESS TRAVELERS AND EASY TO CLEAN
MATERIAL FOR OUR YOUNGER CUSTOMERS. THE CHAIRS ARE ALSO COMFORTABLY UPHOLSTERED TO PROVIDE A RELAXING SEATING
EXPERIENCE FOR FRIENDS OR RELATIVES OF THE TENNIS PLAYERS WHO WILL BE WATCHING THEM FROM THE BAR, THANKS TO THE LARGE
GLASS WALL OVERLOOKING THE TENNIS COURTS. THESE ARMCHAIRS COME FROM HILLCROSS FURNITURE.
THE SMALL SQUARE WHITE TABLES (FOR EXAMPLE INEXPENSIVE ONES FROM IKEA) FIT WITH OUR SIMPLE AND STRAIGHT LINE DESIGN
THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE BAR.
THE BAR STOOLS, ALSO FROM HILLCROSS FURNITURE, HAVE A GREEN TOP WHICH REFLECTS YET AGAIN OUR GREEN, NATURAL CONCEPT.
NATURE IS ALSO BROUGHT INDOORS THANKS TO THE SQUARE GLASS VASES FILLED WITH VIVID GREEN MOSS SCATTERED AROUND THE
BAR, ALONG WITH CANDLES, JUST AS IN THE RESTAURANT (SEE THE RESTAURANT DECORATION)
THE BAR WALLS AND LIGHTING. THE WALL BETWEEN
THE BAR AND THE RESTAURANT IS COVERED IN DESIGNERS GUILD WALLPAPER
AND WILL FUNCTION AS A SOUNDTRAP, VITAL IN AN ANIMATED BAR. IN
ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONCEPT, ITS COLOUR ERRADIATES NATURALNESS,
CALMNESS AND SIMPLICITY AND THE TEXTURE OF THIS WALLPAPER IS ROUGH AND
THE WOVEN STRANDS ARE CLEARLY VISIBLE.
THROUGH THE GLASS WALLS TOWARDS THE TENNIS COURTS AND THE TERRACE,
THE BAR IS ALREADY FLOODED WITH DAYLIGHT, THEREFORE WE DECIDED TO
INCORPORATE SPOTLIGHTS IN THE CEILING, WITH AN ADJUSTABLE DIMMER
SWITCH, IN ORDER TO AVOID ARTIFICIAL AND AGGRESSIVE LIGHTING. IN
ADDITION, THE ABUNDANCE OF NATURAL LIGHT WILL HELP US BE MORE
SUSTAINABLE AND LOWER OUR LIGHTING COSTS.
ABOVE THE BAR COUNTER, PENDANT LIGHTS WILL HANG FROM THE CEILING TO
PROVIDE A DIFFERENT LEVEL OF LIGHT.
THESE “JACKIE O” PENDANTS FROM CATELLANI AND SMITH ARE FROM THEIR
“ECO-LOGIC” COLLECTION, WHICH USES LED TECHNOLOGY, PRESENTLY
CONSIDERED THE MOST ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY LIGHTING SOLUTION.
THEREFORE, NOT ONLY DO THEY ADD AN POINT OF INTEREST AROUND THE BAR,
BUT THEY ARE ALSO IN LINE WITH OUR SUSTAINABLE CONCEPT.
THE CONCIERGE AREA CONCEPT. IN ORDER TO COMBINE NATURALNESS AND MODERNITY, WE DECIDED TO
OFFER A MORE PERSONALIZED CHECK-IN/OUT PROCESS WHICH ELIMINATES THE RELIANCE ON PAPER, THROUGH THE IPAD. THE
PORTABILITY, LARGE SCREEN AND LONG BATTERY LIFE OF THE IPAD MAKES IT A VERSATILE AND UNIQUELY SUITED TOOL FOR THE WORLD
OF HOSPITALITY.
RECEPTION STAFF WILL WELCOME GUESTS AND CHECK THEM IN WHEREVER IS MORE CONVENIENT FOR THEM: WHILE ENJOYING A DRINK
AT THE BAR, ON THE WAY TO THEIR ROOM OR EVEN IN THEIR ROOMS. THROUGH THIS, GUESTS CAN AVOID THE TYPICAL LONG QUEUES
AND CHECK IN AND OUT IN A RELAXED AND COMFORTABLE ATMOSPHERE, AWAY FROM THE FORMAL RECEPTION COUNTER, WHICH WILL
E REPLACED BY A TWO-PARTED CONCIERGE DESK.
THIS ALLOWS US TO UNBURDEN THE LOBBY, WHILE GUESTS WILL STILL HAVE A REFERENCE PLACE FOR REQUESTS OR PROBLEMS. HAVING
THE CHECK-IN AREA IN THE SAME ROOM AS THE BAR, WE DIFFERENTIATED THE RECEPTION AREA THANKS TO A LIVING WALL OF BAMBOO
AND A COZY SOFA.
THE RESTAURANT INSPIRATION. THE RESTAURANT WAS MAINLY INSPIRED BY NAT, A FINE BIO FOOD FAST
FOOD RESTAURANT IN HAMBURG, DESIGNED BY EINS:EINS ARCHITECTS (PROJEKTE, N.D.) AND WHICH INCORPORATES MOTIVES FROM
NATURE MADE ABSTRACT; WITH “THE MAIN CONTRADICTION OF A “NATURAL” RESTAURANT IN AN ARTIFICIAL URBAN ENVIRONMENT
BECOMING THE CORE OF THE DESIGN. THIS IS REFLECTED IN THE CONTRAST BETWEEN NATURAL FORM AND DISCIPLINED, GEOMETRIC
ABSTRACTION, AS WELL AS IN THE COMING TOGETHER OF NEARLY DEMATERIALIZED AND OVERLY TACTILE, SENSUOUS SURFACES” (NAT.
FINE BIO FOOD RESTAURANT INTERIOR BY EINS:EINS ARCHITECTS, 2010). THIS INSPIRED OUR COLOR AND FURNISHING CHOICES AND
IS, MOST IMPORTANTLY, THE SOURCE OF THE WALL PAINTING IDEA. THE RESTAURANT WILL SERVE LIGHT HEALTHY LUNCHES SUCH AS A
VARIETY OF SALADS WITH SEASONAL AND LOCAL INGREDIENTS, BRUSCHETTAS AND WARM AND COLD SANDWICHES.
THE RESTAURANT CONCEPT. TWO WALLS WILL BE LARGE BAY WINDOWS. THE 22M EXPANSE OF GLASS WILL
MOUNTED ON A FULLY ELECTRICAL STRUCTURE WHICH WILL ALLOW THE WINDOWS TO BE AUTOMATICALLY LOWERED INTO THE FLOOR,
ALLOWING THE RESTAURANT TO BE COMPLETELY OPENED DURING THE WARM SUMMER MONTHS. THE SECOND WALL OF GLASS WILL
NOT BE OPENABLE IN ORDER TO AVOID DRAFTS. THE RESTAURANT IS ARRANGED AROUND THE MAIN FOCAL POINT WHICH IS THE
RECTANGULAR, GLASS-ENCLOSED, INDOOR GARDEN. GUESTS WILL BE ABLE TO EXPERIENCE NATURE FROM WITHIN THE RESTAURANT,
FOLLOWING THE CHANGING SEASONS ON THE TREES WHICH WILL PROVIDE AN EVER-CHANGING BACKDROP. ADDITIONALLY, A LIVING-
BAMBOO PARTITION WILL SHIELD OUR CUSTOMERS
FROM THE KITCHEN AND SERVICE AREA. THE VARIOUS CONTRASTING COLOURED BENCHES OFFER A VISUALLY STIMULATING ELEMENT AS
WELL AS INCREASED GUEST COMFORT WHILE EMPHASISING THE COZY, YET FUNCTIONAL AND CONVIVIAL ASPECT OF THE DESIGN. THE
TABLES ARE ARRANGED IN SEPARATE ISLANDS TO CLEARLY DELIMIT THE SPACE OF THE RESTAURANT AND ADD SOLIDITY AND COHERENCE,
WITH ALLEYS BETWEEN THE TABLES. JUST AS IN OUR INSPIRATION BELOW, THE GUESTS SEATED AT THE TABLES WITH BENCHES WILL BE
FACING ANOTHER DIRECTION THAN GUESTS SEATED AT THE TABLES OPPOSITE, OFFERING GREATER GUEST PRIVACY. THE TABLES ARE
SIMPLY SET UP, WITH ONLY A NAPKIN, KNIFE AND FORK AND A WATER GLASS, SIMPLIFYING THE SERVICE STAFF’S WORK.
THE FURNITURE BEING RELATIVELY NEUTRAL, THE DECORATIONS WILL PROVIDE A POP OF COLOUR AND INTEREST, FOLLOWING OUR
COLOUR CONCEPT OF HAVING DIFFERENT TONES OF GREEN, ONCE AGAIN REFLECTING NATURE.
THE RESTAURANT LIGHTING. IT WAS DECIDED TO CAPITALISE ON THE RESTAURANT’S NATURAL
ILLUMINATION, WITH DAYLIGHT CAPTURED DIRECTLY FROM THE LARGE WINDOWS AND INDOOR GARDEN AS WELL AS ITS REFLECTION
OFF THE WHITE WALLS AND CEILINGS. THIS WILL NOT ONLY EMPHASISE THE NATURAL FEEL OF THE DESIGN, BUT ALSO LOWER LIGHTING
COSTS BY MAXIMISING NATURAL LIGHT.
IN THE EVENING AND ON DREARY DAYS DOWNLIGHTS IN THE FORM OF RECESSED LIGHTING WILL HELP CREATE A SOFT GLOW THAT ADDS
AMBIENCE. TO ACHIEVE DIFFERENT LEVELS OF LIGHT, VARIOUS CANDLES ARE SET ON TABLES. THE RECESSED LIGHTS ARE DISCREET AND
WILL FADE AWAY INTO THE CEILING AND, MOST CRUCIALLY, WILL BE ACTIVATED BY A DIMMER SWITCH TO BE ABLE TO ADJUST THE
MOOD ACCORDING TO THE OCCASION. THE CHOSEN RECESSED LIGHTING HAS THE ADVANTAGE OF A 25° TILT AND A 360° ROTATION,
ALLOWING A VERSATILE AND FLEXIBLE USE OF THE SPACE AND ADJUSTABLE LIGHTING. ENERGY EFFICIENT LIGHT BULBS AND AN
ABUNDANCE OF DAYLIGHT WILL ALLOW THE RESTAURANT TO CONSERVE ENERGY AND BE MORE SUSTAINABLE, FOLLOWING THE LOHAS
TREND.
THE RESTAURANT FURNITURE. THE TABLES ARE SQUARE
(80CM X 80CM) TO PROVIDE MORE FLEXIBILITY: THEY CAN BE PUSHED TOGETHER TO
ACCOMMODATE LARGER GROUPS. WE CHOSE A MODEL FROM GO-IN.FR WITH A
VARNISHED WOODEN TABLE TOP AND A SOLID SQUARE BASE.
THE CHAIRS ARE ALSO WOOD, HOWEVER A SLIGHTLY DARKER TONE OF BROWN (DARK
MAHOGANY) THAN THE FLOOR AND THE TABLES. THE CHAIR IS THE “ELGIN SIDE
CHAIR” AND IS STACKABLE, PERMITTING EASY AND SPACE-EFFICIENT STORAGE. THE
SQUARE TAPERED LEGS AND THE SOLID BEECH FRAME GIVE THIS CHAIR A SIMPLE,
MODERN DESIGN, FITTING IN WITH THE RESTAURANT DESIGN.
THROUGHOUT THE RESTAURANT, BENCHES WILL ALSO PROVIDE SEATING AROUND THE
INDOOR GARDEN AS WELL AS ALONG THE WALL WITH THE BESPOKE WALL COVERING.
THE BENCHES WILL HELP CREATE A CONVIVIAL AND CASUAL ATMOSPHERE AS WELL AS
PROVIDE THE RESTAURANT WITH “POPS OF COLOUR”, SINCE THE BENCHES WILL BE IN

FLOOR AND THE NATURAL COLOUR PALETTE ALSO CONTRIBUTE TO THE FEELING OF OUTDOORS INDOORS. THE WALL PAINTING AND THE

AS THEY RECALL THE GREEN OF THE RESTAURANT AND ARE EASY TO CLEAN AND

COLLECTION.
THE CHAIRS ARE SIMPLE GREEN METAL CHAIRS LIKE THE ONES THAT WE CAN SEE ON
THE PICTURE ABOVE. THESE WERE CHOSEN BECAUSE THEY MATCH THE COLOR OF
THE CONCEPT ARE MAKE THE TERRACE FEEL WELCOMING AND SUMMERY.
THE FOUNTAIN CENTRED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE TERRACE IS NOT ONLY COHERENT
WITH THE CONCEPT OF HAVING A FOCAL POINT BUT ALSO BY REFLECTING THE
NATURE ASPECT OF THE CONCEPT. FURTHERMORE, THE FOUNTAIN ADDS TO THE
RELAXING ATMOSPHERE OF THE TERRACE AS THE WATER WILL CREATE A NICE
SOUND AND HELP CUT OUT THE SURROUNDING NOISES OF THE ROAD AND NEARBY
